A computer network, or simply a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels. it is a  telecommunication networks that allows computers to exchange data. In computer networks, networked computing devices pass data to each other along data connections. Data is transferred in the form of packets. The connections between nodes are established using either cable media or wireless media. The best-known computer network is the Internet. Computer Network devices that originate, route and terminate the data are called network nodes . Nodes can include hosts such as personal computers, phones, servers as well as networking hardware. Two such devices are said to be networked together when one device is able to exchange information with the other device, whether or not they have a direct connection to each other. Computer networks support applications such as access to the World Wide Web, shared use of servers, printers, and fax machines, and use of email and instant messaging applications. Today, computer networks are the core of modern communication.

INTRODUCTION

Need For Computer NetworkSome of the uses of computer network are :Resource sharing : Everybody can share the hardware resources like printers , modems instead of using independent separate one.

File sharing : In a work place people using the same data can share it over a network by storing it centrally . It will avoid creating of multiple copies.

Communication : We can send e-mail and message for communication distance does not matter for sending email . It is the most popular method of today .

Cost effectiveness and time saving : By resource sharing and communication over a network saves time because it reaches immediately .

Scheduling activities : Using variety of network scheduling software , it is easy to arrange meetings without constantly checking everyone’s schedules .

Shared internet access : Using a single telephone line , we can connect all the computer to the internet through network.

Data security : Data in network is centrally stored on a main computer called server . So data security needs to be focused on a single machines .

Types Of Computer Network

1) Personal Area Network (PAN)

2) Local Area Network (LAN)

3) Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

4) Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Computer network used for communicating between computer devices close to one person is called personal area network . The reach of pan is typically within about 20 – 30 feet (approx 6 – 9 m )

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A Network covering small geographical area , likehome, office or building is called Local Area Network .The reach of LAN is 5 kms . Speed of communicationis 100 mbps .

Local Area Network (LAN)

-Metropolitan Area Network is a network that connects two or more local area networks together but lies within the boundaries of the immediate town,City or metropolitan area . Special devices like the routers , switches & hubs are connected to create aMAN.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A WAN is a data communications that covers a widegeographical area . It connects one city to another city or one country to another country . WAN use various transmission facilities , such as telephones , radio , satellite . The WAN can cover a range of 1000’s of kms.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Networking Terms Inter-network :

InternetIntranet

When public , private , commercial , industrial , or government Network may be interconnected it is the called an inter-network . The two types are Intranet and Internet

An Intranet is a set of interconnected networks forming the internal network based within a company or an organisation .

The internet is a networks of networks . It may consist of millions of smaller network Worldwide .

Interspace :This is also called as the net of the twenty-first century . Itwould help users to directly solve all their information problems .
