• Most organizations can improve long-range planning.• Executive leadership is necessary for successful
planning.• Few organizations consistently selecting initiatives and
capital projects well; most do not execute projects well.• Integrating strategic planning with individual projects
can produce better long-range plans; better integration of LRP with budgeting and forecasting produces better results.
• Data availability, accuracy and adequacy are issues that diminish the effectiveness of long-range planning.
• Organizations that use numbers-based analysis reported better financial returns from investments.
• Spreadsheets are the most common tool for planning, analysis and data storage; Organizations rate spreadsheets the least effective technology for long-range planning.
• Formal LRP training produces better results.
