By: Jude Edmon Anthony “Jutz” M. Ola, MBAMarch 7, 2008. The 2008 Inter-HMOBasketball League formally opened atthe Brgy. Kapitolyo Ampi-theater at Sta.Rosa St. near East Capitol Drive,Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig City. Thisis the first time that the league had anopening ceremony and the newbieMedServ generously sponsored theevent. Our newcolleagues in the industrythus made this year’sleague extra special byushering in for the firsttime the Team Parademaking way for the Bestin Uniform and the Bestin Muse award.

The opening programwas hosted by Mr.Renault Manto ofMedServ and our veryown Ms. Jinky Recto. Theprogram started with anopening prayer led by aplayer from Caritas. Thencame the parade ofteams and theirrespective muse/s. Yes!Some teams came withtwo muses! Well,IntelliCare needed onlyone muse and the beautythat graced our team forthat day is Ms. Jeremiah“Jhem” Detras fromClaims Department. Themuses were called up onstage for the judging andselection of winner. Itwas indeed a splendiddisplay of sportsmanshipand beauty! Now whosays we HMOs can’t havefun?! In choosing thewinner, and indeed it wasunique yet fair, the TeamCaptains voted on whothey thought have the bestuniform and mostbeautiful muse. Ofcourse that is aside fromtheir own! While they were deciding, the playersrecited the oath of sportsmanship ledby our special guest from the PhilippineBasketball Association(PBA), Mr.Jeffrey Cariaso of the Alaska Aces.Upon tabulation of the votes, I-Carebagged the best in uniform award. Notsurprisingly, they really have a cooluniform. The muses are quite differentthough. I’d personally want them all to

win. They all looked nice and somewere really really pretty! But only onehas to win and Ms. Miki Hann ofPhilamCare bagged the crown. Theceremonies ended with the drawingof the teams who will play in the firsttwo games. Being the host, MedServis automatically entitled to the first slot

for the first game. Their opponent wasValucare. For the second game ourteam was drawn and our opponentwas MediCard.

The opening games really proved tobe excit ing. Valucare won overMedServ by only three points at 68-65.The second game proved moreexciting though showcasing what

seemed like a preview for the finals! Our team won by five points againstMediCard at 77-72. Our 2008Basketball Team is composed of TeamCaptain Roland “Amang” Villamayor ofClaims Department, Lonaldo “Lord”Trinidad of Accounting, Rolando“Richie” San Juan Jr. of Account

Management, Gian Carlo “Palos”Pacia, Harrold Ancheta and Jojo“Cobra” Romero of TPA – Bil l ing,Michael Angelo “Horhe” Marcos ofCredit & Collection, Julius De Vera fromthe Call Center, Lionel “Nhel” Castroof FPAD, PRO’s Gilbert “Bong”Mendoza and Melencio “J.-Lo”Salugsugan Jr. and from StrategicManagement Department Adonis

“Dickies” Suarez, Alfredo Raul “ElKabayo” Villamar and Marvin Rick“Kamandag” Uy. Aside from theplayers, we have of course thecoaching staff. Coach Edwin Medinaof Accounting, Assistant Coach EfrenJuan Vigal of Credit and Collection,Coaching Staff Tito Velasquez of

Of course wehave the Team ManagersMr. Mark Gamir, SeniorManager - Marketing,Mr Arnie Dantis, AVP - MIS,Eric Trinidad, SeniorAssistant Manager - FPADand Team Assistants ReneRodriguez, Dennis “Bullet”Balabala, Joel Caudor andRenante Abuela.

For the second game, wefaced another tough team.We had quite a bruisinggame against our lastyear’s nemesis anddefending championCocolife which we wonalso by five points at 60-55.Since they were the teamthat knocked us out lastyear, it was indeed a greatmorale boost for our teamwhen we were finally ableto get back at them. The lastgame against MedServshowcased theseriousness of this team’sdesire to win back thecrown. Though they arefairly new in the league andare not among the strongcontenders of the crown, our team pounded themrelentlessly until the end. When the smoke of thebattle cleared, the scorewas 77-24. A 53 point winthat surely sent cold chillsup and down the spine of

our competitors, a statement that wemean business! So to our employees, clients and friends; come and watchour team compete. these achievements should have beenpossible without the able assistanceof the younger set of our workingpopulation and their collateralpartners, our loyal clients. Theydeserve our felicitations with the hopethat the relationship remain steadfastfor the rest of the year.

RUVs? Medical terms anddefinitions? Even medical opinions!WHO YA GONNA CALL?!?! Doc Louie! This is how we know the dynamichead of the Medical ClaimsDepartment. Well, handling thatdepartment sure is a monumentaltask but the doctor takes it in stride. Itake great pride and honor for theopportunity to interview one of my mostadmired personalities in the company. Here now is a quick peek into the lifeof the busy head of Medical Claims –Dr. Louie Agregado, known to all of usas “Doc Louie”.

JO: Where and when did yougraduate?

Doc Louie: I took my pre-med courseat the Ateneo de Manila and graduatedwith a degree in AB Pyschology in1983. I had to augment my sciencesubjects and cross-enroll to satisfythe requirements for admission in amed school. For a while I evenconsidered taking masters inPyschology but eventually just got afew units and finally decided to pursuea medical degree. After 1 ½ years, Idecided to go to Med school at theFEU-NRMF and graduated in 1989.

JO: What made you decide to pursuemedical studies? Was it always yourdream to become a doctor?

Doc Louie: My mom was myinspiration which led me to pursue amedical degree. She was a verysuccessful pediatr ician and aHospital Administrator. Seeing hersuccess made me consider taking amedical degree rather than a Lawdegree.

As far as my dream of becoming adoctor, yes I guess so. I grew up in ahospital setting so to speak. Everyafternoon during my grade schooldays, I would wait for my mom at thehospital after dismissal time. Thehospital where my mom was apediatr ician and the hospitaladministrator turned out to be myplayground!!!!

JO: When did you join IntelliCare?

Doc Louie: I first joined IntelliCare in1999 as a Company doctor assignedto a Bank Client. I held on to that bankand had additional assignments forthe next 3 or 4 years. During that time, since I was very visible here at theoff ice, people started to ask mequestions pertaining to medicalcoverage, various illnesses etc. untilMr. Rommel Ancheta f inal lyrecommended that I also act as anIn-house Medical Consultant. Afterthat, the rest is history.

JO: What encouraged you to take onthe HMO instead of the typical clinic/hospital doctor?

Doc Louie: Again I guess it’s theinfluence of my mom. She was asuccessful practi t ioner but moreimportantly, she was also a MedicalDirector of 2 major children’s hospitals

Typhoid and paratyphoidenteric fevers

Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers areinfections caused by bacteria whichare transmitted from faeces toingestion. Clean water, hygiene andgood sanitation prevent the spreadof typhoid and paratyphoid.Contaminated water is one of thepathways of transmission of thedisease.

The disease and how itaffects peopleTyphoid fever is a bacterial infectionof the intestinal tract andbloodstream. Symptoms can be mildor severe and include sustained feveras high as 39°-40° C, malaise, anorexia, headache, constipation ordiarrhoea, rose-coloured spots onthe chest area and enlarged spleenand liver. Most people showsymptoms 1-3 weeks after exposure.Paratyphoid fever has similarsymptoms to typhoid fever but isgenerally a milder disease.

here in Manila. Seeing her managehospitals and not just patients mademe realize that an administrative jobis meant for me. For one, I think, I amgood at handling people. But you don’thave to take my word for that. Maybeyou need that assumption validated!!!Actually, even when I was a resortdoctor decades ago and not a doctorof last resort (laughter)!!!! , I was evenasked to be the OIC of that resort forseveral days.

JO: What are the advantages anddisadvantages of working in theHMO office versus working in ahospital?

Doc Louie: I ’d rather not sayadvantages and disadvantages, butrather I get to manage my time moreeffectively working in an HMO settingthan purely in medical practice.

JO: What is an ordinary day forDr. Agregado at the office?

Doc Louie: Ordinarily, I’d sit on mytable with a stack of documents to bereviewed and signed. Then, people

problem of unsafe drinking-water,inadequate sewage disposal andflooding.

Scope of the ProblemThe annual incidence of typhoid isestimated to be about 17 millioncases worldwide.

InterventionsPublic health interventions toprevent typhoid and paratyphoidinclude:

• health education about personalhygiene, especially regarding hand-washing after toilet use and beforefood preparation; provision of a safewater supply;• proper sanitation systems;• excluding disease carriers fromfood handling.

would start pouring into my work placeasking for medical opinion, definition ofterms etc. I also would pace myself inattending various meetings with ourhealthcare providers, medical directorsand/or hospital administrators. I am alsoinvited by hospitals etc. to attend socialsrepresenting IntelliCare.

JO: How is your relationship with otherdepartments?

Doc Louie: Strenuous!!! (Laughter)…..Basically I interact with the MembershipServices Department, Patient RelationsOfficers and the Reimbursement Sectionall under the leadership of Ms. PenSabuga. Of course there’s the AccountManagement Department headed by Mr.Jun Roxas and Mr. Mario Oca. And ofcourse, my favorite the Medical Relationsheaded by our Medical Director Dr.Ricardo L. Jocson and Mr. Edmund Jose.

Well I guess I have fully adjusted to meetand face the various challenges theyhave to offer. Of course many concernsare elevated to me but we all worktogether to find the most appropriatesolutions. Everything is accomplisheddue to a concerted effort of a well oiledteam, so to speak.

JO: Handling the Medical Claimsand the Verifiers sure is stressful. How do you deal with the pressure? How do you loosen up?

Doc Louie : I agree, i t is qui testressful, but knowing my group’scapacity and the camaraderie thatwe have developed, makes me feelcomplacent that nothing isimpossible. Time and again, I hadto talk to the group and our teamleaders and every t ime, theyassured me of 100% loyalty anddedication. And up to this day, I haveno reason to doubt theircompetence, their working attitudeand their team spirit. They all haverisen to the challenges and havematured as I have matured handlingthem.

I’d rather not answer how I loosenup….. (Laughter)….

Obesity, the scourge of a society that loves to eat unhealthy foods, is now agrowing health concern in the Philippines. What we thought of as a problemonly of “high-income” countries like the United States is now a growingconcern in our country as well. In the 2003 survey of the Food & NutritionResearch Institute of the Department of Science & Technology, the numberof obese people in our country is now 4.3% of the population or approximately3.4M Filipinos. Spend some time in a mall in Metro Manila and you willdefinitely see a number of obese individuals. While this number falls waybelow the figures in most Western countries, it is enough to cause concernfor health care providers.

What is the big fuss about obesity? It has clearly been established thatsimply being overweight & more so being obese, carries with it a high risk fordeveloping serious medical conditions such as hypertension & heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, arthritic conditions, certain cancers & many other co-morbidities. While the majority of obeseindividuals may be treated with a combination of a proper diet, exercise, ahealthy lifestyle change & medications, there remains a group of them thatcan only be adequately treated with surgery. These are the so-called morbidlyobese individuals who have a body mass index (BMI = wt in kgs/height inmeters squared) greater than or equal to 40. Among Filipinos & other Asians, surgery is recommended even if the individual’s BMI is 35. Surgery for themorbidly obese, known as bariatric surgery, is now being done in thePhilippines.

There are 3 basic types of bariatric or weight loss surgeries – malabsorptive, restrictive or a combination of the two. The restrictive type, exemplified bythe laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure or LAGB is now themost popular procedure for the morbidly obese world-wide supplanting thegastric bypass. One reason is the relative ease in doing the LAGB comparedwith the gastric bypass, but more importantly, it is the safer procedure, meaning less morbidities & mortalities. In the LAGB, a silicone band iswrapped around the upper part of the stomach. (see illustration below)

STEP 3: Locking of the band STEP 4: Subcutaneousneumatic pump for air insuf-flation and deflation to con-trol the size of the encircledgastric lumen

This band is adjustable and results in a restriction to the downward part ofthe stomach. This band is adjustable and results in a restriction to thedownward passage of food. Because of this restriction, patients may only be

able to eat small volumes of food lest they develop pain & vomiting. Weightloss is gradual, at around 1-2 lbs a week but over time an average of about57% of the excess weight is lost & the associated medical problems such asdiabetes may even disappear. However, to ensure success of the procedure, the requirement is that the operation be done as a team approach by properlytrained laparoscopic surgeons.

In Metro Manila, a group of 5 surgeons (Miguel Mendoza, Jose Antonio Salud,Ferdinand Samonte, Rey Melchor Santos & Kim Shi Tan) formed the PhilippineObesity Control Surgery Team (POCST) whose main objective is to providesafe & effective weight loss surgery to the morbidly obese. Since 2004, thegroup has performed over a hundred LAGB procedures primarily at De LosSantos Medical Center, The Medical City, Asian Hospital & Medical Center,Metropolitan Hospital & FEU Hospital. We have done surgeries also at WorldCiti Medical Center & at the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Hospital in SanFernando, Pampanga. We have also been invited to do surgeries on patientsat the Makati Medical Center & at the Cabrini Medical Center in Sto. Tomas,Batangas. The five members of the POCST may be contacted at their respectivehospitals below:

Miguel Mendoza – Asian Hospital & Medical CenterJose Antonio Salud – The Medical CityFerdinand Samonte – De Los Santos Medical CenterRey Melchor Santos – FEU HospitalKim Shi Tan – Metropolitan Hospital

Furthermore, we invite you to visit our website at www.philocst.org for a morecomprehensive understanding of the treatment of morbidly obese patients.

The Person Withinby: Dra. Rita Angela S. Gatuslao

Since its inception in 1996, IntelliCare has carefully selectedits front liners ... We look for people who feel that giving serviceis more than just a job, that attending to every client, infirmedor otherwise, is something that resonates within their hearts,as a calling or a vocation.

It is CARING.. .. . . enough to provide meaningful service to humanity,. . . enough to uplift man’s spirit and dignity,. . . enough to make a difference.

In this vein, the Western Visayas Regional Office(Bacolod), has been striving to continually improve this qualityof care for our members. The thrust was how to bring the sacredto CARING. If a front liner can bring spiritual consciousness, ina form that feels right for them, to the forefront of their day today contact with members and clients they are working with, the essence of their work will shift to a higher level of relating.

So began the informal program in early 2002.WVRO - Bacolod was then still growing, still a learner, still withpotential, still in pursuit of success, and whose existencecontinued to have within it a promise for independence. Theprogram began with the occasionally scheduled short lecturesfrom resource speakers, and eventually evolved to the moreinteractive teach-ins and group sharing circle.

It was found that the sacred in caring invites one to godeeply inward or to feel connected to something greater thanthe surface of their everyday dealings - acknowledging: andhonoring the constancy of change and transition. The frontliners then can transcend the daily grind of routine andhardships of serving when they hold a sacred vision of the taskthey perform.

When front liners recognize that simple daily routinescan become sacred events for those who are cared for orattended to, they will have brought the divine into their caring.A greeting, a smile, a hand - the smallest gesture imbued withspiritual consciousness can uplift both the giver and the personbeing cared for. It creates a time - a space - of connectedness.

Today, we continue to honor and promote the values ofcaring, integrity, and public service. This ensures that behindall our endeavors - past, present and future - is the centralconcept that one person can make a difference regardless ofthe degree of difficulty of a task or the obstacles encountered, aided by innovation and flexibility, and supported by theIntelliCare family.

Looking closer, we see.. .. . . not the frantic dependent, but the small child with a fatherand mother,. . . not the care-free dependent, but the young girl of sixteenwith wings on her feet,. . . not the anxious bank employee, but the bride soon topromise vows to keep,. . . not the demanding branch head, but a protective father atthirty,. . . not the confident executive, but the spouse mourning aloss,. . . not the sensitive dependent, but the grandparent wrinkledwith the wisdom of time

We at IntelliCare, more than just serve,we CARE...for family.

Account Management TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves Moreby: Chrissie Garcia and Gian Carlo Riosa

They are described as the drumbeaters of IntelliCare. They are thehappy, smil ing and sometimesstressed faces of IntelliCare. They arewell-known by both the clients ofIntel l iCare and by the di f ferentdepartments within IntelliCare.

The people of IntelliCare’s AccountManagement are often seen flittingabout. When they’re not off orientingan account or meeting a client toaddress concerns, they’re seenrunning from department todepartment to coordinate a clientrequest, or at their desks answeringemail inquiries and phone calls.

Amidst the dizzying pace of AccountManagement, they manage toservice the healthcare concerns ofdifferent IntelliCare members andmeet their targets. But what exactlydoes the job of Account Managemententail?

Account Officers build partnershipsand relationships with IntelliCare’scl ients. They act as faci l i tators, consultants on healthcare and thecomprehensive wellness of theiraccounts and its employees. AccountOfficers, or AOs as they are called, can be counted on to keep clientsupdated with feedback on other

health-related programs based onstatistics, external environs and newmedical t rends. Indeed, AccountManagement serves as the IntelliCarerepresentative to clients.

But a little-known fact is that AccountOff icers also serve as cl ientrepresentat ives internal ly, to thedepartments within IntelliCare. Tocl ients, Account Off icers AREIntellicare; clients no longer have toworry about dealing with too manypeople for different concerns andrequests such as bi l l ing andissuance of cards, because all thesemay be addressed to and by the

Account Officers in a timely manner.AOs are the cl ients’ l inks to thedifferent departments of Intellicare.Account Officers make sure thatthings are running smoothly, and thatthe healthcare program ascommitted to clients is implemented.

Another l i t t le-known fact aboutAccount Management is that thereare five (5) subgroups under AccountManagement: Account Servicing,Account Orientation , In-HouseSupport, Annual Physical Exam(APE) Coordination, and SupportTeam , each with their ownresponsibilities and scope of work.

When the different Team Leaders were asked about their teams, these are what they hadto say about their teammates and what they would be called

if they had a team name

Page 10: NETWORK EXPANSIONS

10 IntelliCare Newsletter

While Account Servicing is made upof the Account Officers and theirTeam Leaders, Account Orientation’sTraining Officers and In-HouseSupport Assistants are headed byits Team Leader and Senior AccountOfficer, Monica Silos. The main dutiesof th is team are schedul ingorientation requests coming frombrokers, business developmentofficers and clients; conducting theseor ientat ions and prepar ing theneeded mater ia ls such aspowerpoint presentations and benefitflyers. Their work may seem simple, but having to walk the busy streets ofMakati, or hopping on a plane, orspending hours on other modes oftransportation are included in theirjob description. They speak in frontof crowds ranging from 2 to 200people, as ear ly as 1:00 in themorning or as late as 12:00 midnight.I t ’s a job that is somet imesoverlooked, but without IntelliCare’sTrain ing Off icers, most of themembers would be in the dark whenit comes to their healthcare benefits.

The In-House Team serves assupport to the Account Officers. Theyare a relatively new team establishedthis January 2008, but plans for anIn-House Team were made as earlyas August 2007. In one short quarter, this team has made their presencefel t . There are fewer delays infeedback, and there has been bettermanagement of accounts. Clientsmay also contact the In-House Teamshould their assigned AccountOfficers be in the field.

The Annual Physical ExamCoordinators are headed by SeniorAccount Officer Jasmin Arango. Theyare in charge of all concerns withregard to scheduling of the AnnualPhysical Exams andPre-Employment Exams. Theyreceive as many as 50-80 requests aday, which they are all able to addressimmediately.

The Support Team, with its grouphead Tito Velasquez is in charge ofthe scheduling of transportations forc l ient cal ls , or ientat ions andmeetings. They make sure that theybr ing the Account Off icers andTrainors to their assigneddestinations safely and on time.

Now that we know what AccountManagement is, the next questionwould be who are the leaders thatoversee Account Management?

The Account ManagementDepartment is headed by Mr. JeremyMatti, Vice President for Sales andMarketing . Leading the team inservicing clients are Mr. Fortunato“Jun” Roxas Jr. and Mr. Marito“Mario” Oca Jr., Senior Manager andManager respectively. Guiding theAccount Officers are the veterans ofAMD: Assistant Manager Richie SanJuan, together with Team Leadersand Senior Account Officers Angeldela Cruz, Maida Salugsugan, RyanPeduca and Rochelle Tiqui.

Account Officers are divided into fourteams, with three or four AOs underone Team Leader. When asked, theysay, being part of a team is beneficialto the to them and to the accounts aswell. The combined experience andknowledge of team members is an

advantage, and members of the teamassist their fe l low teammate’saccounts if the latter is in the field.“Teamwork is always better thanworking alone,” says Maida. “Fiveheads are better than one,” addsRochelle.

Once you pass by the AccountManagement Department, anticipatehearing cheery voices. May it be onaccommodating cl ient queries ormerely talking with fellow IntelliCareemployees. You could also expectoccasional laughter from comicalstories teammates share. It is one of

their ways of having a break from theirgrueling workloads and fuels themfor more client satisfying service. Mr.Roxas describes them as a kalogbunch, a generally jolly and friendlygroup.

Despite their jolly nature, this groupis serious about meeting their targets. They aim to renew all their accounts, and account renewals is one of thegreatest achievements of thedepartment, along with establishingfr iendships and developingrelationships with the clients. At theend of the day, when the members

are healthy and are pleased withIntelliCare ’s service, then AccountManagement has done its job.

“But we will not rest on our laurels,”says Mr. Roxas. He says that bothclients and IntelliCare can expect thatAccount Management will continue tobe the drumbeaters, and that the beatof the drum wil l be faster in thecoming year. “Of course, we can’t doit without the other departments,” headds. “If we are the face of IntelliCare, then they are the body. We all worktogether to provide quality service toall our members.”
