Between 1950 and 1980, over thirty publications were issued by Editio Musica Budapest consisting of Bartók transcriptions

of lesser or medium difficulty and produced expressly for music students. These transcriptions were made either by noted

Hungarian composers or performers whose work had been sanctioned by Bartók himself or by his legal successors after

he died. The pieces have proved successful not only in Hungarian music teaching but also abroad, as being authentic

transcriptions that preserve the spirit of the original work.

In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the

composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill

in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still

more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.E

Bei Editio Musica Budapest erschienen in den Jahren zwischen 1950 und 1980 mehr als dreißig Bände, die leichte und

mittelschwere Bartók-Transkriptionen speziell für Musikschüler enthielten. Sie stammen von herausragenden ungarischen

Komponisten und Interpreten, deren Arbeiten entweder von Bartók selbst oder – nach dessen Tod – von seinen

Rechtsnachfolgern genehmigt wurden. Diese Stücke, die sich nicht nur in der Musikerziehung in Ungarn, sondern auch

weltweit als erfolgreich erwiesen, können als authentische Transkriptionen betrachtet werden, die den Geist der Originale

bewahrt haben.Im Jahre 2015 – anlässlich des 70. Todestages des Komponisten – starten wir eine Serie unter dem Titel Bartók-Transkriptionen

für Musikschüler. Im Rahmen dessen machen wir nicht nur frühere, bereits bewährte Publikationen unseres Verlags wieder

zugänglich, sondern veröffentlichen auch neue Bearbeitungen, die in jeder Hinsicht den strengen ästhetischen Anforderungen

gerecht werden, wie sie an die früheren gestellt wurden. Wir sind der Hoffnung, dass mit Hilfe unserer Publikationen noch

mehr Schüler in die Welt eines der größten Musikgenies des 20. Jahrhunderts werden einweihen können.

1950 és 1980 között több mint harminc olyan kiadvány jelent meg az Editio Musica Budapest gondozásában, amely könnyű

és közepes nehézségű Bartók-átiratokat tartalmazott kimondottan zenét tanulók számára. Az átiratokat jeles magyar

zeneszerzők és előadóművészek készítették, akiknek munkáját vagy maga Bartók hagyta jóvá, vagy – az ő halála után – a

zeneszerző jogutódjai engedélyezték. E darabok – melyek nemcsak a magyar zeneoktatásban, hanem külföldön is sikeresnek

bizonyultak – olyan autentikus átiratoknak tekinthetők, amelyek megőrzik az eredeti mű szellemiségét.

2015-ben, a zeneszerző halálának 70. évfordulója alkalmából Bartók-átiratok zeneiskolásoknak címmel sorozatot indítunk.

Ennek keretében nemcsak a korábbi, már bevált kiadványainkat tesszük újból hozzáférhetővé, hanem olyan új átiratokat is

megjelentetünk, amelyek mindenben megfelelnek a régebbiekkel szemben támasztott szigorú esztétikai követelményeknek.

Bízunk benne, hogy kiadványaink révén még több zenét tanulót avathatunk be a 20. század egyik legnagyobb zenei

géniuszának világába.

In 2016 we will begin publication of the Complete Critical Edition of the works of one of the greatest 20th-century composers: Béla Bartók. This major scholarly project, which has been in preparation for many years, is a joint publishing venture between G. Henle Publishers and Editio Musica Budapest. The Complete Edition is planned to consist of 48 volumes with Introductions and Notes for the Performer in three languages (English, Hungarian and Ger-man) and Critical Commentaries in English only.It will be distributed worldwide by G. Henle Publishers.

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two excep-tions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. Both the cello and the viola transcriptions follow Bartók’s original faithfully. The former includes fingerings added by the editor.

Béla Bartók komponierte 1931 auf Anregung des deutschen Violinpädagogen Erich Doflein seine 44 Duos für zwei Violinen. Mit zwei Ausnahmen beruhen sämtliche Stücke auf volksmusikalischen Themen, die der Komponist größtenteils selbst auf zahl-reichen Feldforschungsreisen im Karpatenbecken beziehungsweise in Algerien gesammelt hatte. Obwohl diese kleinen Stücke als Bestandteile einer pädagogisch angelegten Serie bestimmt wurden, sind sie vollwertige und höchst wirkungsvolle Vortrags-stücke. Sowohl die Cello- als auch die Viola-Bearbeitungen folgen den Originalstücken Bartóks getreulich; erstere sind auch mit Fingersätzen vom Herausgeber versehen.

The Children’s and Female Choruses were composed in a single burst of creative activity at the zenith of Bartók’s career, in the summer of 1935, between such masterpieces as the String Quartet No. 5 and the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. These short choral pieces are based on folk texts that Bartók further polished and stylized. The music, however, is wholly the composer’s own, although it frequently includes motifs, rhythmic formulas and line structures reminiscent of Hungarian folk songs. Both editions contain nine of the two-part pieces of the set, transcribed idiomatically but faithfully for descant and treble recorders, respectively.

Die Kinder- und Frauenchöre entstanden auf dem Zenit der Karriere Bartóks, im Sommer 1935 in einem einzigen schöpferi-schen Schwung inmitten zweier Meisterwerke – dem Streichquartett Nr. 5 und der Musik für Saiteninstrumente, Schlagzeug und Celesta. Diese kleinen Chorstücke basieren auf Volkstexten, die Bartók noch ausfeilte und stilisierte. Die Musik ist dennoch aus-schließlich die individuelle Schöpfung des Komponisten, auch wenn in ihr häufig an ungarische Volkslieder erinnernde Motive, Rhythmusformeln und Zeilenstrukturen vorkommen. Beide Ausgaben enthalten neun der zweistimmigen Stücke der Reihe. Sie wurden idiomatisch, aber originalgetreu für Sopran- bzw. Altblockflöte übertragen.

Both volumes contain selected transcriptions from well-known sets that Bartók wrote for children and young people: For Chil-dren, Children’s and Female Choruses, 44 Duos and Mikrokosmos. Some are based on folk melodies and some on original themes. Trios consists of 15 pieces and Quartets of 16. In nine of the latter, the bottom part is set for alto flute. The collections serve to draw music students into the realm of a great genius of 20th-century music, while concurrently introducing them to the basic techniques of playing chamber music.

Beide Bände beinhalten ausgewählte Bearbeitungen von bekannten Reihen Bartóks, die für Kinder und Jugendliche komponiert wurden: Für Kinder, Kinder- und Frauenchöre, 44 Duos und Mikrokosmos. In the autumn of 1974 György Kurtág began to copy selected pieces from the series Games, then in preparation, into a grey spiral-bound music notebook for the world-famous pianist Zoltán Kocsis. Kocsis played from this notebook in the first public performance of Games on 4 November 1974. Although the gradually expanding series of piano pieces also appeared in print in eight vol-umes in the course of later decades, he has used this collection – expanded over 32 years by Kurtág – whenever he played pieces from Games in concert.The manuscript gives an exciting insight into Kurtág’s workshop. Musicians can learn more from Kurtág’s handwriting about the works’ performance style and the composer’s intentions than from the printed score. Musicologists can study the genesis of the pieces, as some of them can be seen here in more than one version, others appear in a version different from the printed score. The manuscript facsimile is accompanied by a booklet and a CD. The for-mer contains a personal preface by Zoltán Kocsis and an informative essay by András Wilheim on the collection and the pieces. On the CD we hear eleven works performed by Kocsis, from a recording made in 1982 but not yet com-mercially issued.

Im Herbst 1974 begann György Kurtág ausgewählte Stücke aus der Reihe Spiele in ein graues, spiralgebundenes Notenheft für den weltberühmten Pi-anisten Zoltán Kocsis zu kopieren. Kocsis spielte bei der ersten öffentlichen Aufführung von Spiele am 4. November 1974 aus diesem Notenheft. Obwohl die allmählich anwachsende Reihe von Klavierstücken im Verlauf der nach-folgenden Jahrzehnte in acht Bänden auch im Druck erschien, benutzte Koc-sis diese Sammlung – von Kurtág über 32 Jahre hinweg erweitert – wann im-mer er Stücke aus Spiele im Konzert vortrug. Das Manuskript gibt spannenden Einblick in Kurtágs Werkstatt. Musiker können von Kurtágs Handschrift mehr über den Aufführungsstil und die Intentionen des Komponisten erfahren als von den gedruckten Noten. Mu-sikwissenschaftler wiederum können die Entstehung der Stücke erforschen, denn einige von ihnen kommen hier in mehr als einer Fassung vor, andere aber tauchen in einer von der gedruckten Ausgabe abweichenden Fassung auf.Zur Faksimile-Ausgabe des Manuskripts gehört ein Begleitheft mit CD. Er-steres enthält ein persönliches Vorwort von Zoltán Kocsis und ein Aufsatz von András Wilheim mit wichtigen Informationen zur Sammlung und zu den Stücken. Auf der CD sind elf Werke in einer Aufnahme eingespielt 1982 von Kocsis zu hören, die bislang nicht in den kommerziellen Umlauf gelangt war.

György Kurtág Petite musique solennelle en hommage à Pierre Boulez 90 (2015) for orchestra / für Orchester

The two piano pieces titled …an Egyptian couple on the way to the unknown… were inspired by a statue which can be seen in the Egyptian Collection of the Louvre in Paris. The full-length portrait of the couple holding hands was carved in wood by the unknown master more than 4000 years ago. We don’t know who they are, where they come from, and we also don’t know where they are going. All we see is that they belong together. And in Kurtág’s music we can now also hear their quiet footsteps…Kurtág wrote the pieces in April–May 2013. The first one is dedicated to pia-nist Menahem Pressler, celebrating his 90th birthday that year, the second one (Double) to the French pianist-teacher Valérie Haluk. The two pieces can be performed either together or separately.

Die zwei Klavierstücke mit dem Titel …ägyptisches Paar auf dem Weg ins Un-bekannte… wurden von einer Statue inspiriert, die in der ägyptischen Samm-lung des Louvre in Paris zu sehen ist. Das lebensgroße Portrait des Hände haltenden Paares wurde von einem unbekannten Meister vor mehr als 4000 Jahren aus Holz geschnitzt. Wir wissen weder, wer sie sind, noch woher sie kommen oder wohin sie gehen. Wir sehen nur, dass sie zusammengehören. Und in Kurtágs Musik können wir nun auch ihre leisen Schritte hören… Kurtág komponierte seine Stücke im April–Mai 2013. Das erste ist dem Pia-nisten Menahem Pressler, der jenes Jahr seinen 90. Geburtstag feierte, gewid-met, das zweite (Double) der französischen Pianistin und Lehrerin Valérie Haluk. Die beiden Stücke können entweder gemeinsam oder getrennt aufge-führt werden.

Kurtág’s newest orchestral work was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival on the occasion of Pierre Boulez’s 90th birthday. It was first performed on 23 August 2015 by the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra under the direction of Matthias Pintscher.

This volume contains Liszt's earliest pieces written in a Hungarian style. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items has been published for the first time in a schol-arly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapso-dies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846; it was later reworked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st Hungarian Rhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves.A detailed preface in English, German and Hungarian, including new research results, as well as numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition’s contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included.

Die gesamte Reihe der Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien besteht aus 11 Stücken und wurde hier zum ersten Mal in einer wissenschaftlichen Ausgabe veröffentlicht. In 2014 we started renewing the separate editions of solo piano works published in the New Liszt Complete Critical Edition. The seven volumes that renewed thus provide not only authentic texts of the works based on scholarly research, but also earlier versions, manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes. Each volume contains prefaces in English and German which provide relevant information on the genesis and performance practice of the given work.

New Publications VIOLONCELLO

Hungarian Rondo was composed by Zoltán Kodály in December 1917, draw-ing on material from the incidental music he had written for Zsigmond Móricz’s play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The rondo form is shaped out of four new-style Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody. Kodály prepared the piece in two somewhat different versions, one for two clarinets, two bassoons and string orchestra, and the other for cello and piano. The or-chestral version received its first performance in Vienna on 12 January 1918 at a “historical concert” organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was premièred by Miklós Zsámboky and Ottó Herz at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927.Neither version appeared in print in the composer’s lifetime. The version for string orchestra was edited in 1976 by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy (and is distributed as a hire material under the order number K-1). The cello ver-sion appears here in print for the first time. The publication is based on the composer’s surviving manuscript and a contemporary manuscript copy of this. The fingerings are by the editor.

Das Ungarische Rondo komponierte Zoltán Kodály im Dezember 1917 aus dem Material der Begleitmusik, die er für Zsigmond Móricz’ Theaterstück Pacsirtaszó (Lerchengesang) geschrieben hatte. In diesem Werk sind vier ungarische Volkslieder neuen Stils und eine instrumentale Tanzmelodie in Rondoform festgehalten. Kodály fertigte das Stück in zwei einigermaßen von-einander abweichenden Fassungen an: für ein kleines Orchester aus zwei Kla-rinetten, zwei Fagotten und Streichern bestehend sowie für Violoncello und Klavier. Die Fassung für kleines Orchester wurde am 12. Januar 1918 im Rah-men des vom Kriegsministerium der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie veranstalteten „Historischen Konzerts“ in Wien uraufgeführt. Die Cello-Fas-sung führten Miklós Zsámboky und Ottó Herz am 4. November 1927 an der Budapester Musikakademie urauf. Keine der beiden Fassungen erschien zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten im Druck. Die Fassung für Orchester gaben 1976 Ferenc Farkas und István Máriassy heraus (als Leihmaterial im Vertrieb unseres Verlages unter der Nummer K-1), die Cello-Fassung erscheint in dieser Publikation zum ersten Mal. Unserer Edition liegen die erhaltene Manuskript des Komponisten und eine zeitgenössische, ebenfalls handgeschriebene Abschrift zugrunde. Die Fingersätze stammen vom Herausgeber.

Between 1950 and 1980, over thirty publications were issued by Editio Musica Budapest consisting of Bartók transcriptions of lesser or medium difficulty and produced expressly for music students. These transcriptions were made either by noted Hungarian composers or performers whose work had been sanctioned by Bartók himself or by his legal successors after he died. The pieces have proved successful not only in Hungarian music teaching but also abroad, as being authentic transcriptions that preserve the spirit of the original work.In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Bei Editio Musica Budapest erschienen in den Jahren zwischen 1950 und 1980 mehr als dreißig Bände, die leichte und mittelschwere Bartók-Transkriptionen speziell für Musikschüler enthielten. Sie stammen von herausragenden ungarischen Komponisten und Interpreten, deren Arbeiten entweder von Bartók selbst oder – nach dessen Tod – von seinen Rechtsnachfolgern genehmigt wurden. Diese Stücke, die sich nicht nur in der Musikerziehung in Ungarn, sondern auch weltweit als erfolgreich erwiesen, können als authentische Transkriptionen betrachtet werden, die den Geist der Originale bewahrt haben.Im Jahre 2015 – anlässlich des 70. Todestages des Komponisten – starten wir eine Serie unter dem Titel Bartók-Transkriptionen für Musikschüler. Im Rahmen dessen machen wir nicht nur frühere, bereits bewährte Publikationen unseres Verlags wieder zugänglich, sondern veröffentlichen auch neue Bearbeitungen, die in jeder Hinsicht den strengen ästhetischen Anforderungen gerecht werden, wie sie an die früheren gestellt wurden. Wir sind der Hoffnung, dass mit Hilfe unserer Publikationen noch mehr Schüler in die Welt eines der größten Musikgenies des 20. Jahrhunderts werden einweihen können.

1950 és 1980 között több mint harminc olyan kiadvány jelent meg az Editio Musica Budapest gondozásában, amely könnyű és közepes nehézségű Bartók-átiratokat tartalmazott kimondottan zenét tanulók számára. Az átiratokat jeles magyar zeneszerzők és előadóművészek készítették, akiknek munkáját vagy maga Bartók hagyta jóvá, vagy – az ő halála után – a zeneszerző jogutódjai engedélyezték. E darabok – melyek nemcsak a magyar zeneoktatásban, hanem külföldön is sikeresnek bizonyultak – olyan autentikus átiratoknak tekinthetők, amelyek megőrzik az eredeti mű szellemiségét.2015-ben, a zeneszerző halálának 70. évfordulója alkalmából Bartók-átiratok zeneiskolásoknak címmel sorozatot indítunk. Ennek keretében nemcsak a korábbi, már bevált kiadványainkat tesszük újból hozzáférhetővé, hanem olyan új átiratokat is megjelentetünk, amelyek mindenben megfelelnek a régebbiekkel szemben támasztott szigorú esztétikai követelményeknek. Bízunk benne, hogy kiadványaink révén még több zenét tanulót avathatunk be a 20. század egyik legnagyobb zenei géniuszának világába.

The volumes of the Ad libitum series contain duos, trios and quartets of easy, medium and advanced levels of difficulty, which are playable with various combinations of instruments. Ad libitum Family Edition volumes are recom-mended mainly for families or groups of friends where at least two people play an instrument. The composer wrote of his work as follows: “In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown am-ateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmo-ny and counterpoint, I attempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.”

So schrieb der Komponist über sein Werk: „In der ungarischen Musik sind natürlich die Volkslieder sehr wichtig, doch die alten Melodien und Tänze spielen in unserer Musik eine geringere Rol-le. Für dieses Werk habe ich mich von Tänzen des 17. Jahrhunderts anregen lassen, die von unbekannten Dilettanten, also ziemlich einfach, geschrieben worden waren. Die meisten waren in der zwischen dem 14. und 18. Jahrhun-dert geläufigen Tabulaturschrift notiert. In den vierziger Jahren begann ich mich erstmals für diese Musik zu interessieren. Ich war davon so fasziniert, dass ich mich entschloss, sie wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Ich fügte die kleinen achttaktigen Tänze zu dreiteiligen und Rondoformen zusammen. Ausgehend von der frühbarocken Harmonik und Kontrapunktik habe ich mich in einer Art ungarischen provinziellen Barocks versucht.“

Lendvay Kamilló az 1950-es években pályáját kezdő magyar zeneszerző generáció egyik legjelentősebb alkotója. Életműve színpadi, oratorikus, zenekari, kamara- és szólóhangszeres műveket egyaránt magában foglal. Zenéjében fontos szerepet kapnak a klasszikus formák és műfajok. A 20. századi magyar mesterek műveiből leszűrt tapasztalatok sok humorral és számos groteszk elemmel együtt egyéni stílusként jelennek meg műveiben.

1928. december 28-án született Budapesten. 1949-től 1957-ig zeneszer-zés- és karmesteri tanulmányokat végzett a budapesti Zeneakadémián Viski János és Somogyi László irányításával. 1960–66 között az állami Bábszínház zenei vezetője, 1966–68 között a Magyar Néphadsereg mű-

vészegyüttesének zenei vezetője, 1970-től 1974-ig a Fővárosi Operettszínház karmestere és (1972-től) művészeti vezetője volt. 1972-től 1992-es nyugdíjba vonulásáig a Zeneakadémián tanított, 1976-tól a zeneelmélet tanszéket vezette.

Gordonkára és zenekarra írt Pezzo concertatója 1975-ben második díjat nyert a Trieszti Nemzet-közi Zeneszerzőversenyen. 1979-ben A tisztességtudó utcalány című operájának lemezfelvétele elnyerte a francia Grand Prix International du Disque Lyrique díjat. A párizsi Festival d’Art Sacre felkérésére írt Via crucist az Église de la Trinité katedrálisban mutatták be 1989-ben.

Munkásságát három alkalommal Erkel Ferenc-díjjal (1962, 1964, 1978), Érdemes Művész (1981) és Kiváló Művész (1996) címmel, Bartók–Pásztory-díjjal (1989, 2005), Ezüst Toll díjjal (1998), Kossuth-díjjal (1998) és Artisjus Zenei Díjjal (2003) ismerték el.

Kamilló Lendvay is one of the most important members of the generation of Hungarian com-posers whose careers began in the 1950s. His œuvre includes theatrical, oratorical, orchestral, chamber and solo instrumental works. Classical forms and genres have a significant role in his music. Ideas gained from the works of 20th-century Hungarian masters, together with abundant humour and many grotesque elements blend into an individual style in his works.

He was born on 28 December 1928 in Budapest. From 1949 to 1957 he was pupil of János Viski at the Academy of Music in Budapest and also studied conducting with László Somogyi. In 1960–66 he was musical director of the State Puppet Theatre, and in 1966–68 musical director of the Hungarian Army Art Ensemble. From 1970 he worked as conductor and from 1972 as musical director at the Budapest Operetta Theater until 1974. In 1972–1992 he was professor at the Academy of Music in Budapest, from 1976 the Head of the Music Theory Department.

His Pezzo concertato for violoncello and orchestra won second prize at Trieste International Composers’ Competition in 1975. The recording of his one-act opera, The Respectful Prostitute won the Grand Prix International du Disque Lyrique in 1979. The world premiere of Via crucis (commissioned by the Festival d’Art Sacre, Paris) was held at the cathedral Église de la Trinité in Paris in 1989.

Prizes and awards: Three times Erkel Prize winner (1962, 1964, 1978), Merited Artist (1981), Bartók-Pásztory Award (1989, 2005), Excellent Artist (1996), Silver Pen Award (1998), Kossuth Prize (1998), Artisjus Music Award (2003).

The piece, commissioned by Eszter Lázár and the Hungarian Radio, was com-posed on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Béla Bartók’s death. It was premiered by János Fejérvári on 1 October 1995 in the Hungarian Radio. The fantasy-like one-movement composition resembles the structure of classical sonatina. Study is an important piece of contemporary viola music and de-serves to be a significant part of not only international concert repertoire but also of academic-level music education.

Das von Eszter Lázár und dem Ungarischen Radio in Auftrag gegebene Stück wurde anlässlich des 50. Todestages von Béla Bartók komponiert. Uraufge-führt wurde es von János Fejérvári am 1. Oktober 1995 im Ungarischen Ra-dio. Die fantasievolle, einsätzige Komposition gleicht in ihrer Struktur der klassischen Sonatine. The main objective of this book is to teach music theory through practical activity. Its aims at developing comprehensive musicianship by means of thor-ough understanding of the materials provided, providing guidance in stylistic analysis and authentic performance, and giving an opportunity for students to integrate what they learn into practice, improvisation, and composition. This descriptive study is an account of 200 years of Hungarian military music.

László Marosi was born in Sárvár, Hungary. He studied conducting at the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, with Tamás Breitner. From 1982 to 1997 he was conductor of the Hungarian Central Army Wind Orchestra and recorded several works by Franz Liszt and contemporary Hungarian composers such as Kamilló Lendvay, Frigyes Hidas, László Dubrovay, Iván Patachich, János Decsényi, István Láng, and György Ránki. He also widely toured with the Orchestra throughout Europe. Besides, he taught conduction at the Teacher Training Faculty of the

Liszt Academy, conducted the Academy’s Wind Band, and, from 1993 he became conductor of the professional Budapest Symphonic Band. Between 1989 and 1994, Marosi conducted more than fifty performances annually with the Budapest State Operetta Theater Orchestra. He was invited as a guest conductor by the Matáv Symphony Orchestra in Budapest, and toured Europe with the Strauss Symphony Orchestra in 1996 and 1998.

Following his professional career in Hungary, he earned a MM in conducting and a PhD in music education at Florida State University with James Croft and Philip Spurgeon. He frequently conducted the University Symphony Orchestra, including acclaimed performances of the music of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shulamit Ran. As Visiting Professor, Dr. Marosi served as Associate Conductor of the FSU Wind Orchestra during the 2002/2003 academic year.

As guest conductor, lecturer and adjudicator he has appeared throughout Europe, England, Israel, South Africa, Namibia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico and in the United States.

For his contributions to Hungarian contemporary music, he was twice awarded the Artisjus prize by the Hungarian Composers’ Union. In 1997 he was awarded the FAME prize for his international conducting activities and won the RIA award for his international research activities at University of Central Florida in 2012.
