    Expert Analyzer

No matter what your traffic level is, Network Analyzer transorms data into mean-ingul diagnostic inormation, constantly monitoring the traffic on your network.Te Expert Analyzer reduces thousands o rames to a handul o significant events. It watches continuously or router misconfigurations, slow file transers, inefficientwindow sizes, connection resets, and many other problems. It does this or eachprotocol stack you have running (including IPv6); all in real time as events actuallyoccur.

Alert events indicate a serious network problem, such as zero time to live in IP.

Warning events highlight a configuration or perormance problem in the network, such as connection reused in Oracle, then list all possible reasons or the reusal.

Normal events give inormation on normal network transactions, such as OSPFrouter identified and provide statistics on the IP and MAC addresses as well as thenumber o OSPF routers identified.

An additional drill-down capability enables you to ocus on the data, discover thesource o the problem and find a recommended solution.

    Data Filtering

Te J6801B DNA, J6802B DNA MX, J6803B DNA PRO, and J6872A 10 Gigabit/Gigabit Ethernet Blade Interace support two types o data filtering to assist introubleshooting and analyzing the large quantities o data generated on a high-speed link: capture and display filters. Hardware-based capture filters allow theuser to speciy which data the instrument should store in the capture buffer or ana-lyze in real-time. Sofware-based display filters let the user speciy which capturedrames should be shown on the display.

Te acquisition system used in the J6801B DNA, J6802B DNA MX, J6803B DNAPRO and J6872A 10 Gigabit/Gigabit Ethernet Blade Interace allows 100% o alldata via any interace to be captured (ull-duplex), regardless o the link speed, link utilization, or errors; the specialized hardware will catch everything. Ofen, the data o interest occurs rarely; even large capture buffers can fill quickly, par-ticularly rom higher rate interaces. Te data acquisition system has sophisticatedhardware capture filters so that capture memory is used with maximum efficiency, avoiding the capture o vast amounts o data o no interest. Tese capture filtersconsist o 32 simultaneous hardware protocol filters (each 256 bytes wide) andare in addition to hardware filters in the LIMs that can also filter traffic by AMVPI.VCI labels. Tese capture filters operate on all data entering the acquisitionsystem, whether or not the data is to be captured or analyzed in real-time. Onemeasurement that operates on data beore capture filtering is the Protocol Vitalsmeasurement.

Any number o hardware filters may be active at the same time; multiple activefilters are logically ORed. Network Analyzer allows you to set up filters by rameattributes. For example, when filtering LAN traffic, filters can be specified to filterrames with a bad rame check sum (FCS), runts (collisions), jabbers, dribbles, orthe data portion o the packet. When filtering by data, up to 64 bytes may be speci-fied in the data field ollowing the MAC source and destination addresses as filtercriteria or network layer or IP filters.

Multi-segment jitter, latency, and packet loss

Quickly identiy degradation points across a network. Use the IP multi-segmentjitter measurement to detect and report jitter, packet loss and latency across multipleNetwork Analyzer data capture files rom a distinct communication path across anetwork. Tis measurement supports IP, ICMP, CP, UDP and RP networks. Tis isan off-line measurement perormed on multiple capture files.

    Measurements include:

total jitter (min, max, and average) in each direction

network jitter (min, max, and average) in each direction

source jitter (min, max, and average) in each direction

    packet loss in each direction

latency (min, max, and average) in each direction.

    Run-time store to media

Do you need to collect and analyze traffic over extremely long periods or have anintermittent problem that is hard to capture? Te DNA platorm lets you collect andanalyze data over long periods by utilizing unique data streaming capabilities. Inrun-time store to media (RSM) mode, the instruments streams data in run-timethrough external ports or post analysis and troubleshooting.

Te J6801B DNA, J6802B DNA MX and J6803B DNA PRO can stream to media upto 55 Mbps using the Control and Sync port. By utilizing a dedicated gigabit Ethernetport, the J6801B DNA and J6803B DNA PRO can stream up to 150 Mbps.

    Encapsulation discovery

Network Analyzer takes care o handling tunneled or encapsulated LAN traffic.

Sophisticated algorithms discover the encapsulation used on the link under test andwill configure the system or you. Simply type in the IP address or the application youwant to filter on and the sofware will take care o the encapsulation that the networkdevices are using. You can also define a filter based on the discovered encapsulation.GRE and GP tunneling is supported. All measurements and analysis are done at thehighest IP level.

    Protocol commentators

At the heart o Network Analyzer is a series o commentators, which perorm real-time protocol state-ollowing analysis o rames to detect anomalous protocol events.Tese events are logged and linked to the corresponding captured rames, makingit easy or you to scroll through the capture buffer to see the events that led up to ananomalous event and then drill down into the event itsel. Commentators or many

different protocol amilies, including IPv6 and VoIP, are included. One o the most important capabilities o the protocol commentators is the abilityto detect potential problems in the network, and provide a suggestion o what to doto solve the problem, in addition to an explanation o the actual problem and tech-nology behind it. You do not have to be a network expert to detect, understand, andtroubleshoot problematic networks.

    Baselining

Network Analyzer lets you collect statistical inormation over long periods andexport it to the J6848A Report Center sofware to generate management-levelreports. Armed with these reports, you can easily identiy network trends and planor uture network requirements. Te two most important measurements or this ea-ture are the Protocol Vitals and the Connection Statistics measurements.

Te Protocol Vitals measurement is one o the undamental measurements in thesystem.

It gives you a real view o the network, even i capture filters are active.

Te measurement collects a wealth o protocol-specific inormation on various pro-tocols like AM, Ethernet, Frame-Relay, IPv4, IPv6, Apple alk, IPX, OSI etc., plusline status (WAN/AM interaces).

You can select the inormation you want to graph without having to stop or restartthis or any other measurement. Tis selection makes it easy to identiy correlateddata patterns like broadcast rames versus routing packets versus Frame-Relayrame-rate, etc.

Te measurement monitors thresholds that you can easily set dynamically to detectintermittently occurring events automatically and stop the capture process or ur-ther analysis, even i the system is running unattended.

Te Protocol Vitals measurement graphs current and maximum utilization in real-time and provides current, average, peak and cumulative values in tabular ormat othe ollowing parameters:

    ATM policing

Te policing measurement operates in real-time with all AM-capable LIMs upto 622 Mbps, including IMA and AM channelized sub-rates o the J6810B SDH/SONE LIM. In all cases, policing is perormed on up to 1024 virtual circuits simul-taneously. Virtual circuits are auto discovered and the measurement is perormed inhardware prior to hardware-based AAL-2/AAL-5 reassembly, so it works in cell modeor rame mode. It can be used simultaneously in real-time with other measurementssuch as the VPI.VCI statistics and, in rame mode, with higher layer analysis. Temeasurement can also be used to post-process data rom the capture buffer or romfile (cell mode only).

The following traffic service configurations are supported:

    CBR.1/DBR/UBR.1 GCRA (1/PCR0+1, CDVT0+1), no tagging

    VBR.1/SBR1 GCRA (1/PCR0+1, CDVT0+1)

    ATM Usage Expert

Te network has traffic contracts set up to protect it rom excessive traffic and thedanger o congestion. However, how close is your traffic to the contract limits? Tisuseul measurement is able to derive suitable traffic contracts or actual constant/deterministic bit rate (CBR/DBR) and variable/statistical bit rate (VBR/SBR) trafficby post-processing data rom the capture buffer. Te estimated traffic contracts canbe subsequently applied to live real-time policing analysis on the same virtual circuitin cell mode or rame mode to confirm that this is a suitable traffic contract over thelonger term.

    1-Point CDV graphing

A side effect o the policing measurement is the ability to graph 1-point cell delayvariation (that is, CDV observed at a single point). Te graph is derived rom the datacollected per virtual channel o cell inter-arrival times. For each virtual channel, themeasurement keeps multiple bins o accumulated counts o inter-arrival times that

occur within the ranges covered by these bins. Te graph can be plotted as a distribu-tion o hits against inter-arrival times or hits against cells/second. As a non-intrusivepassive measurement on live traffic, this is particularly useul or observing the behav-ior o CBR/DBR traffic where CDV can impact the quality o service o the emulatedcircuit being carried in the virtual channel. Tis measurement is perormed simulta-neously with other policing measurements and a graph o any policed virtual circuitcan be displayed at any time.
