The de Young Art Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has been a popular destination for over 100 years. Originally built for the California Midwinter International Expo-sition in 1894, the popular exhibit was established as the Fine Arts Building by the chair of the exposition committee Michael H. de Young, co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle. After damage from earthquakes in 1906 and 1989, the original building was replaced by a new building built on springs, making it nearly earthquake proof. The de Young mu-seum is the most visited art museum west of the Mississippi. The following art work is currently on display in the de Young Art Museum.

Flower Girl by Nicolai Fechin 1936

Nicolai Fechin was born in 1881 in Kazan, Russia. Fechin was a child prodigy who enrolled in the prestigous St Pe-tersburg Academy of Arts at the age of 13. Fechin’s family emigrated to the United States during the Russian Revolu-tion where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and encour-aged to move to a drier climate. Fechin moved to Taos New Mexico where he fell in love with the beautiful mountains and the colorful Native American cul-ture. Fechin’s house in Taos is now home to the Taos Art Museum.

Discussion: After living in Siberia Rus-sion for many years, what about Taos might have inspired him?

John Charles Haley was born in Minnesota where he at-tended the Minneapolis School of art. He was hired as an art instructor at the University of California at Berkeley where he taught for 42 years. Haley is credited with es-tablishing Berkeley as one of the finest art schools in the country.

Discussion: Haley is considered a Modernist artist. This art form often combined art and politics and focused on social change. Using Haley’s color choices and facial expressions, what might Haley have been high-lighting in this painting?

IN 1859 Bierstadt emigrated to the United States where he was hired by an Overland survey expidition to document the west-ern frontier. Bierstadt’s paintings were wildly popular with a public eager to learn more about the mysterious land to the West.
