OurunderstandingofyourrequirementsItisourunderstandingthatBeijingNormalUniversityalreadycommissionstwophilosophysummerschoolseachyearwithpartnersinItalyandtheU.S.FollowingavisittoBNUthisMarch,stafffromtheCentreforGlobalProgrammesatYork,togetherwithseniormembersofthephilosophydepartment,outlinedtheformwhichaBritishPhilosophyandCultureSummerSchoolatYorkmighttake.Thisproposalprovidesfurtherdetailstogetherwithabreakdownofcosts.

ThemedtripstoplacesofculturalandphilosophicalinterestEachthemedweekofinputfromstaffofthephilosophydepartmentwillbecomplementedwithafull-daytriptoalocationofculturalandphilosophicalinterest.Forexample,duringweekonewhenthefocusinonEmpiricism,wewouldsuggestavisittoBolsoverCastlewithamini-lectureonMargaretCavendish.ThiscouldbecombinedwithavisittothegraveofThomasHobbes.IssuesinCultureandSociety ThiscomponentcomprisesthepresentationanddiscussionofcontemporarysocioculturalissuesbothintheUKandglobally.Theaimistoconcurrentlydeveloptheparticipants’vocabularyrange,provideopportunitiesforlivelydiscussion,andthroughengagementwiththetopics,broadenstudents’culturalhorizonsandglobalview.Sampletopicsforsessionscouldinclude:

ProjectInthiscomponent,thestudentswillreflectupon,synthesiseandapplynewlearninggained.Giventhattheprogrammewouldbeonlythreeweeksinlength,andnotformallyassessed,wewouldrecommendthatthefinalweekculminatesinabriefstudentpresentation.Onepossiblemeansoforganisingthiswouldbetoaskthestudentstosubmitaseriesofreflectionsthroughouttheprogramme,describinghowtheirthoughtsareevolving.Followingfeedbackfromtutors,eachstudentcouldthenselectthemostsignificantaspectsoftheirintellectualjourney,andpresenttheseintheformofaposter.Thesubsequentposterpresentationcouldthembeattendedbymembersoftheteachingstaff,whocouldcirculate,askquestions,andgainasenseofhowtheprogrammehasbeeninfluencingtheintellectuallifeofthestudents.AcademicCommunicationSkillsTheaimofthesesessionsistohelpstudentsfullyparticipateinpost-lecturesmallgroupdiscussions.Studentswillbeabletoproducetheappropriatefunctionallanguageitemstogiveandpolitelychallengeopinions,interrupt,buildonpreviousspeakersideas,summarise,etc.Inordertoachievetheseaims,therewillbeanemphasisearlyonintheprogrammeonfunctionallanguageforseminars,aswellastoolsforcriticallyevaluatingarguments.
TimetableContacttimeisusually21.5hoursperweek(Monday–Friday)withclassesstartingat09.30andfinishingat15:45.Full-day,mid-weektripswouldusuallytakeplacebetween09.00and17.00.OurApproachtoTrainingWeaimtoprovideactiveandexperientiallearningwithparticipantsinvolvedandengagedintellectuallyandaffectively.Teacherswillberesponsivetoparticipantneedsandourprogrammesaredesignedtoflexiblyallowparticipantsopportunitytopursuetheirownpersonalandprofessionalinterests.Weencourageandfacilitateparticipantstousetheuniversity,theirhostfamilies(whererelevant)andthecityofYorkasresourcesinordertostimulatetheiruseofEnglishinpracticalsituations.FinalevaluationAnon-lineend-of-coursewrittenevaluationwillinformusofrevisionsandadjustmentstobemadeforfuturegroups.Apost-programmetutors’meetingwillassesstheeffectivenessofthecoursestructure,materialsandactivities,andgenerateactionpointstoguideprogrammedevelopment.Thesewillbefollowedupinapre-courseplanningmeetingforanyfurthercohort.Aprogrammereportandevaluationwillbesenttoaftertheprogrammealongwithparticipantgradesandreports,asappropriate.EndofProgrammeReportAfull,detailedevaluativereportwillbepreparedwithinareasonabletimeaftertheendoftheprogramme,whichwillsummariseandassessthemaincomponents.Weeklye-mailupdateswillbesuppliedbythedesignatedProgrammeManager.CertificateOnsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogramme,participantswillreceiveaUniversityofYorkcertificateofattendance.CollegeLifeandYorkUniversityStudentUnionAlstudentswillbecomemembersofDerwentCollegeandbeabletoparticipateinStudentUnionsportingandsocialevents.Inordertofurtherfacilitateinteractionwithotherinternationalandhomestudents,CGPwillrunweekly‘ConversationAfternoons’towhichalluniversitystudentsareinvited.ThesewilltakeplaceintheKitchen@Alcuincaféandhaveprovedextremelypopular.Inaddition,duringthesummermonthsthestudentswillbeabletoparticipateinthesocialprogrammeorganisedbyourdedicatedteamofstudentinterns,andopentoallsummer-residentialstudentsoncampus.Onthisprogrammethestudentscanexpecttoenjoyfreeeventssuchasgames,quizzes,karaokeandmovienights,paidandfacilitatedexcursionstothelocalcinemasandrestaurants,aswellasweekendcoachtripstoplacesofinterestaroundthecountry.
PROGRAMMEMANAGEMENTANDADMINISTRATION
AProgrammeManagerwillbeappointedtooverseeallaspectsofprogrammedesign,deliveryandevaluation,andwillbethemainpointofcontact.AProgrammeAdministratorwillhandleallaspectsoftravel,accommodationandparticipantwelfareandwillbetheparticipants’mainpointofcontactwhiletheyareatYork.
Accommodationandcatering.CampusaccommodationinstudentbedroomsinDerwentCollegecanbeprovidedinthesummermonths.Participantswillhaveaccesstokitchensandkitchenequipment.Weekdaylunchescanbeboughtatoneofthemanycafesandrestaurantsoncampus.LunchesarealsoavailableatthecampusMarketSquarewhichhousesasupermarketandothershops.
TravelWerecommendarrivalateitherManchesterorLeeds-Bradfordairporttominimisetraveltimeafteralongflight. IndependenttravelWecanassistparticipantswhowishtotravelduringoraftertheprogramme.Thetimetablewillbearrangedtoallowtwolongweekendsforindependenttrips.Ifrequired,wecanalsoarrangeweekendvisitstoLondon,EdinburghorStratfordorotherplacesofinterest.AgreementWewilldraftanagreementinadvanceoftheproposedstartoftheprogramme.Thiswillsetoutliabilities,responsibilitiesandpaymentterms.Thiswillbenegotiatedandsignedbybothparties.InvoicingAninvoicewillbeissuedtwomonthsbeforethestartoftheprogrammeforpaymentonemonthinadvance.
StaffingKeynotelectureswillbedeliveredbyestablishedandleadingacademicsinthephilosophydepartmentatYork.Followupseminars,andcomponentssuchasacademiccommunicationskillsandinterculturalstudies,willbeledbyqualifiedandexperiencedCGPtutors.AllteachershavespecialistqualificationsinEnglishLanguageTeaching.Seniorstaffinvolvedinthisprogrammewouldincludethefollowing:MattSmelt-Webb(HeadofYorkCourses,CentreforGlobalProgrammes)studiedEconomicsattheUniversityofManchester,holdsapost-graduatecertificateanddiplomainEnglishLanguageTeachingandhasaMastersinManagementfromtheUniversityofDurhamBusinessSchool.Hehas20years’experienceofteachingEnglishforGeneral,SpecificandAcademicPurposesandhehastaughtanddevelopedcoursesinprofessionalcommunicationskillstomanagersanddiplomatsintheUKandoverseas.AftertraininginOman,heworkedinTurkey,TheCzechRepublicandPortugalandbecameaDirectorofStudiesatInternationalHouse,Lodz,PolandandtrainedteachersintheBalticStatesbeforereturningtotheUKtoworkasaBusinessEnglishandCommunicationSkillstrainerforYorkAssociates.HemanagedanddevelopedbespokespecialistprogrammesattheCentreforEnglishLanguageTeachingforfourteenyearsbeforeheandhisteamjoinedwiththeStudyAbroadOfficetoformthenewCentreforGlobalProgrammes.Hispublicationsincludeabusinessgrammarpackandteacher’sbooksforbusinessEnglishcoursebooks.Dr.AndrewKerrigan(AssociateLecturer)hasbeenresearchingandteachingEnglishlanguage,linguisticsandcultureforover17yearsandhasworkedinarangeofuniversitiesandlanguageschoolsintheUKandincontinentalEurope.AsanindependentscholarheholdsadoctorateinEnglishStudiesfromtheUniversityofStrathclyde,Glasgowspecialisingincriticaldiscourseanalysisandcognitivetheoryofmetaphor.Asaneducator,hespecialisesincreatinganddeliveringtailor-madeprofessionaldevelopmentcoursesincreativity,criticalthinkingandinterculturalcompetencyforinternationalstudentsandacademics.HeisalsoresponsiblefortheintegrationofCGPstudentswiththeYorkstudentbody.NickMilner(AssociateLecturer)hasover25yearsofexperienceworkinginELTasateacher,teachertrainerandmanager.HeworkedinSpainfor10yearsteachingbothGeneralandBusinessEnglish,includingworkasaCambridgeExaminer.HethenworkedinCambridgeandYorkasaDirectorofStudiesbeforespending6yearsworkingasHeadoftheInternationalDepartmentataprivatesecondaryschool.AswellasaBAinEnglishandapostgraduatecertificateinteaching,NickholdsadiplomainELTManagementandspecialisesinprofessionaldevelopmentandteachertraining.HelenaKang(AssociateLecturer)hasbeenteachinganddevelopingcurriculuminthefieldofELTandmethodologyforover10years.Asaneducator,shehastaughtEnglishlanguageinarangeofeducationalcontextsandasateachertrainer,shehastrainedinternationalin-serviceteachersofEnglishfromcountriesacrossAsiaandEurope.Helenaspecialisesindevelopinganddeliveringbespokecoursesforinternationalstudents,governmentinstitutionsandeducationprofessionals.
