Summer! Just the sound of the word is refreshing. Beaches and suntan lotion… Good times, good tunes… And great memories. Hey, let’s face it, “School’s out for summer!” Does it get any better than this?

Truth is… July, August, September and February have this in common: Life! While you’re on vacation, life keeps happening. While you wash your car or tend to your tomatoes, life goes on. Whether you’re putting aloe on your sunburn, or calamine on your bug bites, life just keeps rolling along.

And whatever life dishes out, good times, bad times or just plain in-between times, Jesus is still on the throne. He remains the constant that gives life its greatest zest!

So, wherever your summer takes you, to the cottage, to the city; to your family reunion or to that long awaited break from _________ (fill in the blank… family, friends, work, or church!) let the breeze of the Spirit keep “blowing through the jasmine in your mind.”*

This month’s edition is a special Summer Vacation issue with little pointers on how to keep fresh with God. Graham Kivell’s “Make it Meaningful” reminds us that our worship when personal and heartfelt begets a deeper intimacy with God. My own article on “Songs in the Key of Life” invites us to talk to God whatever season of the soul we find ourselves in, because there really are good times, bad times, and mainly in-between times.

There’s some great ministry reminders that Spirit’s summer breeze keeps blowing right here at Calvary, even in July and August. Aside from that we have some great games for the kids, including a “Jellybean Contest” and a special summer “Spiritual Survival Kit” for the adults!

It’s summer. Let the Summer Breeze restore you!

Meals in Motion

Do you know someone who has welcomed a new baby into the family, who is seriously ill or recovering from surgery, or is grieving the loss of a loved one?

For the past seven years, Meals in Motion, a care ministry at Calvary Assembly, has been lending a temporary, but practical helping hand to families with urgent care needs.

“Our teams of volunteer cooks prepare and deliver a few home-cooked meals to help lighten the load families are experiencing,” says Amanda Hyjek, who serves as program coordinator.

She adds, “Families often comment how much of a blessing it is to receive a meal or two while they are recovering or adjusting to the new normal of parenthood. Our team members are equally blessed to touch someone else’s life in their time of need.”

It takes about 35 volunteers, including five teams of cooks who are responsible for preparing meals one week each month, to make the ministry happen.

Hyjek is quick to point out that although a team member is “on call” for one week each month, the reality is a person is only called into action four to five times a year making this a do-able volunteer commitment.

“You don’t have to be a master chef to be involved, just a person who knows how much it means to have a practical helping hand in a period of strain or stress, and a desire to reach out and share love in the form of a dinner,” she says.

“Our team members are equally blessed to touch someone else’s life in their time of need.”

To get involved with Meals in Motion, contact Pastor Tim Hyjek at [email protected].

What is it that makes a song ‘work’? Kids on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand used to grade just-released tunes, saying about their favourites, “It’s got a beat and you can dance to it.” Is it just about rhythm and a hook? Or does it have to do with lyrics and performance?

Some songs tell a story, others just carry a torch. Some tunes are technically perfect, and others musically compelling. But I contend it’s all about the key signature, and I don’t mean pitch.

All the best songs are written in the key of life. And the most enduring performances are the ones deliver reality most poignantly. What makes the blues so powerful is that unique ability to excavate the soul and reveal the deep-down stuff of the human heart. From Beethoven to Beatles, it’s what all great music is about.

The Bible contains an entire book devoted to songs in the key of life. It’s called the Book of Psalms, and it’s often dubbed Israel’s hymn book. But the Book of Psalms is so much more than that. It’s a veritable iTunes store, a mesmerizing assortment of styles, moods and attitudes. The catalogue is as fascinating as the life circumstances that created it.

From the humiliation of an adulterer caught in the shame of his betrayal (Ps. 51) to the coaxing of a virgin bride on the eve of her nuptials (Ps. 45), the Book of Psalms has it all. There are heroes and villains, good times and bad times. It’s a book filled with joy and fear, anger and kindness, frustration and patience, life and death.

When you’re exhilarated with the passion of life, you’ll find a song to sing here (Ps. 150). If you’ve drunk the dregs of human existence and you want no more, that tune is in the songbook too (Psalm 88). And what’s best, the psalms connect this kaleidoscope of experiences to our encounter with the God who created it all.

Most scholars agree that there are three basic types of psalms, and they fit on a scale. At the top end there’s

praise. These are songs that overflow with adoration of the Lord because the singer is taken up with his perfections (Ps. 100). At the other end of the scale there are psalms of lament. It’s the blues, Hebrew-style, when the bottom falls out of life and you’re wondering where this so-called God is (Ps. 88). In the

middle are psalms of thanksgiving. Like the laments they recall the anguish of life on Planet Hollywood, but unlike those blue psalms, these songs reflect the gratitude of a heart that has seen God come through (Ps. 116).

That’s what makes these songs platinum-sellers. They cover the entire range of human experience, and one way or another… God is there! Sometimes he’s the hero, and frankly, sometimes he seems like the villain, but whatever the mood, there he is. It’s a collection of love songs and ballads; blues and anthems; and often just enough jazz for God’s Spirit to fit in between the notes and around the syncopated beat.

This summer Calvary will be examining these ancient “songs in the key of life” to see how they intersect with our lives in the twenty-first century. We’ll discover

the wild variety of seasons God meets us in, and the multihued pallet he invites us to paint with as we grope to find a way to express ourselves to God and others.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven! Ecclesiastes. 3:1

Three years ago missionaries Aaron and Katya Pilon weathered a change of seasons in their ministry life.

After 12 years in Kyrgyzstan, the Pilons moved their ministry to Kiev, Ukraine. Aaron’s focus also shifted from church planting to ministering to university students. However, the couple continues to support the churches planted in any way they can in Kyrgyzstan.

Aaron’s passion for seeing individuals grow in Christ is evident in his most recent prayer request in which he asks for prayer for the young gentlemen he is mentoring.

On Sunday, Aug. 12 we invite you to come prepared to hear more about the Pilons ministry as Aaron

shares with Calvary’s church family his passion for missions and the people in eastern Europe. He will also bring news from his family and the Ukraine.

Please pray for Aaron and his family as they continue to build relationships with Canadian churches

throughout the summer. You can also connect with Aaron on Facebook. Let’s bless Aaron for his commitment to others on our behalf! Remember, your support helps Aaron to keep on ‘doing justice’ in eastern Europe.

A Season of Justice

Backpacks for BookwormsHelp reach our community this summer through Backpacks for Bookworms. Our church has partnered with the Cambridge Food Bank to help nearly 1,000 less fortunate families to adequately prepare their children for school this fall.

How you can help: Donate backpacks for youth and supplies like scientific calculators, as well as other basic school supplies for primary-aged children.

Distribution will take place at Calvary on Aug. 24 so there is lots of time to plan ahead to help a student in need. We would love to see donations come in every Sunday from now until the week of distribution. So come on Calvary, let’s do it!

Check out the growing list of local and global news/information at calvarycambridge.com/justice. This webpage is regularly updated so check back often.

By Graham Kivell

In today’s church some have said we should sing new songs to be relevant to today’s people – a little more trendy or real in our worship.

I think we need to look closer at the undercoat of these statements. The psalmist says to “Sing to the Lord a new song...” We are often looking for the latest album or greatest song to fully encapsulate all that we desire to sing to God. We want music that echoes how we feel, similar to buying that perfectly worded Hallmark card for that special someone.

It wasn’t until my second year of university I started to become frustrated with songs that didn’t say exactly how I felt towards God. It was almost as if I wanted God to be described within my life experience and context for that specific moment. I wanted that Hallmark moment so I began writing.

If someone read now what I wrote then they would have thought I was writing cheesy pick up lines or tacky “humorous” poems to God. But there were also songs that would spill out of me in the middle of the night that made me hungry for more time with God. I began to record everything, thinking this might be the next church anthem.

However, God had different ideas for those songs. They were songs to carry me to a greater understanding of His love for me. As I began to sing these songs it was like God was welcoming me into His greatest and finest dining room to feast on the greatest foods ever! It had nothing to do with the craft of writing, but more about the heartfelt love I had for Jesus and what He has done.

Days would go by and if I was paid a penny for every minute I played my keyboard I could have paid for the keyboard two times over in a week. Today, I see the amazing value of spending time with God and having an overflow of worship in my private time, expressing songs that come right from my heart to His.

My hope is that all would find time to sing a new song before God! Sing in the car on your way to work, in the shower, or in your garage! Sing the new song before God as it will be the very thing that lifts God beyond the place of your present need!

Make time and a place for God to hear your worship and praise. Be the writer of your own song and expression. May your songs be inspired by God›s active power in your life and sing them out like no one is around!

Calvary gets ready to host annual Soap Box Derby

Kids, it’s time to rev your engines.

This August, nearly 100 racers will take part in the ninth annual Soap Box Derby held at Calvary Assembly.

The event – a day of racing, food and being together – will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the church parking lot. Lunch will be provided for participants and there are many prizes to be won. For non-racers, a carnival will be set up onsite.

Calvary’s annual Soap Box Derby was the creative idea of churchgoer Billy Moore who wanted to engage young people in Cambridge.

“I wanted to create an event that would give young people a safe place to have fun instead of falling into the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol. I also wanted an event where kids from our community could connect to something better, God’s love,” says Moore who not only has a caring heart but also a passion for cars.

Moore then approached Calvary’s leadership team about his idea and in the sum-mer of 2003 four cars were built for the first-ever Soap Box Derby held at the church. Ever since, Moore, along with many dedicated volunteers, continues to spearhead the Soap Box Derby effort year-after-year.

“God has granted such favour with our community. Each year we have seen hundreds of people come out and enjoy a day of racing, socializing and eating food,” says Children’s Pastor Paul Williams, adding that true to the vision there has never been a charge for this event.

“Many local businesses have partnered with Calvary and have generously donated prizes that have blessed so many kids who have participated.”

Racers must be at least six years of age, or going into Grade 1. All racers must bring their own bike helmet, however, derby cars are provided. Space is limited so racers are encouraged to register for the derby no later than Aug. 5.

For more information, visit calvarycambridge.com/soapbox or email Pastor Paul Williams at [email protected].

Calvary Library has more than 3,800 books, DVDs, videos, and CDs for borrowing. Materials can be signed out for three weeks. There is a limit of two DVDs or CDs per patron number. An overdue list is available in the library.

Summer jellybean contest for kids!

Hey kids! Would you like a chance to win a big jar of coloured jellybeans? Here’s how: Between July 8 and 29 stop by the library with your mom or dad, sign out a book, DVD, video or CD and submit your guess of how many jellybeans are in the jar. One guess per child (ages three to 17). The child with the closest guess to the actual number of jellybeans, without going over, will be announced as the winner on or about July 30. If two people write down the same guess, the child who wrote the guess down first will be chosen as the winner.

she says... he says...

1. When did you become a follower of Christ? M. I was five or six. E. At the age of 12 under the ministry of a blind preacher at a crusade back home.

2. Were you named after anyone? M. Nope, my parents just liked the name. E. According to my mom, a famous soccer player from back in the day.

3. When was the last time you cried? M. Probably the last time I laughed. I think I have weak tear ducts. I’m always the first one crying in a group full of laughter. E. Oh, I cry all the time, but the last time I had a really good cry was when my dear mother-in-law passed away.

4. Do you like your handwriting? M. Sometimes. E. Definitely not! I’m a lefty.

5. What is your favourite lunchmeat? M. Bacon. E. Ooh, that’s a tough one! But I’d have to say it’s a toss up between Piller’s smoked turkey breast and chicken breast.

6. Do you have kids? M. Nope, but I have a fiancé. They’re pretty much the same thing, aren’t they? E. Yes; one lovely daughter.

7. If you were another person, would you be friends with you? M. Sure, why not? E. Certainly, I think I’d be a good friend to have.

8. Do you use sarcasm a lot? M. If you know my mom then the answer will be obvious to you. E. Actually no. I was never really good at getting it, so why use it?

9. Do you still have your tonsils? M. Sure do! And wisdom teeth to boot. E. Yes… I think so

10. Would you bungee jump? M. No, skydiving would be more likely. I’m not sure why I’d do one over the other when you’re both plunging to your death. E. Oh goodness, absolutely not! (A coward man, keeps sound bones)

11. What is your favourite cereal? M. Right now I’m going through a Mini Wheats phase. E. Well that’s easy… Corn Flakes!

12. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? M. Never. Unless for some reason they’re too tight to slip off my feet E. Yes, always.

13. Do you think you are strong? M. Strong-willed, absolutely! E. For my size, yes.

14. What is your favourite ice cream? M. Reese Peanut Butter Cup with Oreo blizzard from Dairy Queen. Mmmmm. E. Umm, I don’t really know. Whatever my wife is in the mood for that day. Consult with her about that one.

15. What is the first thing you notice about people? M. Their sincerity. I can read people like a book, so I’m told. E. I’d have to say, their demeanour; it says a lot about their personality.

16. Red or pink? M. Red. I made the mistake of painting my room a glossy pink once and it ruined that colour for me. E. Red, but I prefer blue.

17. What is the least favourite thing about yourself? M. Probably my height. I can’t wear a nice pair of heels without towering over people. E. Having a beard, it’s too much work!

18. Who do you miss the most? M. Many people, I don’t think I could rank them on who I miss the most. E. I’d have to say my grandmother, or Granny, as I used to call her; She spoiled me a lot.

19. What colour shoes are you wearing? M. Shoes? Those are forbidden in the summer months. E. As I look down at my slippers…

20. Something most people don’t know about you M. Cream of corn makes me gag. E. I love to talk to people, but deep down, I am a very shy person!

21. Last words M. Proverbs 3:5-6. Look it up and spend some time in the Word. E. I would like to make a positive impact on every person I meet each and every day of my life, with a word, handshake or smile!

Ladies Bible Study Starting Monday, Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Prayer Room. God searches for a heart fully His: Neither Solomon, his son Rehoboam, or his son Abijam followed God fully. Nor did Jeroboam in Israel. Their hearts were divided. Would God ever find anyone to serve Him like David? Would he ever find one whose heart was fully his? God says we are to love Him with all of our heart. Is that really possible? This course has the answer. Contact Kim Trempe at 519.220.0483 or [email protected] or Veda Newell at 519.621.6310 or [email protected].

Secret Sister Join us for dessert and tea on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. This meeting will also be an opportunity to fill out the Secret Sister form and pick a new Secret Sister. This ladies get together allows women to secretly pick out a name of someone else at the meeting and throughout the year buy gifts for them on special occasions, send a card saying they are praying for them, or do something special for them. As a Secret Sister instead of writing down your own name you would sign it from your Secret Sister. For more information, contact Donna McGaghey at 519.650.1533 or [email protected] or Tammy Donahue at 519.651.1718 or [email protected].
