TICKTON YOUTH KAF & FRIENDS ...

Congratulations goes to the children and young people of Tickton Youth Kaf and friends who have contributed over 1,100 items to the Beverley Foodbank since October 2017. Well done to everyone who has contributed. The last two events, Scottish Night and Italy Night were well supported with. children trying some Haggis and attempting to make a tower (leaning or otherwise) from pasta and marshmallows. The Romeo and Juliet masks (pictured) went down quite well too. However, the two Italian chefs stole the show on Italy Night, looking very realistic with their fake moustaches. This week on the 29th of March the event is “Willy Wonka’s Mad Hatter’s Chocolate night!” The chocolate fountain should go down well, as should the guess the chocolate flavours competition, chocolate air hockey and the chocolate table tennis game. What’s not to like?

CHURCH NEWS... ... Village Coffee Mornings The Methodist Church is open every Thursday morning for coffee (tea, biscuits, toasted tea-bread) from 10 am* until 11.30 and we’d love to see you. There is no charge as we are not looking to make money, just to offer a bit of hospitality so do come along if and when you are able. (*We have altered the start time as 9 am seemed too early.)

Church Wildlife and Quiet Garden We are developing ideas for St Paul’s churchyard to incorporate both a wildlife garden and quiet area with additional seating. We are involving children from Tickton School in the planning and making and hope to realise our plans during the early summer. Currently the idea is to have two separate areas designated, one in the front, facing the road, and the other in the quieter space towards the back of the churchyard. We hope to be able to report progress in the next issues of TD.

Scarecrow Hunt The Scarecrow Hunt is one of our major fund-raising opportunities and it has taken place every other year for what seems now many years. It always produces a fine response from families and groups in the village in terms of providing scarecrows, usually about a hundred, and the two days of the festival see the village full of people having fun strolling round to look at them all. The dates this year are May 18th/19th, which is a week before the school half term begins, so lots of people should be around. Let’s hope for weather which is fine and warm. Meanwhile, get designing and building scarecrows – the details are elsewhere in the Diary.

Church Garden Party This year’s Garden Party takes place on Saturday July 6th, from 2 pm to 4.30 in St Paul’s churchyard. Stalls and activities will be much like what we’ve grown to know and love over many years, and it was generally agreed the new venue, moved two years ago after 30 or so years in a private garden, is very successful, even against competition last year from the football World Cup and Wimbledon! Do put the date in your diary.

Services Please see the Service Plan but note the Good Friday service, which is at Routh this year, and the service on the Scarecrow Sunday, which is in the evening at 6.30 rather than in the morning when our minds will be full of straw!

Clergy news As most people will know, our church is an Ecumenical Partnership between the Church of England and the Methodist Church – in our case between Beverley Minster and Beverley Methodist Circuit. So, our church ministers are from both organisations. Beverley Minster parish now has an Associate Vicar – Revd Wendy Wale – and later in the summer a new trainee curate will arrive, so the Minster team, lead by the Vicar, Jonathan Baker – will be at full strength again.

Relief organist needed for Tickton. We are looking for someone to play for occasional or regular

Sundays. If you or someone you know is a pianist, or even already an organist, and would like to have a go please contact Richard Powell on 542189. We can arrange tuition with Robert Poyser, the Minster organist, at no charge, for anyone interested though the organ at St Paul’s is not very complicated or demanding! Please talk to Richard.

Once again, the Fashion Show, organised by Soroptimist International of Beverley and District, took place on Friday 15th March at Tickton Village Hall. This year’s event was bigger and better than ever with more local shops joining the event. Spring fashions were on display from Seasalt, Molly Browns, Collections of Beverley, Lakeland Leathers, Estelle of Willerby and Ballgown Divas. There were outfits for day and night, casual and formal, weddings, proms and the races - something for everyone. The models in all shapes, sizes and ages showed us how to dress to impress. Members of SI Beverley and District were among those modelling the outfits, and ensuring a welcome for over one hundred ladies and gentlemen. In recent years the Soroptimists have given thousands of pounds to local charities and the main charity this year is Sight Support, Hull and East Riding (formerly HERIB) and a magnificent donation of over £1,122 (with more to come) was raised for this deserving organisation.

VICAR’S BLOG…

‘They are us’ After the dreadful terrorist attack on the mosque in Christchurch NZ on 15th March, the Prime Minister of New Zealand received much praise from around the world for her statesmanlike reaction. Not only did Jacinda Ardern identify strongly with the victims, visiting the mosque, providing financial support for the families affected, and quickly branding this a terrorist attack rather than the work of an isolated extremist, but she also worked hard to discourage different groups from blaming each other. Instead of highlighting differences and distinguishing ‘them’ from ‘us’, she has stressed the unity of New Zealand’s diverse society and her slogan ‘They are us’ has been taken up widely.

In a world where politicians are tempted to appeal to the worst elements in human nature, this is refreshingly different. Tightening up on immigration, talking as though we are threatened by the rest of the world and building walls along borders is an easy way to prop up political support. But it does so by heightening fear, increasing division and blaming victims for the violence visited upon them. It was against such a background of fear and division that fascist groups came to power in Europe in the 1920s and 30s.

According to the Bible, the first responsibility of kings is not the defence of the realm; it is to deliver justice, especially to the poor and most vulnerable, including foreigners. This is a primary vision which modern leaders have almost entirely forgotten; but God surely hasn’t.

The Christian gospel is all about reconciliation and restoring wholeness in the world. Jesus summarised it as loving God with all your heart and loving your neighbour as yourself. And since we ourselves are freely forgiven by God, we have no business rubbishing others, especially when they are suffering or are a minority.

This means that any political argument which seems to promote an attitude of ‘us and them’, or which seeks to prefer one group at the expense of another, or that narrows its appeal to one class, colour, nation or race without valuing other inhabitants of this small planet, is questionable from a Christian point of view.

Holy Week and Easter remind us that reconciliation and mercy are God’s top priority even though they are cross-shaped and do not come cheaply. But on the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, not for a few, but for all the world. If we want to live in the light of that amazing good news, our vision should be no less. God is for us so that ‘they’ too can be ‘us’.

Hello Ladies...Do you collect things – beer mats, cream jugs, thimbles, cocktail glasses, exotic souvenirs from faraway places, teddies or anything of that sort? If so, how about collecting a few new friends and possibly a few new skills at your local WI? I know it’s a bit cheesy to say that, but it’d be really great to welcome you to one of our meetings and, you never know, you might find it’s just the thing to add to your collection of life experiences.

We’ve collected together some very good speakers for our meetings this year, and we’re well into our 2019 programme now. So much so that at our April meeting (on the 15th) we’re at our annual review time, when we look back over the past twelve months, select our new committee and vote for a new President. We can hardly believe that Mary has been our President for the last three years and now has to step down. She’s been a wonderful, generous and very capable leader and we hope she’ll return to the role at some time in the future. Many thanks, Mary. Our last meeting in March gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of the new East Riding Theatre, with Richard Avery and Tom Wilder telling us the history of the project and how the theatre is run and managed now. The next few months are looking good too, with plans in place for interesting speakers in May (20th - a local artist) and June (17th - Hull Animal Welfare), a social evening and quiz in July (15th) and, of course, our annual outing in August (19th). Please come along as a visitor to any of our meetings to see for yourself what the WI has to offer. All ages are welcome, from 18 to 118 and there really is something for everyone. As you probably know, we meet on the third Monday of each month, except for our August outing, and meetings are held in the Methodist Chapel on Main Street from 7.30pm until about 9.30pm. Update on improvements to the Small Hall area providing a fully accessible WC, new cleaner’s store, additional secure storage, all with new floors and fireproof doors.

The £35,000 make-over took place during the 2018-19 Winter & Christmas period and is part of an ongoing programme of improvements to this 70-year-old building. The Trustees have been busy seeking funding and achieved a successful grant from the LEADER Programme of £23,532 towards the project; the grants are administered on behalf of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

The remainder of the money for this project came from the village hall's development fund - which is money raised from the annual community Pantomimes and Little Theatre productions – so . . . another huge “thank you” to all who support these events. The new improved facility has been welcomed by existing User Groups and, pleasingly, Tickton Village Hall has more availability for smaller activities and events.

Following a runaway success on their opening night last week, the Crown & Anchor in Tickton seems to be

back with a vengeance. Dating back to 1823, the building is set in idyllic surroundings on the riverbank just

outside of Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Mike Higgins, his manager Red and the team of staff seem to have taken the village by storm, creating a real buzz amongst excited locals – everybody seems to be talking about the place!

Mike tells us that the new kitchen will be fitted by early April and the menu will be announced soon. Produce is being locally sourced and food will be available from 8am every day – homemade and affordable – for customers to eat in or outside on the riverbank or in the beautiful, secluded garden. Announcements will be made on Facebook and the website.

Red said the team have been overwhelmed by the support and welcome from the community and she’s looking forward to being a part of the success story as the venue retakes its rightful place in the village as a good, old fashioned country pub.

There are live artists planned for most Saturday evenings and

some more mellow acoustic sessions on occasional Sunday afternoons to complement you roast dinner. All of this coupled with open fires, cask ales, sensibly priced food and drink and a very warm welcome... which includes your dogs and horses, under 18s ‘til 8.30pm with an adult, walkers, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Booking is recommended. So why not pay a visit? You’ll be glad you did!

NEW INN GOLF SOCIETY…

The year will commence with a visit to KP Club on 10th May which the Beast from the East kyboshed last year. We will then move over the river to Grimsby for our next regular fixture at Grimsby on June 7th. You will find us at Bridlington Links on the 19th of July followed by our Captains weekend which has still to be confirmed on the 16th and 17th of August. Getting towards the end of our year and we will be back over the water at Holme Hall Golf Club on 13th September ending at Pike Hills on October 11th. Our “End of Term” lunch took place on December 7th at Hainsworth Park Golf Club and we used public transport to and from the venue to show what environmentally friendly people golfers are. We held or AGM on 21st February followed by an enjoyable meal at the Rose & Crown in Beverley. Sadly Captain Chris Reeves, who was our inaugural captain stood down and we haven’t elected a successor as yet and Chris will be a hard act to follow. Last year was most enjoyable, we played some very attractive and sometimes demanding courses which we will be hoping to repeat in 2019 with some challenging venues but most of all good fellowship and competitive spirit irrespective of ability.

Hello from Tickton bowls club

Nearly finished the winter league and cannot believe how fast it goes.

We have the pairs league on going at the moment which will finish in April. It has taken a bit longer than normal because we have had to fit in some Humberside league matches on the club nights. The knockout ladies and gent’s singles competition have had a few shocks in the ladies, Judy knocked beryl out,

Joan knocked Jackie out and Pauline knocked Celia out.

In the men's teams also some surprises John Styan beat John Fussey. All the results of the competitions will be in the next addition of the Tickton Diary.

Monday evening, we always have a raffle, this season we changed it to the golden ball. We have 11 white balls and one golden one. The Tickton holder will have the opportunity to dip in the bag and try and find the golden one, you only get one chance. If you pull out a white one there is no winner and it rolls overs until someone is lucky enough to pull out the golden ball. Tickets are 50 pence [ all for a but if fun]

We are all looking forward to our end of season night out which will be at the Trout at Wansford, if you haven't been you don't know what you are missing... its lovely. Also, very popular.

The Humberside teams have finished the Tornados have had a disappointing season but the Titans have played exceptionally well and will be moving up, well done.

Spring is just around the corner – come and play

boules! It’s time to be out and about. Come and give us a try – for free. The club is friendly and very informal. We play all year round at the Catwick Lane playing field. You’ll get a warm welcome (including tea and biscuits) and any help you need to get started. You can play for fun or be competitive as we’re part of the Northern Petanque network of clubs. No special kit required, we can provide boules, explain the rules and coaching sessions are available for those who want them. TICKTON SCHOOL’S FOREST SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.... Year 1 have been having new adventures in our Forest School sessions.

Here’s what they say about it;

“Being outside is great because we get to have fun in the woods, searching for lots of interesting things and have a camp fire with hot chocolate and pancakes”

They are learning lots too about science, nature and how to work as part of a group.

“We have to work together as a team to get it just right, and we can dance in the squishy mud and get really dirty too!”

TICKTON SCHOOL NETBALL AT THE PARK....

Tickton School have rearranged the venue of where we now practice netball. We now play at the park for a better chance of winning our matches as the courts at the park are the standard size. We are doing our training on a Monday night at 3.30 until 5.00. We do our warm up differently every week and do different stretches. We normally play games but sometimes do activities mainly to work on defence or attack. So far, we have played a tournament and 3 matches. In the tournament we came third. Our coaches are Mrs Smith and Mrs Swift.

Late last week, Year 3, 4 and 5 began to prepare a delicious Victorian meal. We started on the Thursday by peeling and chopping vegetables for our stew. We had to prepare them on the Thursday so that it could be cooked early on the Friday morning. On Friday morning, we still had lots to do so we started by splitting into groups to make either bread rolls or Victoria sponge cakes. We learnt lots of new skills such as folding in flour, using claw and bridge hands when cutting, creaming sugar and butter, kneading and even cracking eggs. By lunch time, we had all had chance to make all three of the different foods that we were going to be tasting. We couldn’t wait until the afternoon!

We were all so excited going into the hall. We had three big tables full of all of our food. It smelt like a dream! Scrumptious! The first thing to pass our lips was the bread and stew. Lots of us dipped the bread into the stew to soak up the juice! Most of us enjoyed it and more than half of us had seconds! We realised that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover because even though the stew didn’t look too appetising, it was extremely tasty. Once we had finished our main course, it was time to try the Victoria sponge cakes. They looked so tasty and grand and they tasted even better than they looked! We had an amazing day and we noticed that we still eat a lot of foods that the Victorians ate!

We are the JTAs – Junior Travel Ambassadors – from Tickton C.E Primary School and our job is to encourage you to become healthier and more active. We have been looking into how to keep you safe on the road, and how to reduce traffic pollution. We have many new initiatives to ensure this happens: a ‘High Vis library’ and ‘Bee bright, bee safe, bee seen’. We have also had a meeting with the road safety ambassadors, trying to encourage people to go to school in a more healthy and active way. If you haven’t noticed, Tickton Primary is in the process of having a bike and scooter shed built so that the pupils can come on their bikes, scooters or in any other active ways. We are also planning many events: the big pedal, a meeting with parents, banner competition and we are going to try and persuade the government for a zebra crossing near the school!
