5th Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) 29th March 2020

This weekend we enter Passiontide, and the veiling of all images in our churches. The reason for this is that our attention should be focused, during these last couple of weeks of Lent, on God Himself. In a sense, we entered a form of Passiontide on Friday 20th March, when we closed the doors of our churches, doors that have remained closed. It was not just the doors of our churches that closed on 20th March, so many spheres of our lives were ‘veiled’ that day. The physical closeness of family and friends, even the ability to go to the pub and socialise, this is because of the guidelines and the legislation brought into force by Her Majesty’s Government. God brings about good from evil situations. God is using the ‘veiling’ of our own lives to call us closer to Him, so that we seek Him with our whole being, through the day, throughout the week. Let us turn to turn Him, and cry out to Him in our need.

Sunday Mass Antiphons Introit: Give me justice, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is faithless. From the deceitful and cunning rescue me, for you, O God, are my strength. Responsorial Psalm: With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Gospel Acclamation: Glory and praise to you, O Christ! I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die. Glory and praise to you, O Christ! Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)

In these times of lockdown, we are acutely aware of our need for the Sacraments. For some, there may be a yearning to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but we find ourselves constrained in our movements. As priests, we are always ready and willing to hear the Confessions of those in need but we must also operate within the rule of both Church and civil law; which in these times is a very delicate balancing act. Which is why we want to reassure you that there is no need at this time to seek Reconciliation without "grave necessity" i.e. grave sin that could potentially be mortal sin. What is mortal sin? The examination of conscience on the following page can help discern this. If you find yourself in “grave necessity” of Reconciliation, please telephone one of the priests to make suitable arrangements for the Sacrament. “Lord Jesus, you chose to be called the friend of sinners. By your saving death and resurrection free me from my sins. May your peace take root in my heart and bring

forth a harvest of love, holiness, and truth.”

To all our parishioners who are working on the frontline in the fight against Coronavirus. THANK YOU for your compassion, generosity and talents! We want to hear from you, chat with you, pray with you in this difficult time. Please know that we are here for you anytime on the phone, with a video conference or through your own prayer requests. On your way to work, or on your way home arrange to meet us outside the church and we will bring the Lord to you for a blessing. As your spiritual family we are here to support, nourish and strengthen you as well! As a Pastoral Team, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are presently not allowing chaplains onto hospital wards because of the lack of PPE. But we wanted make you aware there is something YOU can do to help your patients spiritually. This past week the Holy See has issued Plenary Indulgences to those suffering from Coronavirus at home or in hospital, their families and for you the care workers also. To obtain the indulgence under the usual conditions (in this case the will to approach Sacramental Confession, the Eucharist as soon as possible, and prayer for the Pope’s Intentions) the following acts can be made:

• “unite themselves spiritually, where possible through the media, to the celebration of the Holy Mass, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, to the pious practice of the Way of the Cross or other forms of devotion.” – These are all possible through our livestream schedule on the previous page.

• If this is not possible then reciting the Creed (Profession of faith), the Lord’s Prayer and any prayer to Our Lady.

Fr. Michael is currently producing a manual of prayers you can use at work and has agreed with the Health Board, via the Chaplaincy department, that these can be made available to you for printing and disposal as necessary.

The Examination of Conscience Before we examine ourselves let us first consider the nature of sin. What is sin? Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbour caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law.” Sin is an offense against God: "Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight." Sin sets itself against God's love for us and turns our hearts away from it. Like the first sin, it is disobedience, a revolt against God through the will to become "like gods," knowing and determining good and evil. Sin is thus "love of oneself even to contempt of God." In this proud self-exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience of Jesus, which achieves our salvation.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs: 1849-1850) The Gravity of sin Sins are evaluated according to their gravity i.e. they are either Venial or Mortal Sins. The distinction between the two finds it root in Sacred Scripture (the Bible): “If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one—to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say that you should pray about that.

All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal.” (1 John 5:16-17) Mortal Sin destroys charity in the heart by a grave violation of God's law; it turns us away from God, who is our ultimate end and our beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him. Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it. Such is the gravity of Mortal sin that we remove ourselves from Communion with the Body of Christ (the Church) until that sin is remedied - the remedy being Sacramental Confession.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 1854-1856) What constitutes Mortal Sin? A Mortal Sin consists of three parts:

1. the sin committed must be grave matter. Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour your father and your mother." (Mk 10:19)

2. at the time the sin was committed the person must have known that it was sin and the gravity of it.

3. at the time the sin was committed the person was not inhibited in freedom or knowledge in any way.

As such, any Catholic who is at least aware that a sin committed is grave matter and committed the sin knowing this fact, should approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation as soon as possible and refrain from taking Holy Communion. On these principles, let us examine our consciences and discern the need for Reconciliation. The questions on the following page will help us in that purpose.

Page 5: New 5th Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) - All Saints · 2020. 3. 28. · 5th Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) 29th March 2020 This weekend we enter Passiontide, and the veiling of all images in

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Our Lady during the Coronavirus Pandemic

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the people, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Financial Matters

We have had a number of parishioners contact us over this past week who have asked how they can still contribute their offering to the parish considering that we cannot get to Mass for the immediate future. We are most grateful that in these difficult times you still wish to contribute financially to the parish. There are two options available for giving at this time. Either you can set up a Standing Order with your bank, the details of which may be obtained via the parish office or the Standing Order form at https://allsaintsrcnewport.org.uk/about/finance-matters/. Alternatively, you can make a single contribution by visiting our Virgin Moneygiving page https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/allsaintsrcnewport

Of your kindness, if you know of any parishioner who is self-isolating at this time please consider printing this newsletter and popping a copy through their letterbox. However, please do not put yourself at risk if you are vulnerable to the coronavirus in any way!

Prayer Requests Please pray for the repose of the souls of Hilary Jones, Barbara Pendergras, Lillian Skillern and all who have died recently. Also for Fr. Paul Chidgey and all whose anniversaries occur at this time. Please continue to pray for those suffering with Coronavirus, those who have died from the virus and most importantly plead for the end of the pandemic. A Plenary Indulgence is available to all who pray for these intentions under the usual conditions of making Sacramental Confession, Holy Communion (both as soon as possible after the lockdown) and prayers for the intentions of Pope Francis (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). Acts to be performed for the indulgence include read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or recite the Rosary or the Way of the Cross. As is evident to all, the recitation of prayers and the reading of the Bible can be done without leaving home, and therefore in full compliance with the rules to counter the spread of the virus. Please also remember in your prayers: Eric Bryant, Deacon Pasquale Cinotti, Stanley Whitfield, Billy Masterson, Eileen Johnston, Ben Catala, Baby Ronnie Gwyer, Rita Stokes, Biddy Williams, Mary Finnerty, Debbie Burnett (Reynish), Bruce Reynish, Mary Richards, Reg Gough, Mary Roden, Terrence Rose, Peter Okwusogu, Sr. Denise, Jeanette Bassett, John Ryan, Pat Bowen, Daniel Gabriel, Monica Pugsley, Catherine Wenegrieme, Tracey Williams, and all the sick at home or in our hospitals, and all who care for them.

To add a request please contact one of the priests.
