A Message to Our FriendsWelcome to our 2011 Summer Recreation ProgramBrochure! It’s hard to believe the school year is drawing toa close, and soon the kids will be enjoying another summerof fun and excitement. We invite you to take a few mo-ments to review our brochure and “Have a Scoop of Sum-mer Fun” by registering for one or more of the funrecreational opportunities available for all ages.

Our staff has planned a wide variety of programs, and special events for your family to choose from. Through par-ticipation in parks and recreation activities your kids haveunlimited opportunities to make new friends, learn newskills, boost self esteem, develop a healthier lifestyle, andjust plain have some fun!

We encourage you to check out our expanded summerplayground lineup including Playground Junior and Awesome August, register for Glee Extravaganza and Summer Drama, or try the new High Intensity Pilates Fu-sionworkout at Lion’s Park. Check out the fun with SafetyTown, Swimming Lessons, Golf, Tennis, Zumba and more!

24 HOUR DROP BOX Simply drop off your registration in our convenient DropBox located on the Northeast side of City Hall. (Go throughthe employee parking lot).

In-Person Registration Begins Tuesday, May 10 at the Parks & Recreation Department. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8am – 4:30 pm. All in-person registrations are on a firstcome-first serve basis. Non-residents may register forprograms beginning Thursday, May 12, unless otherwisenoted on a specific program in this brochure. (Please usethe main entrance at City Hall).

Internet Registration Begins Monday, May 2 at 9:00 am. The Internet Registra-tion will not allow any user to register before Monday,May 2 at 9:00 a.m. Please note there is a Non-Refund-able “Convenience Fee” charged by the InternetProvider for each registration.

* Please be sure to have your log-in I.D. and Pin # beforehand

Most programs in this brochure are available via Internet Registration.Please see page 5 for further details.

Internet registration begins Monday, May 2 at 9:00 AM If YOU choose not to utilize Internet registration, Resident registrations should be sent NOW (to increase your chance of getting into classes). Mail, Drop Box, and Fax Registrations received prior to May 3 will RANDOMLY be processed the morning of Tuesday, May 3, beginning at9:00 AM. Registrations received after 9:00 AM will be processed later. We use a random registration process because residents receive their brochures from the post office over a period of 1 - 5 days. Thus, some residents receive their brochure 5 days after other residents have received their brochure. A randomprocess is fairer to ALL residents.

Please - NO CASH Payments!Class Confirmations will be mailed to all registrants, except for internet registrations.

Registration Procedures:For Fridays at the end of a Swim or Tennis Session:(You must wait until your LAST CLASS has been completed beforeregistering for another session.) Telephone and In Person registra-tions will only be accepted between the times listed below foryouth swim instruction and between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM foryouth tennis instruction on the following Fridays:

Telephone Registration:Youth Swim and Youth Tennis Lessons ONLY. Tele-phone registrations are designed ONLY for those people who are justcompleting a current Swim or Tennis session.

Attention Registrants: · Participants from the same household may complete one registration form.

• Registration deadlines are normally 2 business days prior to thestart of a program, however in some cases where enrollment is verylow, a class MAY be canceled prior to the deadline date.

• We encourage you to register early!

· Participants from different families wishing to register for thesame class should send in their individual registration forms andpayment in one envelope. There is no guarantee that both familieswill be enrolled in their requested classes.

WEB REGISTRATION HELPFUL HINTSIf you don’t already know your LOGIN ID and ACCOUNTPIN, you need to contact the Parks & Recreation Depart-ment at (262) 797-2443 to get your information. PLEASEBE AWARE THAT THE COMPANY THAT PROVIDES THE INTERNET REGISTRATION FOR US COLLECTS A NON-REFUNDABLE CONVENIENCE FEE ON EACH REGISTRATION.

The City of New Berlin online services are provided for theconvenience of our Parks & Recreation Department cus-tomers. Customers that make use of our online services arecharged a modest transaction fee, which is used directly tocover the cost to the City of providing the service. This serviceis offered through a contracted vendor. The internal offeringof this service is not possible due to limitations in staff, techni-cal resources and budget constraints. The convenience fee isonly charged to those people who feel it worthwhile and utilize the system, while not impacting all taxpayers of NewBerlin.

STEP 1: the Start page• “Programs” lets you quickly and easily browse all of ourprograms.• “My Basket” lets you login and register immediately.• “My Account” allows you to login and view your history. • “Help” gets you in touch with frequently asked questionsand answers.

STEP 2: the Programs pageUse this page to find a course by course number, name, ageor activity.

STEP 3: Search ResultsNow you can make some choices on days, times, etc.

• Class Numbers are displayed under the “Class” heading.• Details on a specific course can be viewed by clicking theCLASS NUMBER or the DETAILS button.• ADD is found to the right of each course that is availablefor internet registration. ADD allows you to login andregister for that course.

NOTE: If a course does not have an “ADD” button, it maybe that class is full, has started already, or is not yet openfor internet registration.

STEP 5: My BasketFinal registrations are made here. Who is taking whatcourse?

• Select a Client even if you are the only member of yourfamily, you must select the correct name from the “selecta client” pulldown.• Go to checkout once your information is correct.

Note: Your registrations are only confirmed upon receiptof payment. To ensure that you get the course(s) that youwant, complete your registrations with the “Go to Check-out” button.

STEP 6: the Checkout• Activity Basket shows your pending registrations.• Basket Charges is the total amount to be charged to yourcredit card.• Payment from Credit Card - enter your: Credit Card Type (Master Card or Visa) information• Apply Payment to complete the transaction and ensureyour registration.

Note: Your credit card information is always secure. Pleaseremember to keep a copy of your “Checkout Success” pageas a receipt.

STEP 7: Checkout Success!• After clicking the “Apply Payment” button, you should re-ceive a confirmation that your registration(s) were successful. Print a copy of that page as it has your registration number for future reference. You will notreceive a receipt through the mail for online registrations.

Playgrounds

Community PlaygroundA Great Summer Experience!Ages 6-12 Must have completed 1st Grade

Site: Hickory Grove Center 2600 S. Sunny Slope Rd.

There are three, three-week playground sessions. During each session, your child will be able to attend each day,

Monday through Friday.The program offers 3 different options:

Early Bird 7:30 - 9:00 AM Community Playground 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Extended Day 4:00 - 5:30 PMNew This Year! See page 9 for Awesome August

EARLY BIRD 7:30 - 9:00 AMFor an additional fee, participants can be dropped off at HickoryGrove Center between 7:30 am - 9:00 am. Although regular play-ground activities will not begin until 9:00 am, “Early Birds” will besupervised by the playground staff. In order to register for “EarlyBird”, participants must be registered for the same session ofCommunity Playground. Enrollment is optional, however is limited.

COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND 9:00 AM - 4:00 PMThis is the same program which has been offered to the commu-nity for many years. Our experienced staff will provide your childwith many fun activities such as art projects, non-competitivegames, an indoor gymnasium for all kinds of fun games, a gameroom, computers and outdoor playground equipment. Swim-ming field trips will be offered on Tuesday afternoons. Duringcommunity playground times there are many additional programopportunities for your child. Check out Mad Science, Promising Picassos, Piano and more in this brochure. You may sign up forone, two, or all three sessions. Also, see page 9 for AwesomeAugust.

EXTENDED DAY 4:00 - 5:30 PMFor an additional fee, participants can be picked up at HickoryGrove Center between 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm. Although regular play-ground activities end at 4:00 pm, “Extended Day” will be super-vised by the playground staff. In order to register for “ExtendedDay”, participants must be registered for the same session of Com-munity Playground. Enrollment is optional, however is limited.

FIELD TRIPS:The cost of field trips are included in the program so you must beregistered for the current session in order to attend the field trips.There will be no playground activities taking place at HickoryGrove Center the days field trips are being conducted. All staff willbe attending the field trips to provide adequate supervision ofparticipants. If you would prefer your child to not attend a partic-ular field trip, they will need to stay home on the day of the trip.Please notify the Playground staff at least 1 week prior to the fieldtrip if your child will not be attending. There is no pro-rating offees for field trips not attended.

As field trip dates get closer, you will receive printed flyers withfurther details on each specific field trip, such as what to wear,what to bring, etc. While it is unlikely; field trip dates are

subject to change. Transportation to and from the field trip site isincluded in the program fee. All field trip admission fees are in-cluded in the program fee.

LEADERSHIP/STAFFINGOur energetic leaders are skilled in game leadership, arts & crafts,sports, and other age appropriate activities. Our experienced staffis composed of school teachers, college students in education orcollege students with varied backgrounds. Community play-ground staff is supervised by a Community Playground Specialist,and our Playground Coordinator.

AGE/PROGRAMParticipants MUST meet the age and grade requirement on/or before the first day of the session they wish to enroll in. The Department reserves the right to drop any child from the programif they do not meet the age or grade requirement.

SELF CAREParticipants must be able to provide self-care in a group setting(able to follow the group, able to use the restroom facilities unas-sisted, able to wash hands without assistance and able to controltheir behavior while participating in all activities). The programstaff does NOT provide one on one care.

MEDICATIONSPlayground staff members are not allowed to provide medicationsfor any participant. If your child needs assistance during the day,you will need to make arrangements to provide assistance.

ATTENDANCEParticipants are welcome to attend the program on the days mostconvenient for them during the session(s) they are enrolled in.Each child must be checked-in upon arrival and checked-out ondeparture with the designated staff member. For safety reasons,participants will not be allowed to leave the Hickory Grove site ontheir own without written consent from their parent or legalguardian.

ARRIVAL/PICKUPParticipants who are not registered for “Early Bird” and aredropped off early before the Community Playground designatedarrival time risk the possibility of being removed from the program. This is a safety issue. There are No Refunds to those participants dropped from the program for ignoring the desig-nated arrival times.

Participants who are registered for “Extended Day” and are pickedup late (after Extended Day designated pickup times) will becharged a $10 per each 15 minutes their child remains at HickoryGrove. Late pickups detain our staff from other programs. If participants are picked up late more than twice, they could bedropped from the program. This is a safety issue.There are No Refunds to those participants dropped from the pro-gram for ignoring the designated pickup times.

THIS IS NOT A LICENSED DAY CARE PROGRAM. The purposeis to provide a variety of activities on a daily basis.

American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” Program

Class StructureAmerican Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors teachswimming skills along with Lifeguards in the water as SwimAides. Courses are divided into six levels. Swimmers muststart at Level 1 and pass each level Beginners (B) and Ad-vanced (A) before registering for the next level. Partici-pants will be given a progress report at the conclusion ofeach session listing the skills they have completed. Childrenoften need to repeat certain levels before advancing on tothe next level. Don’t get discouraged.

Prerequisites:We have added prerequisites to our computer registrationprogram to assure that everyone is in the correct swim-ming level. This will help insure that the swim classes movesmoothly for everyone.

New to our Program?If you are new to our program and are starting in one of thelevel programs above 1B, you will need to register in-per-son, by mail or fax as the on-line registration software willnot recognize that you have successfully completed theprerequisites for the program.

Parent Observation and ExpectationTo create the best possible learning environment, specta-tors will only be allowed in the pool area for a few min-utes on the first day of class and for the entire class onthe last day of lessons. On the first day, parents will beexcused after roll call and the introductory speech. De-pending on the parent’s comfort level, it is not necessary tocome in the pool area on the first day of class.

Throughout the session, parents/guardians are encouragedto speak with their child’s instructor before or after classto check on the progress of their child.

Pool TemperatureRequests have been made by swim participants for varyingswim water temperatures. Due to limited capabilities ofpool equipment controlling these temperatures, the highschool maintenance department is making every effort tomaintain a temperature of 81°.

Ist Day of ClassAll students should report to the locker room where theyshould dress, shower and wait for the Locker Room Atten-dant to explain procedures.

Pool Requirements:1. Participants should familiarize themselves with the poolrules as posted before entering the water.

2. Showers are required before entering the pool.

3. Remove band-aids and gum before entering the pool.

4. Lockers are provided, participants must provide theirown lock.

5. Parks & Recreation Department is not responsible for anylost or stolen items.

6. No food, drink, hairpins, paper or glass containers arepermitted in the pool area.

7. Children over 5 years of age must change in gender ap-propriate locker room.

8. Participants under 4 feet tall or 7 years of age or youngermust be accompanied by a paying adult during openswim.

9. Only authorized swim personnel and paid patrons inswim attire are allowed in the pool area.

New Berlin Synquettes Synchronized Swim Club offers oneof the State’s best competitive swim program. We currentlyhold the top 16-17 duet and 11-12 swimmers in the State.We offer 3 training levels for girls starting at the beginnerlevel with only 2 hours a week commitment through a Senior level that competes at National levels all over thecountry. Any swimmer who is able to complete one lengthof the pool and is comfortable in the deep water is encouraged to try out.

Disc Golf Course atValley View Park

Disc Golf is a rapidly growing sport for all ages, and it’savailable for you here in New Berlin! Players utilize flyingdiscs (frisbees) to shoot into a chain basket (hole). Disc Golfat Valley View Park offers a wonderful opportunity to getgood exercise at your own pace, and enjoy a new sport!The course is located at Valley View Park (5051 S. SunnySlope Rd.) at the west side entrance off of Small Road. Enteroff Beloit Rd. and Small Rd.

Discs For SaleOnce you’ve tried this sport, you may want to improve yourgame. The best way to improve is to use discs that are designed for Disc Golf. They fly farther and straighter thanregular flying saucers/frisbees. Discs are available for purchase at the Parks & Recreation Department.Three types of discs are available: Drivers; Mid-range;and Putters. PRICE: $7.75 each or all 3 (set) for $22.25 (tax included)

Beginner/casual archery is a five-week course where instruc-tion will be given to beginners or those wanting to improvetheir archery skills. Flipping Threes is designed as a transition from Tykes, Tunes, and Tum-bling - Twos, into the Flipping Fours andFives classes. Warrens is a perfect fall destination as it is home to thelargest concentration of cranberry marshes in the State ofWisconsin. Warrens harvests an average of 285 millionpounds of the ruby-red berries. Each year this small com-munity of 300 people hosts the largest cranberry festival inthe world, an event that has been ranked among the top100 events by the American Bus Association.

Shop at the 850 Art and Craft booths, 350 Antique and FleaMarket booths. 100 Farmer’s Market booths, and purchasefresh cranberries and cranberry products. Enjoy food fromover 80 booths. Tour the Cranfest marsh and Ocean Sprayreceiving station ($6.00 option – sign up and pay when you

Pete Pederson began his voice career as a Dee Jay at KVSCRadio in 1991. From there he has gone on to do a series of TVcommercials and voice over spots through the 90’s in Fargo,North Dakota. Pete has been actively working as Voice Overartist for 4 years and his voice can be heard on the radio in theSt. Cloud and Minneapolis area as well as all over the UnitedStates and Canada on ads from a pod casting company.

A resident is anyone who lives within theboundaries of the City. Any person residingoutside these limits will be considered a non-resident and assessed a fee accordingly.Proof of residency will be required for chil-dren 21 and older living in the household.

For the Summer Session non-resident feesfor instructional programs will be 50% morethan the published program rate, but not toexceed an additional $20. Unless indicated otherwise, nonresidents may regis-ter beginning Thursday, May 12. Please seepage 4 for additional information. Non-residents who register using false infor-mation will forfeit their right to participate inthe activity, and no refund will be given.

Registrations for instructional programs willnot be accepted after the third class has beencompleted.

The use of all tobacco products or drinkingof alcoholic beverages on premises ownedby the New Berlin School District is prohib-ited by State law.

Instructors will NOT accept registrations atthe class site. Fees must be paid at theParks & Recreation Office prior to participa-tion; proof of registration may be required atclass.

Age requirements will be as of the date of thefirst class. The participant may be trans-ferred to the correct level provided there areopenings or the class fee may be refunded.

The Department does not providehospital/medical insurance coverage for peo-ple participating in sponsored activities.

Participant initiated program changes mustbe done prior to the start of the program.Your request may be done in-person or bytelephone.

There is a $25.00 service charge on all re-turned checks.

Refunds of fees in recreation activities shallbe made under the following guidelines:• The Parks & Recreation Department can-

cels the program / change in publishedday/time schedule of program by depart-ment (100% refund). Persons registeredfor a program which is cancelled by the de-partment (i.e. Lack of enrollment) shall re-ceive a full refund of fees or a credit for afuture program, whichever the registrantprefers.

• Participant cancellation: Cancellations mustbe submitted in writing within one businessday of the conclusion of the program to theDepartment indicating the reason for the re-fund. Internet convenience fees will not beincluded in the refund and any programsupply costs (if any) will be deducted fromthe refund. Written refund requests re-ceived one business day prior to the startof the program will not be charged an ad-ministrative fee. There will be a $10.00 ad-ministrative fee per program for refundrequests thereafter. There is NO pro-rat-ing of class fees.

*All refunds follow the City Finance De-partment bill paying schedule.

If you desire or are forced (i.e. injury) to discontinue participation in a program,the use of “credit” toward future participationis highly encouraged. The following guide-lines will apply:

If you should do so and we discoverthe error, it may be too late to get your childin the correct class because it is full.
