description

Classic Neuburg Siliceous Earth – also called Sillitin and Sillikolloid – is a natural combination of corpuscular, crypto-crystalline and amorphous silica and lamellar kaolinite: a loose structure impossible to separate by physical methods. As a result of natural formation, the silica portion exhibits a round grain shape and consists of aggregated crypto-crystalline primary particles of about 200 nm diameter which are covered by amorphous silica opal-like. Such a unique structure is responsible for a relatively high specific surface area and oil absorption, which result, besides rheological activity, also in a whole range of application advantages.

Classic Neuburg Siliceous Earth – also called Sillitin and Sillikolloid –

is a natural combination of corpuscular, crypto-crystalline and amor-

phous silica and lamellar kaolinite: a loose structure impossible to

separate by physical methods. As a result of natural formation, the

silica portion exhibits a round grain shape and consists of aggrega-

ted crypto-crystalline primary particles of about 200 nm diameter

which are covered by amorphous silica opal-like. Such a unique

structure is responsible for a relatively high specific surface area and

oil absorption, which result, besides rheological activity, also in a

whole range of application advantages.

Neuburg Siliceous Earth is a raw

material with a history – one that star-

ted 95 million years ago! At that time,

large parts of South Germany were

covered by the sea, and in a bay

within what is now Bavaria, the various

strata of Neuburg Siliceous Earth were

deposited on limestone sediment

dating from the later Jurassic period

(fig. 1). After the sea receded, the

limestone strata collapsed, forming

so-called karst funnels into which the

siliceous earth fell and was preserved

(fig. 2). This is where a raw material

was created which – wherever you

search for it on this earth – is totally

unique (fig. 3).

Step 1–3: Charging and crushing of raw earth,

separation of coarse material by vibrator screens.

Step 4–5: Dissolving, separation of gravel fractions

and dispersion in water.

Step 6: Separation of sand fractions and classification

into different grain sizes by hydrocyclones.

Step 7–10: Densification, storage and blending of individual

product types in the form of slurry.

Step 11–12: Removal of water in filter presses; elimination

of residual water in dryers.

The following table and diagram summarize the physical properties

and the chemical composition of the Neuburg Siliceous Earth. The

most important variations are particle size and color.

The Neuburg Siliceous Earth is available in four different grain

fractions.

The determination of these particle size

distributions was based on Fraunhofer

diffraction spectra. The analyses were

run on a laser instrument Master-sizer S

from Malvern.

Product Characteristics of puriss Grades

• Created by a downstream process.

• The extremely low residue > 40 μm is significantly reduced even

more.

• Significant reduction of abrasivity effect of this product series.

Protection of user’s processing equipment (e. g. mixers, tools,

airless spray nozzles).

• The puriss products are the first choice for all nonaqueous

formulas thanks to the excellent dispersion behavior.

They are recommended for solvent-free, resin-bonded systems

like polyester, epoxy and polyurethane.

• puriss versions are ideal for thin layers.

• Improved mechanical properties primarily for adhesives

and sealants. The values shown in the table are to be considered as guidelines only. Material specifications and

technical data sheets for all products are part of our sales conditions and are available on our web site
