DESCRIPTIONThe High Pressure / Ultra High Pressure Differential Safety Firing Head was designed to be used in several different well conditions. This Firing Head has a set of ports to allow circulation of well fluids prior to activation. A drop ball is introduced into the work string, which conveyed the firing head down hole. The ball can be allowed to free fall or be pumped down to the differential piston. The piston is pinned to a predetermined differential pressure and, once the ball is seated, then pressure is applied against the piston and seated ball. When the piston is sheared free, it will strike the Hydro-Safety Impact assembly releasing the firing pin. This action will allow the well’s hydrostatic pressure to drive the released firing pin into the detonator. Once the firing head assembly is activated a set of ports are exposed, allowing circulation of well fluids after detonation.

The HP / Ultra HPHT differential piston uses a 3/4” or a 1” ball.

The pressure piston can be differentially pinned up to 6,000 psi @ 72°F

1 The maximum temperature can be increased to 400°F (204°C) by substituting the 90 durometer Nitrile O-Rings with 90 durometer Viton O-Rings or 500°F (260°C) by substituting with 90 durometer Alfas O-Rings. Refer to the Time vs Temperature chart for Explosives to confirm any explosive requirements.2 You must use the Back-Ups on the O-Rings with pressures exceeding 20,000 psi (133 MPa). Tool is one time use when operating pressure is above 20,000 psi due to damage during activation.3 This is the rating of the tool strength (not at the EUE connection). EUE connection strength will depend on the tubing grade.

Warning: Whenrunningthistoolbelowaflappervalveoranydevice that can isolate tuning from annulus, there is a potential to trappressurebetweenthedifferentialpistonandtheflappervalve.This may occur if the ball is landed in place but the piston does notshear.ForthisconfigurationitisrecommendedthattheO-Ringonthedifferentialpistonbeomitted.WhentheO-Ringisomittedadditionalflowmayberequiredtoreachshearpressureandshiftthepiston.

Note: Check all items against the parts list to be sure of having the correct parts and quantities.

Note: Check for any damage to the parts which would prevent the part from being assembled correctly, easily and safely.

Note: This tool is designed to function in one ballistic event. The user must determine if the firing head is suitable for additional runs and assumes all liability for use.

1.0 Assembly1.1 Install the API Seal Ring (item #10) into the Body (item #4) thread groove of the EUE

connection. Apply grease to the internal sealing surface of the Body. The distance to the back of the sealing surface on the Body is 8” and may require an extension to apply the grease. Use appropriate high temperature grease per application. Set the Body aside.

1.2 Install the O-Rings (item #15) on the Firing Pin Body (item #2) and the O-Rings (item #14) onto the Firing Pin (item #1). Apply grease to the O-Rings on the Firing Pin and Insert into the Firing Pin Body until the retaining ball groove in the pin is aligned with the retaining ball holes on the body. If using the O-Ring Back Up install items #19 into the groove of the Firing Pin and items #20 into the groove of the Firing Pin Body prior to installation of the Firing Pin.

Note: The orientation of the O-Ring Back Ups is critical. Make sure the concave radius is in contact with the O-Ring. Make sure the location of the O-Ring Back Ups is placed in line with the direct pressure

1.3 Use the Retainer Cap (item #3) for the next section. Partially thread one of the Brass Shear Screws (item #11) into the top countersunk threaded hole that is 180°from the 1/8” slot. Make sure the Brass Shear Screw tip does not extended into the I.D. of the Retainer Cap.

1.4 Apply a small amount of grease in each retaining ball hole and insert the five Retaining Balls (item #8). The retaining balls will sit in the Firing Pin groove and should recess below the O.D. of the Firing Pin Body. Slide the Retaining Cap over the Firing Pin Body and align the 1/8” slot with the 3/16” hole in the Firing Pin Body (item #2). Once aligned thread the top Brass Shear Screw into the brass screw hole on the Firing Pin Body. The top of the Brass Shear should recess below the O.D. of the Retainer Cap.

Note: You can use a 1/8” rod to help align the 1/8” slot with the 3/16” hole.

1.5 Secure the Retaining Cap by threading the last two Brass Shear Screws (item #11) into the assembly. The Brass Shear Screws should recess below the O.D. of the Retaining Cap and extend into the holes on the Firing Pin Body.

1.6 Install the O-Rings (item #18) onto the Det. Body Housing (item #7). Install the O-Ring (item #17) into the groove face of the Det. Body Housing. Carefully insert the Percussion Detonator (item A) into the recess of the Det. Body Housing. Apply grease to the O-Rings and thread of the Firing Pin assembly and thread into the Det. Body Housing until it contacts with the Detonator. Tighten just enough to secure the detonator. Use the exposed section of the firing pin to tighten, not the Retaining Cap. Avoid scarring the O.D. surface of the Firing Pin Body while tightening.

Warning: You are handling an explosive device and all safety precautions must be observed and adhered to!

1.7 Install the O-Ring (item #16) onto the Piston (item #6). Calculate the number of Shear Pins (item #12) to be used, by referring to the Pinning Calculation Sheets for shear pin values vs. temperature. Align the Piston shear pin groove with the shear pin holes in the Support Sleeve (item #5). Insert the selected number of pins into the shear pin holes. Install the O-Rings (item #13) into the shear pin groove on the Support Sleeve to retain the pins.

Note: It is recommended to install the shear pins with the components in the vertical position. Note: Space the pins symmetrically as possible around the tool to provide a balanced shearing force.

2.4 There is a ± 5% operating tolerance on the shear pins, so now calculate an average, a high, and a low operating pressure.

High side: 1.05 X (average psi) = psi

Low side: 0.95 X (average psi) = psi

Refer to the Shear Pin shipping package for this tool. The psi shear value @ 72°F will be listed on a sticker label attached to the package. Use that listed value for your calculations.

Operating Suggestions - Owen suggests using a minimum of four (4) pins or more with his firing assembly. This allows time for the pressure to stabilize during activation of the firing sequence.
