Neutral Host Small Cell Networks

Wireless 20/20 has been examining the role of neutral host small cells as a critical element of mobile network densification.

Focused on the business case for distributed network solutions in outdoor urban areas, subway systems and train stations with a high density of mobile broadband users.

Several leading tower companies and neutral host providers are looking for small cell vendors to address the need for multi-carrier small cells.

Neutral Host Small Cell Solutions

For example, Crown Castle believes that small cell and DAS networks will be an important and fast growing to complement its traditional macro tower installations.

Crown Castle has also deployed one of the country’s largest fiber and outdoor small cell networks

Crown Castle has outdoor fiber-fed small cell nodes along these routes to serve all four MNOs.

Crown Castle competes with ExteNet Systems, Mobilitie, Zayo, Level 3 and American Tower in the fast growing market for neutral host, multi-carrier small cell networks.

• Crown Castle owns or has rights more than 15,000 miles of fiber in more than 20 large US metros,

• Crown Castle has deployed approximately 15,000 outdoor small cell nodes along these fiber routes including a combination of newly built and upgrades to pre-existing nodes.

• CC is now well positioned to address the desire for dark fiber backhaul solutions for small cell deployments by all four major US MNOs

Sprint is planning to deploy 70,000 outdoor small cells over the next few years.

Most of the sites require zoning, permitting and negotiations with municipal authorities.

A single-carrier small cell deployment would require roughly the same number of discrete sites, and Sprint would have to secure the sites and negotiate terms for deployment.

Small Cells in NYC More than 2,200 cells have already been deployed

in NYC, and another 8,800 applications are pending approval from carriers and neutral-host providers

Many areas of NYC are already saturated, and the city is looking to exchange old streetlight poles for multitenant poles with fiber backhaul where small cells could accommodate all four carriers.

Sprint alone wants to deploy 2,000 new small cells in 18 months in NYC and is considering the use of multi-tenant locations to place small cell equipment.

Verizon Wireless LTE Small Cells Integrated into Street Furniture

Verizon installed small cells in JCDecaux Kiosks to enhance network performance in San Francisco.

Verizon plans to deploy integrated in over 9,000 JCDecaux US outdoor street furniture assets in NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco.

JCDecaux is designing, providing and deploying Street Furniture elements that can elegantly house the outdoor small cells

ExteNet Outdoor Small Cell Network Verizon partnered with ExteNet to deploy an

outdoor small cell network with more than 400 fiber-fed small cell nodes mounted on city-owned steel light posts and wooden utility poles throughout the financial district of San Francisco.

ExteNet is also working with Aldridge Chicago to deploy a distributed 4G network in the Chicago subway with all four mobile carriers participating, covering all 22 miles of tunnels and in the stations with plans for service on the trains. © Copyright Wireless 20/20, LLC. – All rights reserved

Small Cell Deployment Challenge

Mounting Locations with Power and Backhaul

Many dense urban areas are already saturated for independent small cells

Cities are looking to exchange streetlight poles for multi-tenant poles which can house neutral host small cells in the base or the neck with fiber backhaul to support all four carriers

Manufacturers need to create designs that mimic the existing streetlight poles, especially those in historic and landmark areas
