This term, we're trying something new!You may have noticed that this term we are sending weekly SMS messages about your child’s learning. These messages are being sent to all parents and carers of students in Years 1 to 4. Our school chose to take part in this new program being run by the Department of Education. The program will run for the duration of Term Two.The idea is to inform parents about the learning which is occurring at school. The messages have been drafted by the grade leaders based on the learning which is occurring this term in those grades. The messages are sent out by the office staff each Thursday this term. Each text message is personalised with the child's name and parent's name, and is signed off by the class teacher. We hope this contributes to connecting parents to their child’s learning and is evidence that the school community working in partnership is one way of improving learning outcomes for our children. Please do not reply to the text message as there is no monitoring of the text replies. If you would like to contact your child's teacher, please either contact the school or email them directly to request a meeting. If you would like to send feedback about these text messages, please send an email to Heather Strachan (Deputy Principal) at [email protected]. In Week 8 of this term, you will receive a link to a survey which asks for your feedback on the text messages. Please complete this survey to let the Department of Education know what you think about the program.

ToiletsI thank the Department of Education for a refresh of the boy and girl toilets. We are expecting new toilets in the school upgrade. In the meantime, the toilets have had a much needed freshen up with internal painting and cleaning of the tiles."The difference in the toilets is amazing and from the roof to the floor it’s spotless." (Maddie, Year 4)

Cross CountryA well organised Cross-Country Carnival was held for Years 3-6 last Tuesday at Forsyth Park. Thank you to Mr Stone and Mr Foley for organising this event. The list of results are below. The top 5 runners in each age group will progress to the Zone Carnival on Friday 21 May.

Five questions for parents to ask their children about their dayThere was some healthy discussion created by these questions last week. Here are the questions again. These questions come from a book called ‘Clarity’ (Lyn Sharratt, p65). 1. What did you learn today?2. How did you do?3. What did you do if you didn’t understand?4. How can you improve your learning?5. What were you most proud of?

What works bestAt NBPS, we are committed to developing effective partnerships and engaging parents, carers and the community as partners in supporting student learning. This is an important component of our 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan. For more information, please see our school website.

The NSW Department of Education released an update of some of the most significant research into effective teaching. This report is called ‘What Works Best: 2020 update’ and outlines eight evidence-based practices that teachers use in their classrooms to support improved student learning.

Below is one of the eight ‘What Works Best’ practices for effective teaching, including some conversation tips to help you support these practices at home. In next week’s newsletter, we will be introducing explicit teaching.

1. High expectationsStudents learn best when teachers have high expectations. Having high expectations means that teachers work hard to gain students’ interest, encourage them to learn new things, provide help when they need it, are clear and consistent about how they want students to behave and learn, and vary the way they teach to meet students’ needs.

Check in with your child• Did you try something new today?• What was it? • How did you go? • How do you feel when you’re learning

something new?

Intention to apply for Year 5 to an Opportunity Class in 2022Applications for Year 5 entry to an Opportunity Class in 2022 close this Friday, 7 May 2021.

Opportunity Classes cater for academically gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Successful students will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an Opportunity Class for Years 5 and 6.

Testing and assessmentApplications for Opportunity Class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. Students who wish to be considered for opportunity class placement will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 21 July 2021.

How to applyIf you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2022, you need to apply between Tuesday 20 April 2021 and Friday 7 May 2021. You will need to access the online application at HERE. You must not use the child’s email address.

If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the team for assistance.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.Important – the school cannot apply on your behalf.

EAL/DEALD students, twins, Talya and Yonothan Zolar, had a delightful lesson interacting with the world. Using a magnetic map, recently donated from our wonderful P&C, they realised how far Australia is from other countries of our world.

It was a fun learning experience being able to name, remove and discuss each interactive piece. Thank you to the P&C for this remarkable and thoughtful donation.Mrs Rosina WatsonEALD Teacher

School UniformTraditionally at Neutral Bay Public School, winter school uniform is worn after the long weekend on June 15 (Term 2, Week 9). However, children may begin wearing their winter uniform from Term 2. We sometimes get warm days and cold days in April and May, and therefore a mix of summer and winter uniforms is acceptable. Details of official school uniform can be found on our website HERE.

There are second hand uniform shop sales throughout the term. New uniforms can be purchased through Flexischools.

Skoolbag AppWe encourage all parents to download the 'Skoolbag' App. This is one of the major communication platforms the school uses. Information on how to access 'Skoolbag' can be obtained by clicking this link https://www.moqproducts.com.au/skoolbag/installation-instructions/.

Anaphylaxis - No nut products at schoolWe strive to create a safe environment for all students. A number of students in our school have severe allergies or are anaphylactic to nuts. Those students can suffer life-threatening consequences if they come into contact with a product containing nuts, or even a student who has consumed nuts. For this reason, nuts and nut products are not to be sent to school. As part of our school and Department of Education Anaphylaxis Policy, we thank you for your assistance by providing recess and lunch for your child that does not involve nuts or nut products. This includes products such as peanut butter, Nutella, muesli bars biscuits, cakes and chocolates if they contain nuts or nut products. If you require further information, please contact the school.

Sharing of food is not permittedThere remains restrictions on the sharing of food. Sending in cakes or special treats to share with your child’s class for birthdays and special occasions is not permitted. Please ensure no food, including cakes, cupcakes or pre-packaged food, is shared by children with the class for celebrations. On Flexischools, the P&C offer a ‘birthday bucket’ for children who have birthdays and would like to share the occassion with their classmates. The school has a strict no lollies policy. Please do not send these items to school to be handed out.

NBPS is looking to put a Snowsports team together to compete in the Sydney Region Interschools Snowsports Championship, during the second term school holidays, from Monday 5 to Friday 9 July at Thredbo, NSW.

COVID GuidelinesParents and carers are now able to enter school grounds, but should continue to follow COVID-safe practices, including social distancing between adults of 1.5 metres and following hygiene practices.

All visitors to the school site must sign in using the Service NSW QR code and sign in at the school office, to acknowledge that they comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers each time they visit.

Parents and carers are reminded that students must not attend school if they are unwell, even with the mildest of symptoms. Students must return a negative COVID-19 test and be symptom free prior to returning to school.

Our routines for drop off and pick up procedures are continuing. It is our preference that parents ‘kiss and drop’ at the gates in the morning and pick up in the afternoon as per current routines, as it is difficult to maintain social distancing on a small school site such as ours. The routine for dismissal is:• 3:10pm Dismissal of Kindergarten and Year 1

(Bydown gates) and Year 2 (grass gate). Older siblings of K-2 children in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

• 3:15pm Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 are dismissed from classrooms. Children attending tennis, dance, karate and drama meet at the Music Room

Community News

Term 2 2021

Walking or riding to and from school with your child helps:

• Reduce traffic and improve road safety.• Reduce our carbon footprint.• Promote physical activity.• Provide an opportunity for supervising adults to

talk with their child about road safety.

Holding HandsUntil your child is at least 8 years old, hold their hand:• On the footpath.• In the car park.• When crossing the road.

Up until at least 10 years old, supervise your child very closely, holding their hand when crossing the road.

Key messages for kids to stay safe when walking and riding:

• Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time you cross a road or driveway.

• Stay alert, look up – don’t get distracted by your phone.

• Use pedestrian crossings where possible.• Always wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter

or skateboard.• Take extra care around trucks and buses – they

can’t always see you.

Why not walk to school on Friday 14 May for Walk Safely to School Day!

For more information, visit walk.com.au

If you are driving, always look out for people walking or riding. And remember: slow down

to 40 when bus lights flash.

Walk or ride. It’s fun!

Have you ever wondered what out School Crossing Supervisors (that’s their official title) actually look like under their high visibilty uniforms? This is Anthony, who has been performing this invaluable role for two and half years. In the beginning he was on his own manning the crossing in Bydown Street and only just recently has been joined by two extra people who now man Ben Boyd Road and Yeo Street. Anthony is retired and lives in Cremorne. He loves the social aspect of his job.

Our School Crossing Supervisors
