Church measures time differently than the rest of society. By the time we finally celebrate Christmas on De- cember 24 and 25, retailers and radio stations and the Hallmark Channel have been in Christmas mode for two months or more! On the other hand, by the time the ball drops in Times Square to ring in a new calendar year, Church has been living in a new litur- gical year for a month already. Advent is the season that begins our new year. We set aside the four weeks leading up to Christmas for reflec- tion, preparation, anticipation, and prayer. For Lake Edge, these Advent values are particularly important this year. As we enter a transition time as a congregation, it is important to be in- tentional about reflecting on the past and preparing for new beginnings. Advent is a season of Reflection Rather than welcoming the new year with an all-night party, Advent invites us to take a moment to pause, assess our priorities, and appreciate how God comes to us even in silence or grief. In the next weeks, we are asked to reflect on how we have seen God at work in our lives. Where have you felt God’s call or presence in your per- sonal life? How have you experienced God in the Lake Edge community? Take some time this Advent to listen for God’s voice and to notice God’s presence in your life. Advent is a season of Preparation These four weeks are not just about lights and trees and presents and family gatherings. More important than the external holiday prepara- tions are the internal ones. Advent is a time to prepare to meet God face- to-face, as Mary and Joseph and the shepherds did. If Jesus were really going to appear to you in the flesh on Christmas this year, how would you prepare? Jesus us tells us that by welcoming others, we welcome him. (Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Matthew 10:40) How can we, as a congregation, pre- pare to welcome Christ and other people among us? Advent is a season of Anticipation Anticipation goes hand-in-hand with preparation. If we are preparing to welcome Jesus, how do we imagine that interaction will go? Will there be tears of joy or sadness? Will there be laughter or singing? Will there be silence? As a congregation, what are we anticipating? How do we feel about this transition time, and about God’s promise to be with us? Advent is a season of Prayer As we move through the stages of reflection, preparation, and anticipa- tion, prayer will guide us each step along the way. Reaching out to God and listening for a divine response is the most basic purpose of the sea- son of Advent. While we prepare to welcome Emmanuel, God With Us, prayer can help us stay grounded and focused. This year, during Advent, my prayer is that the Lake Edge community will gracefully engage in our time of tran- sition, through the spiritual practices of reflection, preparation, anticipa- tion, and prayer. May God be with you, and with our church family. Volume 35 Issue 12 December, 2018 Lake Edge Lutheran Church ELCA New Beginnings by Pastor Katya Ouchakof Join Us for Christmas Worship! Did You Know . . . Refugees must pass many layers of security checks before being admitted to the United States, a process that can take two years or longer. In most cases, the refugees do not enter the United States until the very end. The 20 step process includes multiple interviews and background checks; three fingerprint screen-ings; reviews and security checks by multiple agencies; cultural orientation and more before being admitted to the United States.Excerpt from "Why It Takes Two Years for Syrian Refugees to Enter the U.S." by Haeyoun Park and Larry Buchanan, published in The New York Times, November 20, 2015.Sources: State Department; Department of Homeland Security; Center for American Progress; U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants

Pastors' Emergency FundThe Worship Mission has designated the first Sunday of each month for donations to the Pastors' Emergency Fund. Most recipients simply need a $25 gift card to

There are also designated "Pastoral Emergency Fund" of-fering envelopes in the pews in the sanctuary. Simply put your name on the envelope and place it in the offering basket. Pastor Mae Jean Zelle, InterimGreetings, and thank you to the staff and volunteers who, on the busy day before Thanksgiving, took time to welcome me warmly and help me get settled in. Since some have asked, please call me Pastor Mae Jean.I am an interim ministry specialist. That means my call is helping congregations

make the (sometimes difficult) transition from one pastor to the next. I have served about 12 interims, spanning about 13 of my 24 years of ordained ministry. Lake Edge is my fifth interim in South Central Synod of Wisconsin. Before this, I was in the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana synod where I also served two

settled (aka”regular”) calls: one in a Dallas suburb and the other at an inner-city, multicultural congregation in Dallas. I am married to Nathan and we live just outside Mt Horeb. I am mom to Gretchen (Middleton) and Karl (Mt Horeb) who is married to Katie and dad to Sarah (6) and Leah (4).

I am honored to have been entrusted with the work of walking with the people of Lake Edge through your in-terim journey. I can imagine that some of you are feel-ing a little lost right now. But I trust that the Holy Spirit will guide our path, healing your hearts along the way, and bring us all to the beginning of a new chapter in the life of Lake Edge Lutheran Church.Peace be yours,Pr Mae Jean

Help Feed the Hungry at Luke House

Thursdays, December 6 & January 3. 2018 Mark Your Calendar! 1st Thursday Each Month4:45-7:00 pm; 310 South Ingersoll St, MadisonLuke House provides dinner at 5:45 P.M., Sunday through Thursday. Meals are provided and shared by faith com-munities throughout the Madison area, with a different menu from each community. Director Matt Rogge (Paul Ashe has retired) encourages community participation and welcomes all, to come and dine. One doesn’t need a black tie to join this feast, no shirt, no shoes, is not writ-ten on the entry, rather, it’s a gathering place of the ser-vant church. The first Thursday of every month Lake Edge Lutheran Church provides the menu and dines as guests of Luke House. We serve 165 children, women, and men. We never have too much food. What may appear as left-overs feeds people at Luke House’s lunch program or is taken to men at Port St. Vincent for the lunches they take to work.We humbly ask God to move our community to reveal the Spirit of Christ in our midst. God enters our lives to become relational and that can be risky, for we never know who will be given on loan, to love for the day.Are you called to feed the hungry in our community? Have you questions? Contact Joan Martin at 839-1370. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!

LELC Global Outreach MissionKnit & Crochet GroupIf you missed our display in November, there are still lap robes and Prayer Shawls available in the Luther Room (just off the library) to take to a relative, neigh-bor or friend. All are welcome. If you can’t come or don’t have time to come, patterns and yarn are available. Contact Joanne Wallendal. Our next big project will be to give Hats, Mittens, and Scarves (that we have made) to school children and adults in the community. Watch for our next Dia-logue article. Thanks for your continued support.Your Global Outreach Mission

Madison Homeless ResourcesA comprehensive list of resources for homeless people is available at www.madcityhomelessresourceguide.com/resource-list.

Cristo Rey Scholarship ProgramLake Edge has had a relationship with Cris-to Rey in Santa Ana, El Salvador for 25 plus years. Several years ago we asked Pastor Carlos how we could help them. He said

the best thing we could do was to provide an educa-tion for the children. Education is not mandatory and requires that the student wear a uniform and have their own school supplies. The cost to send a child to school is about $100.00 which is about a month’s income for a family. Every fall Lake Edge members provide scholar-ship funds, which are wired to Cristo Rey in January be-fore the start of their school year. We have been able to support around 150 children each year. Some of the chil-dren have actually been able to pursue educational op-portunities after high school. If you wish to participate in this program, please identify your donation as Cristo Rey Scholarship. There will be cards in the fellowship area if you wish to donate in someone’s name as an alternative holiday gift.

Bellringers Needed!Sign Up for One Hour ShiftsAre you looking for an easy, fun and rewarding way to volunteer as a family this Christmas sea-son? The Salvation Army of Dane County has an opportunity for you! By ringing bells for only two hours, you will raise over $90 to help house the homeless, feed the hungry, and provide mentoring and education to at-risk children. The Christmas Red Ket-tle Campaign runs from November 9 through December 24, with many locations and shifts available. Please go to ringbellsdane.org to sign up or call 250-2235 for more in-formation.

Building Bridges Bible StudyWednesdays at 6:30 PM at Christ the Solid RockBaptist Church, 1502 Parkside Dr, MadisonEver want to attend a Bible study that is both evocative and provocative? Ever want to be in a place where your thought process about how to interpret the Bible is com-pletely flipped upside down and backwards? Ever want to be challenged intellectually by a pastor who really "gets it", while at the same time is super understanding and willing to help you problem-solve around the chal-lenges in your faith practices as they relate to your under-standing of the Bible? Yes? Attend a Bible study at Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church led by Reverend Everett Mitchell. You might be pleasantly surprised, and you will most definitely be invited to keep coming back for more.

Adult EducationJoin Us in the Adult Ed Room Sundays at 9:30 am

Dec. 2: “Healing Trauma: Be-yond Gangs and Prisons,” a 23-minute documentary about “Homeboy Industries” in Los An-geles. Homeboy Industries helps people who have serious con-viction records to get jobs and

careers, using not only job training and counseling, but also therapy, respect, and love. This program points the way to end mass incarceration – if only we could repli-cate it all over the country. Watch this inspiring film and tell your friends about it.

Dec. 9: The Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Cambo-dia. Presented by Rod Nordby and Nancy Anderson These are small vibrant ministries working in somewhat hostile conditions in both countries. The ministries fo-cus on economic self-sufficiency for the poorest people of each country--chicken projects, vegetable-growing projects, children's feeding programs. Hear the stories of great faith in small actions within our global Lutheran Church. Also, hear from Rod and Nancy about Lutheran immersion mission trips. Consider taking one yourself.

Used Book Sale!Fundraiser for Outlaw Ranch campers There will be a used Book Sale on February 10th. Meanwhile, many of you may want to sort out your books in preparation to give some

away. You may give them to the sale. Bring them to church and put them in the coat room in the bin marked “Books”. Those of you without books, can mark your calendars for February 10th. Come to the sale and buy some wonder-ful books for good winter reading. Watch next January’s newsletter article for more information about additional winter treats for sale. If you might still be interested in attending family camp next August, write Mary Grap-er an e-mail: [email protected]. There is room at camp for your family. (And you can certainly help with the fundraiser)

Finance & Property Thanks to everyone who helped with the fall yard clean-up. Leaves were raked, bushes cut, gutters cleaned and 5 yards of dirt spread over ruts. Thanks to Jim, Jon, Jonathan, Leslie, Doug, Dan, Jeff and Dale for all of their hard work, and to Connie for snacks. The basketball hoop is now up and a thing of beauty. Thanks again to the Gifts Committee for paying for it.The old ERV is off the roof and the roof has been repaired. The water stained tiles in the fellowship area have been replaced and the ceiling looks so much better. After checking with the City of Madison, a new ERV was not required and so instead of paying out over $43,000 for a new ERV, the cost for removal and repair of the roof came to under $9000.00. Another plus is that now there is an electrical outlet (power outlet for the removed ERV) on the roof, very useful for ongoing maintenance and repairs. Planned maintenance for the entire HVAC system will happen December 3rd . We are awaiting the estimate for deliming the HVAC system, another means of extending the life of the system. The carpeting has been cleaned on the first floor, and paid for with garage sale earnings. Thanks again to all the hard workers that hosted the serial garage sales this summer. On December 15th , a Grout Cleaning Party has been scheduled to clean the grout in the sanctuary. If interested in helping with this, please contact Jonathan Pike. It is fitting to have lots of people on their knees at the altar cleaning the grout, and a prayer here and there would not be remiss!
