The functional idea was to have, provide dormitories with other functions for guest teachers and/or pupils. This facility would provide ablutions,

sleeping spaces (dormitories), a kitchen, veranda and an outdoor classroom. This facility would also need to be used as a play space for the pupils

which in-turn would provide security of not having pupils going astray in search of other places to play as the facility would cater to their needs.

Public Spaces

The public spaces are the viewing platform, veranda and outdoor classroom which allow complete access to the pupils and staff.

Semi-Private Spaces

The viewing platform and outdoor classroom are also included as semi-private spaces because of their use at different times. The classroom may

not be a public space when there is an ongoing lesson and the viewing platform may not be accessible after hours or on days when there are no

classes due to the facility being used as a dormitory facility at such times. The ablutions are semi-private as they are used by both pupils and staff

but may not be completely accessible to the general public. Kitchen/cooking facilities are semi-private for use by occupants of the facility.

Private

Private spaces are only accessible to the occupants which are either staff or pupils.

Approach to the Facility

Approach to the facility is split up into two possible ways. I t is either

approached from public to semi-private to private spaces. In this case,

that is why spaces such as ablutions have been placed in such

locations so that non-residents do not pass through private spaces,

these being separated by a corridor.

Another approach is either through the rear which directly takes

residents to the private spaces. A possible reason for this would be

because the facility would be located in a central site therefore other

functions would surround the facility (eg football fields in the back).

Circulation within the Facility

These show how circulation is from dormitories to kitchen,

ablutions or veranda. It also shows how the facility is used should

there be unfavorable weather conditions.

Technology

The use of tyres with concrete to suspend the facility off the ground was to eliminate use of conventional strip foundations and floor slabs. The use of

timber allowed for the easily assembled multifunctional facility which could cater for different uses such as the tyres and climbing wall for the pupils which

also serves as a security measure helping prevention of children straying away from the facility.

The use of column and beams introduced a rythmn from public to semi-private to private spaces. The

difference in size also supported this.

The functional idea with the daycare centre was to provide a facility that fit into its context as well as providing a secure environment for its

occupants. There was also a need to provide a large working area, storage, ablutions as well as an office.

Technology

The technology complimented its surrounding context. The organization of the layout matched the unparalleled organization of the context. The

use of light material helped to scale the building in relation to its site.

The functional idea of the Emmanuel Creche was providing a facility for children which integrated the building and the playground. A creche

stimulating the children’s experience through varying heights, views and angles. The integration was to respond to the needs of the children using

the building by keeping them occupied and entertained so as to avoid them straying elsewhere thereby contributing as a security measure.

Public Spaces

The veranda allows access to all including visiting parents and other visitors.

Semi-Private Spaces

Due to certain time, certain areas of the veranda may not be accessible to the general public and will only be accessible to staff and pupils.

Ablutions are located in an area which is placed away from private spaces but can be monitored for security reasons.

Private

Private spaces are only accessible to the occupants which are either staff or pupils.

Technology

The technology of the structure responded in a way to address the need for the children by providing leisure activities for specific age

groups. By using these light materials, it was possible to integrate a playground into the building. This being in the form of a jungle

gym and the external ramp and slide. The material also allowed the flexibility for varying heights, angles and views which stimulate the

children’s spatial experience.

The functional idea of the creche was to provide a facility in between two playgrounds. The facility was linearly arranged to allow control and

supervision of children. This arrangement also acts as a filter between the 2 playgrounds. Another idea was to provide cross ventilation and

favourable internal conditions as well as providing shade for the outside play areas.

Technology

The material helps to ensure a comfortable climate internally by the use of corrugated metal for the walls which gives it the flexibility to pivot to

allow cross-ventilation. The use of shade cloth and canvas also helps with the internal climate. The shade cloth is also used for the outside play

area providing shade for the space.

There was an idea for a secure organization enabling the supervision of the children. The idea was to have an easily assembled creche providing

classrooms for the different age groups as well as having the flexibility to merge classrooms to possibly occupy more children. There was the need to

provide favorable internal and exterior conditions such as protection from the sun and wind. There was also an idea for the building itself being

multifunctional.

Organization

The veranda is the main link between classrooms, WC and kitchen spaces to the play

areas. The WC and kitchen are located to one side of the facility to keep them away

from the more private classroom areas and children play spaces.

spaces or to kitchen and/

Technology

The material, being lightweight (timber, corrugated sheets) allowed ease of construction. This also provided a long spanning roof which provides

shade for the spaces beneath as well as deflection of some wind which in turn helps cool the space beneath. Stainless steel cables and fabric also

provide shade for the children playing in these spaces. The structure becomes multifunctional as it is then used for shelving and storage purposes. The

material provides flexibility of doubling in size of classrooms through collapsible partitioning.

Page 8: new 6

The structure was designed to fit into its context although it would provide functions for a different age group. The idea was to use the creche as a

playground in order to enhance the children’s experience. The aim was to provide a facility with a long life span by use of steel.

Approaches to Facility

Approaches to the facility

entail passing through the

semi-private spaces,

ablutions and play areas

before being filtered to

the private spaces. This

helps in keeping the

creche secure.

Circulation within Facility

Movement within facility

entails a ‘filtering’ through

the different spaces.

Movement from classes and

play spaces is directed

through to the office and

ablutions and vice-versa.

Technology

The technology used, in this case steel and plywood, focused on the longevity of the creche. The use of a sheet metal roof helps integrate the creche

with its surrounding context. The steel helps construct a large roof for the facilities below. With the strength of the roof it was possible to add

seating, niches to enhance the children’s experience.
