having voice problems a week earlier.” KMPS/Seattle MD Tony Thomas was at Saturday’s show. “Jennifer was 100% strong, on and rockin’,” he says. “No doubts about her voice from what we heard in Seattle. Their set was fantastic. Listeners I spoke with afterwards loved Sugarland’s set. And their cover of Pearl Jam’s “Better Man” was quite effective.”

Report: CC Has Pandora Deal The Katz 360 Digital Sales unit, a division of Clear Channel’s Katz Media Group, will begin selling display and audio advertising on Pandora, according to a story in AdAge.com. Founder Tim Westergren noted, “Over time, as we grow into our shoes, this relationship will naturally evolve.” While some speculate that CC might be seeking to broaden the partnership into content areas, Westergren says the partnership is “really about ad sales, nothing more.” Proving that business is just business, Pandora is asking its tens of millions of subscribers to support the Performance Rights Act, which terrestrial broadcasters vigorously oppose.

Chart Chat Congrats to Darius Rucker, SVP/Promotion Steve Hodges, VP/Promotion Shane Allen and the rest of the Capitol promotion team on this week’s No. 1 with Rucker’s “Alright.” The song is Rucker’s third-consecutive No. 1 from his debut country album Learn To Live, joining “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” and “It Won’t Be Like This For Long.” (Rucker’s latest appears to be a sign he’s trying to cut down on the average word length of his single titles.) And not insignificantly, Capitol has scored three of the last four No. 1 singles on this chart, holding the position for three of the last five weeks. Lady A’s “I Run To You” topped the chart July 13, with Dierks Bentley’s “Sideways” topping out July 6.

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life Colt Ford discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1) Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, UGA Coliseum: This show really made an impact on me. Watching the two legends together was definitely memorable.2) The Commodores, UGA Coliseum: I credit their show with really turning me on to R&B. Everyone in the horn section were great musicians.3) Run-DMC’s self-titled album: They mixed

rap and rock on that album, and were way ahead of their time.4) Elvis: My mom and dad loved “The King,” so we had all of his records growing up. I was just blown away by him from an early age.5) Jamey Johnson, That Lonesome Song: One of the most amazing records I have ever heard. It even makes me write music differently.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: The Beatles. I know I have heard songs, but to be honest, I really couldn’t name a single one.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Led Zeppelin. My wife is a huge fan and she tells me all about what Robert Plant was saying in all their stuff. I just never got it.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Johnson’s That Lonesome Song. I had it months before it came out, and I listen to it every day.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: My 14-year-old daughter let me hear Lady Gaga; her whole album is great.

Air Talent Boot Up (continued from page 1) To that end, Abitron Mgr./Marketing Communications Ron Rodrigues advised, “It’s better for stations not to make a lot of profound changes before going to PPM. Use the two months of pre-currency to evaluate as a baseline to see what’s required, if anything. There are lots of differences from market to market, and make sure that responsibility for PPM is shared with everyone.” He also provided WRC-TV/Washington’s news clock to illustrate how one might place programming in the first seven minutes to help secure a quarter-hour’s credit. “You have 15 minutes to get five; every minute that goes by gives you one less to get that credit. We have research to show a good song can beat a bad bit, but great content can beat a song. It’s a broad brush that PPM loves music … we like to think that PPM loves expectations fulfilled. What does the listener expect to hear?” Lincoln Financial Radio Division President Don Benson noted, “PPM gets you to clean things up. But you’ve got to be careful to the point of being sterile. There are some things that should be trimmed or adjusted, but a totally error-free show can be pretty bland. We look for people willing to take some chances and who are not afraid to make a mistake. What you’re really hiring in good shows are the skill sets of people who can adjust to situations, and not the shows themselves.” Meanwhile, Saga EVP/Group PD Steve Goldstein advised talent to take a tip from country artists in maximizing their visibility in today’s difficult financial times. “We on the sales side have been underplaying the star power for years,” he said. “Clients enjoy time with the talent, and become invested in them. We’re asking people to do a lot more than that. At CRS, country stars know how to work the room beautifully. There’s no equivalent in the rock world. You need to know how to manage the room moving forward; it will make you more valuable.” CBS Radio SVP/Programming Greg Strassell added, “When was the last time you called your top five advertisers to say, ‘Thank you’? That goodwill will go a long way.” Attendees broke for format-specific sessions Friday afternoon. Blair Garner moderated the Country panel, which was ably represented by syndicated personality Moby, KMLE/Phoenix’s

Tim & Willy, WXTU/Philadelphia’s Andie & Kris and the aforementioned Fitz. Garner directed the discussion through topics including finding a voice, show structure, format-specific approaches, the impact of PPM and the use of emerging technologies. Moby noted that developing a rapport with listeners was a process of just “sitting down and wanting to communicate.” Self-confessed aircheck junkie Fitz says the words of an admired personality helped him: “Every time you listen to someone else it takes away from you sounding like yourself.” Andie added, “Country fans can tell if you’re real.” Kris concurred. “You don’t want to be my waitress because I’m going to harass you the same way I do Andie on-air.” In terms of new media like Facebook, Andie said she’s observed that questions that get lots of response online tend to work on the radio. Discussing chemistry in morning teams, Hattrick said he’d once been paired with Glenn Beck, resulting in good shows but off-air screaming matches. “Nobody was a bigger fan of Glenn Beck,” he said, wistfully, “than Glenn Beck.” Conversation about prep services prompted Moby to note, “Anything that happens in your life is show prep.” Several of the personalities noted the need for a code word or signal to indicated that a guest needs to leave the studio. “’Liners’ is the code word,” Fitz said. “Hey, can you do some liners for us?” Moby laughed when telling of running his hands through his hair – his signal – so many times it was like beating himself on the head. Willy urged jocks to take a lesson from country’s artists. “You have to get in the trenches with the people,” he said. “Love your listeners up.” Andie was blunt in her advice: “Live the life,” she said, “because they’ll see right through you. If you’re an a-hole off-air, be an a-hole on-air. They’ll respect you for it.”
