Celebrating Our Dedicated SupportersMore than 70 guests joined Neuhaus
at this year’s annual reading circle as
we showed our appreciation for our
supporters. The event, held at the
Briar Club, featured brief remarks from
Neuhaus President & CEO Dr. Tracy
Weeden and Development Committee
Co-Chair Medora Boone, who has a son
with dyslexia. The impact of Neuhaus’
professional learning was highlighted in a
video which featured touching, personal
stories of five students with dyslexia in
Lufkin Independent School District.
Many long-time supporters brought
several guests to introduce them to the
mission and services of Neuhaus which
are conducted throughout Texas and
nationally.
The Neuhaus Education Center Reading
Circle is a giving society of individuals
who give $1,000 or more cumulatively
in a calendar year. Donors automatically
become members once they have
contributed $1,000 or more within the
timeframe. Members of the reading circle
receive special recognition throughout
the year on printed materials, Neuhaus’
website, and at special events. Also,
during the event, the Gift of Literacy was
unveiled. It is an opportunity to make a
gift to Neuhaus in honor of a teacher,
friend, or loved one. Honorees will
receive a special acknowledgment of the
contribution.

Neuhaus was well represented at the recent 2017 Annual Reading, Literacy & Learning Conference hosted by the International Dyslexia Association in Atlanta, GA, November 8-11. It is the premiere professional development conference dedicated to dyslexia. Experts worldwide educate attendees on the latest research, remediation, and more. The conference is held for both families and professionals such as teachers, administrators, reading specialists, researchers, university faculty, psychologists, physicians, and tutors.
Neuhaus was an exhibitor at the conference, which was attended by approximately 2,000 people. Neuhaus’ state partnership team manned a booth and helped spread the word about the services and programs the organization offers. A full-page ad of the Center was printed on the inside front cover of the conference guide.
President & CEO Tracy Weeden, Ed.D, was a co-presenter of an education session for school district superintendents entitled “The Devil is in the Details: Scaling Literacy Initiatives for Successful and Sustainable Change.” Neuhaus Vice-President of Academic Planning and Research Regina Boulware-Goodson, Ph.D., chaired a full-day symposium entitled “The Five Ws of Structured Literacy: How to Build a Successful Model to Improve Literacy on Your Campus.”
Vice-President of Family Support and Adult Literacy Mary H. Yarus, M.Ed., LDT, CALT, discussed Dyslexia 101 for parents.
Director of Academic Planning and Research Rebecca Tolson served as conference co-chair, and Dr. Boulware-Goodson also served on the conference planning committee. Several Neuhaus educators attended the conference.
From sentences to paragraphs, Neuhaus will soon offer a new professional learning course, Written Composition 2: Revision. This online course is part of a comprehensive, online writing toolbox for teachers. The series includes Multisensory Grammar, Written Composition Fundamentals, and Written Composition 2: Revision. The class is scheduled for release in December. For more information, visit www.neuhaus.org/educators/online-classes.
The goal is to help young writers conquer one of the most difficult tasks in the writing process – revision. Teachers will be shown how to teach revision in clear, comprehensible steps. There are 20 modeled lessons
which focus on four areas of revision, organization, clarity, content, and flow.
Lessons are modeled in the online class, which can be taken for credit or simply for reference.
An accompanying instructor’s manual contains several teacher aids, including text, from a master teacher to exemplify the element being taught; a model for teachers to use during instruction; an
activity to practice specific skills; a debriefing of the revising activity; and a directive of how to use the new learning to revise the student’s own writing. Rubrics are included to document student growth.

The story is so compelling that Hollywood came calling and
made it into a movie!Neuhaus will also shine the light on the Butler

Underwriter opportunities for the luncheon range from $35,000 to $2,000. To secure your
table, please visit Neuhaus.org/luncheon or contact [email protected]. Individual ticket sales will begin in February.
On Wednesday, April 11, 2018, Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz will join Neuhaus at the Briar Club for the Lenox M. Reed Seminar as the keynote speakers. These world-renowned physician-scientists are leaders in the field of dyslexia research and diagnosis. The couple will share their deep knowledge of dyslexia with audience members focusing on the latest research findings. Please save the date for this incredible event!
