Mataranka School Council Information

Just a reminder for anyone buying goods at Katherine Camping on Fishing to mention Mataranka School when they do as a 10% value on all money spent goes to the school council to use for fundrais-ing. This year it will be going towards a Christmas Raffle. Stay tuned for some great prizes.

The Mataranka Bushmans Carnival contacted the School Council recently to notify that they were wind-ing up the organization and would like to donate any outstanding funds in their account to the school. The Mataranka School principal then offered these funds to the Never Never Festival, which was greatly appreciated. It is a great start for Leah to get the Festival on a good financial footing.

The Mataranka Bushmans Carnival Committee would like to thank all the volunteers over the years that put in so much hard work into making the carnival such a great event. The MBCI started in the late ‘60s in conjunction with the annual bush races. The event was famous for its bull chariots race, greasy pig chase and rooster chase. Up to 3 rodeos were held per year in good times, and good prize money and facilities were available thanks to sponsorship from Darwin, Katherine and Mataranka, and stock dona-tions from local stations. Founding families included the Martin’s, Fishlock’s, Garland’s and McFarlane’s.

Written By Anthony Heaslip, Mataranka Primary School Council Chairpersons.

Mataranka School would like to thank everyone who helped to provide the new shade for our playground. A special thank you goes to

the School Council who fundraised tire-lessly for two years. Another special thank you goes to the Better Half Club for their generous donation of $5,000. And thank you to everyone who buys raffle tickets, drops coins in the collection boxes or supports the school in various ways.

A Note from the Police Mataranka Police along with the Mataranka Fire and Rescue Group would like to thank Roper Gulf Regional Council, Roper River Transport and the Mataranka Homestead for their assistance in the search that took place in and around Mataranka towards the end of November 2014. The organisations mentioned provided Police and oth-er volunteers with equipment and refreshments during the two day search. Mataranka Police would also like to remind residents that motor vehicle registry duties are carried out on each Wednesday morning, unless an urgent matter arises. Alternatively if Police are not available all motor vehicle reg-istry enquiries can be carried out by logging onto www.mvr.nt.gov.au Most people will be aware by now a new Police Officer, Vanessa WALLIS, is stationed in Mataranka. Vanessa was previously stationed in Katherine however is now part of the Mataranka Community so if you see her in and around town, introduce yourself to her and say hello. With the Christmas holiday period fast approaching Police would like to take this opportunity to remind all resi-dents of Mataranka to drive with care, stay safe, take regular breaks and don’t drink and drive. Police will be en-forcing traffic laws during the festive season. Also over the festive holiday season, people travel to be with family and loved ones. While people are away, it is a good idea to make arrangements for friends to look after your prop-erty and ensure it stays safe. Please also remember to lock your houses prior to departing for holidays. It is great to see that a number of local residents have started decorating their houses and yards with Christmas decorations. Mataranka Police have also commenced decorating with more decorations to be put up soon. Mataranka Police wishes all residents of Mataranka and the surrounding area, a very Merry Christmas and a Hap-py and Prosperous New Year. Written by Thomas Chalk, Remote Sergeant, Mataranka Police Station.

A message from the school principal I would like to publicly thank the quiet achievers of the Mataranka School Coun-cil for their work throughout the year. Anthony Heaslip (Chairperson), Tracey-Anne Wilson (Secretary), Leah Niehus, Virginia Boon, Cassie Younghusband, Veronica Russo, Beki Bull (School Representative), Jayne Rachor, Di Bowman – you make our school a worthwhile facility for our children so they can be safe, happy, confident and reach far beyond their potential. Thank you. I look forward to working with you in 2015. The end of year School concert will be held Wednesday 10th December 6:00pm. School starts back on Tuesday 27th Janu-ary. Written by Darren Pittaway, Teaching Principal, Mataranka Primary School.
