sAfety inforMAtionIn this chapter you will find general instructions for the safe handling of this product.

► Read this safety information thoroughly and follow all the instructions carefully.

In the following chapters, warning signs displayed in color also indicate hazards that are imminent.

Operator qualificationsInstallation and preliminary adjustments may only be performed by qualified service personnel or authorized service dealers.

Warnings and precautions ► Inspect the box the chassis was shipped in and note if it was

damaged in any way. ► If the chassis itself shows damage, file a damage claim with the carrier

that delivered your system. ► Choose a suitable location for the rack unit that will hold the chassis.

It should be situated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated. ► Avoid areas where heat, electrical noise, and electromagnetic fields

are generated. ► Place it near at least one grounded power outlet. ► The configured NPX-4900 chassis includes one power supply. If you

ordered a redundant power supply, two grounded outlets are required.

► The NPX-4900 chassis includes a set of rail assemblies, including the mounting brackets and mounting screws you will need to install the systems into the rack.

► Please read this manual in its entirety before you begin the installation process.

Electrical safety precautionsBasic electrical safety precautions should be followed to protect yourself from harm and the NPX-4900 from damage:

► Be aware of the locations of the power on/off switch on the chassis, as well as the room’s emergency power-off switch, disconnection switch, or electrical outlet. If an electrical accident occurs, you can then quickly deenergize the system.

► Do not work alone when working with high voltage components. ► The system should always be deenergized when removing or

installing main system components, such as the server board, memory modules, hard disk or solid state drives (not necessary for hot swappable drives). When disconnecting power, you should first power down the system with the operating system and then unplug the power cords from all the power supply modules in the system.

► When working around exposed electrical circuits, another person who is familiar with the power-off controls should be nearby to switch off the power, if necessary.

► Use only one hand when working with powered-on electrical equipment. This is to avoid making a complete circuit, which will cause electrical shock. Use extreme caution when using metal tools, which can easily damage any electrical components or circuit boards they come into contact with.

► Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection against electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specifically designed as electrical insulators.

► The power supply power cord must include a grounding plug and must be plugged into grounded electrical outlets.

► CAUTION: There is a danger of explosion if the on-board battery is installed upside down, which will reverse its polarities. This battery must be replaced only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

► CAUTION: This server may have come equipped with a DVD-ROM drive. To prevent direct exposure to the laser beam and hazardous radiation exposure, do not open the enclosure or use the unit in any unconventional way.

Batteries ► Improper handling while removing the battery increases the danger

of explosion. Only replace the battery with a recommended type. ► Stick to the regulations dictated by your country or region. ► Do not operate your computer with any cover(s) (including computer

covers, bezels, filler brackets, front-panel inserts, etc.) removed.

Disposal and recyclingThis unit consists primarily of environmentally friendly material. Computers and related electronic equipment contain substances such as metals, glass, plastics, and certain chemical compounds that are highly recoverable, recyclable, and reusable. By recycling your old equipment in a responsible manner, you can keep electronic products out of our landfills and help maximize the use of our natural resources. The crossed-out refuse bin indicates that the products must be properly recycled or disposed of appropriately in accordance with national legislation in the respective EU countries. If you wish to dispose of used electrical and electronic products outside the European Union, please contact your local authority so as to comply with the correct disposal method.

General safety precautions ► Keep the area around the chassis clean and free of clutter. ► Place the chassis top cover and any system components that have

been removed away from the system or on a table so that they won’t be stepped on accidentally.

► While working on the system, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties and unbuttoned shirt sleeves, which can come into contact with electrical circuits or be pulled into a cooling fan.

► Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body because they are excellent metal conductors that can create short circuits and harm you if they come into contact with printed circuit boards or areas where power is present.

► After accessing the inside of the system, close the system back up and secure it to the rack unit with the retention screws after ensuring that all connections have been made.

System safetyElectrostatic discharge (ESD) is generated by two objects with different electrical charges coming into contact with each other. An electrical discharge is created to neutralize this difference, which can damage electronic components and printed circuit boards. The following measures are generally sufficient to neutralize this difference before contact is made to protect your equipment from ESD:

► Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specifically designed as electrical insulators.

► Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge. ► Keep all components and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in their

antistatic bags until ready for use. ► Touch a grounded metal object before removing any card from its

antistatic bag. ► Do not let components or PCBs come into contact with your clothing,

which may retain a charge even if you are wearing a wrist strap.

► Handle a card by its edges only; do not touch its components, peripheral chips, memory modules, or contacts.

► When handling chips or modules, avoid touching their pins. ► Put the server board and peripherals back into their antistatic bags

when not in use. ► For grounding purposes, make sure your computer chassis provides

excellent conductivity between the power supply, the case, the mounting fasteners, and the server board.

ConformityThe following described product is in conformity with the following EC guidelines:

• Directive 2004/108/EC Of the European Parliament and of the council of 15th December 2004 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility. 2004/108/EC is the 2nd Edition of the EMC Directive, and one of its major differences from the first edition 89/336/EEC is that it includes specific requirements for what it calls “Fixed Installations”, and for equipment that is sold directly for them (and not available to just anyone).

• Low voltage directive 2006/95/EC

• Directive 2002/95/EC and 2002/96/EC The primary aim of the WEEE Directive and RoHS Directive is to reduce the impact of disposal of electrical and electronic equipment at end-of-life. The WEEE Directive aims to reduce the amount of WEEE sent for disposal to landfill or incineration by requiring producers to arrange for collection and recycling. The RoHS Directive bans the use of certain heavy metals and brominates flame retardants to reduce the environmental impact of WEEE which is landfilled or incinerated. eyevis has implemented necessary process changes to comply with the European RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) and the European WEEE Directive (2002/96/EC).

The CE mark attached to the product certifies compliance with the requirements. The manufacturer is not responsible for operation performed outside the described operating conditions. The product liability as well as the guarantee will expire.

Front fanTwo standard fans are located inside the front panel and can be removed separately. These two fans supply fresh and cool air to the inside of the chassis. They are hot swappable by default. The dust filter is removable and cleanable.

Hard drivesThe netPIX series controllers are delivered with a 256 GB capacity SSD (Solid State Disk). As an option, they can be expanded with one or two additional SSDs. In this case, the SSDs can be run in RAID 1 (two disks) or RAID 5 (three disks). Alternatively, standard disk drives (HDD) with 500 GB instead of the SSDs are available too.

The raid controllerThe NPX-4900 has an on-board raid controller for (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10) configuration. RAID 1 and RAID 5 configurations are available, whereas the standard configuration is RAID 1. A RAID 1 array contains two hard drives where the data is mirrored between them in real-time to provide good data reliability in the case of a single disk failure; when one disk drive fails, all data is immediately available on the other without any impact on the integrity of the data. For information on how to configure the RAID 1 array, see “Configuring the RAID 1 array” on page 35.

► Installation may only be performed by trained specialists.

Installation guidelinesInstallation in a rack assembly is recommended for this product. Carefully read the following guidelines to ensure the NPX-4900 can maintain optimum operation.

Elevated ambient temperatureIf installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than the ambient temperature of the room. Therefore, make sure to install the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature of 35 °C.

Reduced air flowMaintain an unrestricted, permanent airflow around the installed equipment. For rack installation, we recommend leaving a minimum of 1U above the expansion chassis.

Mechanical loadingTo minimize possible hazardous conditions when mounting the equipment in a rack, avoid uneven mechanical loading.

Circuit overloadingMake sure the equipment is properly connected to the supply circuit and follow equipment ratings to avoid overloading the circuits.

Reliable groundingMaintain reliable grounding of rack-mounted equipment. Particular attention should be given to supply connections rather than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g., use of power strips).

Rated value of the building fuseMake sure that the building fuse fulfils the rated value of 16 A before installing the device! (In North America the value is 20 A)

PowerThe amount of current a power supply can deliver on each voltage rail is limited. Often there is also a limit on the total power. Each OUT4 card requires 0.25 A at +3.3 V and 1.2 A at +12 V. You can calculate the amount of current and the amount of power required for the OUT4 cards. For example, the requirements for a 24-screen system of OUT4 cards are calculated as follows:

Current strength

+3.3 V: 6 x 0.25 A = 1.5 A+12 V: 6 x 1.20 A = 7.2 A

Power consumption

(3.3 V x 1.5 A) + (12 V x 7.2 A) = 91.35 W

These are the requirements for the OUT4 cards; you must take into account the requirements of all the other devices in the system.

Connecting the NPX-4900 controllerThis chapter describes how to connect the controller and how the external sources are connected to the system.

Single module solutionFor minor solutions, the 11 respectively 9 PCIe slots of the CPU modules can be used for input and output cards. If are all slots used then no slot left for the link cards. In such configurations an upgrade is more difficult. For future upgrades one slot should be free for the link card.

Connecting expansion modules to the controllerMedium and large systems require additional expansions (NPX-4900-EXP).

NPX-4900-EXP overviewThe NPX-4900-EXP is connected to the controller with a special cable which extends the standard PCIe bus to the expansion chassis. There are 11 available slots free for input and output cards. The total bandwidth on all slots is 192 GB/s as a switch fabric. This technology ensures high performance without a bandwidth bottleneck. Data can be transmitted from the input cards to the output cards without losing frame rates or quality. Each expansion can be added to another one up to four (NPX-4900S) or five (NPX-4900PLUS) in a row. This results in a total of:

• 41 PCIe slots (NPX-4900S + 4 × NPX-4900-EXP)

• 61 PCIe slots (NPX-4900PLUS + 5 × NPX-4900-EXP)

From the eleven respectively nine slots, the first slot is needed to connect to the other expansion chassis card. The expansions are controlled by the NPX-4900-CPU with power on and power off control.

Connecting an expansion chassis to the CPU unitThe NPX-4900-EXP is used as an expansion chassis providing you the following accessories:

• NPX-4900-HLink-G3 card

• NPX-4900-SLink-G3 card

• NPX-4900-CABLE-LINK-G3

1. Power down the host machine.2. Insert the NPX-4900-HLink card into the first PCIe slot.3. Use the NPX-4900-CABLE-LINK-G3 to connect the HLink card of the

CPU module with the SLink card of the expansion.

Connecting more than one chassisIt is possible to connect more than one expansion chassis to a host machine, increasing the number of PCIe slots available. There are two possibilities to connect several expansion chassis: serial cabling or star cabling (only with NPX-4900Plus).

Serial cabling (Daisy-Chain)For serial cabling, only one expansion chassis is connected to the controller chassis. Each further expansion chassis is connected to the last connected expansion chassis. Figure 2 illustrates how this can be achieved. If more than one expansion chassis is connected to a host machine, the NPX-4900-HLink-G3 card in the first expansion chassis must be inserted in the first slot. The NPX-4900-SLink-G3 card in the second expansion chassis have to be installed in the PICMG1.3 SBC slot.

) NOTE:When inserting PCI cards into the host machine or expansion chassis, ensure the system is powered off prior to any cards being installed.

Star cabling(Only available with the NPX-4900Plus)Star cabling offers high performance and maximum power as each expansion chassis is directly connected to the controller chassis to avoid bottlenecks if data is sent through several expension chassis. Figure 3 illustrates how this can be achieved. The NPX-4900-HLink-G3 cards in the controller chassis must be inserted in the first slots. The NPX-4900-SLink-G3 card in each expansion chassis must be installed in the PICMG1.3 SBC slot.

Fibre optic link cablingFor special solutions we can offer a fibre optic link cabling. Mostly interesting if e.q. different walls must be controlled over a long distance (up to 100m). In this situation the combination of fibre optic link cabling and star cabling offers a cost effective and flexible system. The expansion chassis can be placed directly near the wall and connected with the CPU module over the fibre optic cabling. This reduces the number of fibre optic cables needed to connect the wall. With the fibre optic link cabling the customer can choose between full or half performance. For full performance both connections are needed to one Expansion chassis. With only one connection the half performance is offered. If only the half perfomance is needed, the possibility exists to connect two Expansions on one HLink fibre optic link card. For detailed information please contact our service team.

NPX-4900 LEDsThe NPX-4900 backplane has an LED for each PCIe slot and the PICMG1.3 slot. The LEDs indicate the following:

• Flashes on for 1.5 seconds then off for 0.5 seconds. This indicates that the full lane width has been established for that slot e.g. x8 card in a x8 slot

• Flashes on for 0.5 seconds then off for 1.5 seconds. This indicates that a reduced lane width has been established and the slot is not working to maximum efficiency, e.g. a x1 card inserted into a x4 slot.

• No LEDs flashing. This indicates that lane width has not been established. The LEDs will not flash on slots where no cards are fitted.

NPX-4900-IN8-VID-1 analog video input cardThe NPX-4900-IN8-VID-1is an 8-channel PCI express video capture card. The card supports PAL, NTSC, and SECAM in both composite and S-video input formats. NPX-4900-IN8-VID-1 supports deinterlacing options and frame rates with 25/30 fps for real-time. The on-board processor for real-time mode and sync detection automatically detects each input signal. If a signal is lost, a “No Signal” notification appears to eliminate frozen pictures on the wall. For each channel the color, brightness and contrast can be adjusted and the color mode is YUV in 16 bit. The VID8 card has 16x female BNC connectors to connect composite or either S-Video signals. 16x cards can be used in one system to achieve 128x video signals at the same time. Up to 32 video windows can be displayed on every display output. In such cases, complex systems can be configured to realize a large number of video signals in real-time simultaneously on the wall.

ConnectionsThe IN8-VID has two 26-way D-type connectors. Either connector can be used to input video signals using a 16-way splitter cable (provided). The splitter cable consists of 16 BNC sockets numbered 1-16, connected to a 26-way D-type connector. To connect a video input, connect the Composite/S-Video Luma and Chroma as indicated in the table below.

Change the RAID settings

NOTICEData loss by changes on RAIDEach change which will be made on the existing RAID, will cause the lost of all data on the disks.

► Make changes only when you have made a backup of the system and/or your data.

1. In order to change the settings for the internal RAID-Controller press “CTRL+I” as soon as you see the upper windows on your screen.

2. To create a new RAID Array, select “1. Create RAID Volume”. The following window will appear.

3. Define a name for the new array. Standard is RAID 1.

Select the “RAID level”. Possible settings are: RAID 0; 1; 5; 10

RAID 0 (Striping): RAID 0 uses the read/write capabilities of two or more disks working in unison to maximize the storage performance of a computer system.

RAID 1 (Mirroring): A RAID 1 array contains two disks where the data between the two is mirrored in real-time to provide good data reliability in the case of a single disk failure; when one disks fails, all data is immediately available on the other without any impact on the integrity of the data.

RAID 5 (Striping with Parity):

A RAID 5 array contains three or more disks where the data and parity are striped across in the array. Parity is a mathematical method for recreating data that was lost from a single disk, which increases fault-tolerance.

RAID 10 (RAID 1+0): A RAID 10 array uses four disks to create a combination of RAID levels 0 and 1. It is a striped set whose members are each mirrored sets.

) NOTEThe netPIX series provides the RAID 1 in its standard settings.

Configuring the software

Configuring the output layout

NOTICEDamage to plug-in cardsAll plug-in cards are static-sensitive and packed in antistatic materials.

► Keep the card in its packaging until you are ready to install.

) NOTE: It is recommended that all OUT4 cards and any input cards are installed in the system prior to installing the drivers. Otherwise, as cards are installed, the drivers may need to be reinstalled since the card’s PCI bus numbers change.

) NOTE: Do not discard the packing box until you are completely satisfied with the OUT4 card, and it is fully installed and working correctly.

) NOTE: Make note of the serial number of the card in a prominent place before you plug the card into the system. This should speed up any query should you need to contact our technical support department. The serial number is displayed on the card and the box label.

1. Power down the system (including peripherals), switch off at the mains, and disconnect all the cables connected to the system, noting their positions for accurate reconnection. Remove the cover.

2. Locate a vacant PCIe slot for the OUT4 on the motherboard and remove the backing plate (retain all screws). If in doubt, consult your motherboard documentation to correctly identify a PCIe (PCI-express) slot. If the card is forced into a 32 or 64 bit PCI or PCI-X slot, it will be irreparably damaged when the system is powered up and the warranty will be void.

3. Remove the card from its packaging and secure it firmly into the empty PCIe slot. Extreme care should be taken when securing the card into the slot, as some motherboards may have components that impede the sitting of the card.

4. Screw the card bracket to the back panel of the system. Connect screens to all the outputs from the card. If there are other graphic devices in the system, connect screens to them (even if you don’t intend to use all the outputs in your final configuration)

5. Switch all the screens on then switch the machine on. You should see the boot messages on one of the screens. The screen on which the system will boot is dependent on how the system is configured and the motherboard BIOS. It is not possible to control which of the OUT4 heads the system will boot on.

6. Setup the wall layout. Define the “Number of screens” available and finalize your settings with the “Screen arrangement.”

) NOTEFour screens per GPU is the standard solution. If you need a high resolution on the output cards you must change this value to 2 screens per GPU („Performance Mode“). In this case you can only use the upper two connectors of the card instead of all four.

7. To complete the installation, define the resolution “Screen area” of each Cube/LCD.

ª The complete desktop area will be calculated automatically.

) NOTEWXGA (1366x768) resolution is only available in a configuration which will be performed later inside your actual Windows desktop. For now, select the Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. The complete configuration is described in “Multi-screen configuration” on page 46.

Force DVI OutputWhen the eyevis display driver initializes, it reads the EDIDs of the attached screens to determine if DVI (digital) or analog outputs should be used. If no monitor EDID is read, this control is used to decide which output to enable. If the checkbox is in an indeterminate state, it signifies that the enabled outputs are not as requested by the user. This will occur if a mixture of analog and digital screens is used or if the type of monitor used is different from the Force DVI state. If the checkbox state is changed, the Apply button will become active. Click on Apply to force the required output. Since the DVI (digital) output supports a lower pixel dot-clock frequency than the analog output, the resolution dialog is updated when the checkbox is changed in order to reflect the resolutions supported by the active output.

Prune ModesEnabling this checkbox limits the resolutions displayed in the resolution box to those that are supported by all of the screens attached to the OUT4 card’s active outputs. This information is read from the monitor EDIDs when the TWIN tab is opened. If the state of this checkbox is changed, the resolution control is updated. When you click on OK or Apply, the following dialog is displayed: ”If you’ve selected your final configuration, restart the machine. Make sure that all displays are connected before restarting the system, otherwise you might have problems”.When Windows starts up, the desktop should be spread across all the screens connected to the OUT4.

) NOTEAlways close all video window applications before performing any operation that modifies the settings of any attached display. Failure to do so could result in the machine locking up and requiring a reboot.

Screen Rotation in DegreesThese settings allow you to rotate the image either to (0°; 90°; 180°; 270°).

Bandwidth of the NPX-4900The core of the system is the ultra-fast PCI express bus interface with PCIe x8 slots (NPX-4900Plus)/PCIe x4 slots (NPX-4900S) and a total bandwidth of 192 GB/s for transmitting Windows®, network information, video- digital streams, and graphic signals to each output card. This guarantees a very high bandwidth without losing frame rates when many inputs are displayed simultaneously. Compared to existing systems, the NPX-4900 bus is one of the fastest “Switch Fabrics” available on the market. However, there are some limitations on the bandwidth in this system which should be known. Each output card has some limitations due to the PCIe slot. This limit can cause problems if many sources must be displayed simultaneously on one of the outputs using one NPX-4900-OUT4-1 card. Resolution of each output and the displayed source also depend on the bandwidth limit. A short example: If the output resolution is Full HD (1920x1080) and you want to display four Full HD (1920x1080) signals, frame rate drops may occur. In this case, it is only possible to show the Full HD source in 30 fps instead of 60 fps. However if the output resolution is reduced all 4 Full HD sources can be displayed at 60 fps. In addition, using only 2x channels of an output card increases performance so you can show more bandwidth-hungry HD video sources (Performance Mode). There is also a limitation on the BUS from one expansion to the other ones. The link between the expansions chassis is limited to the PCIe x8 speed, which transfers 8 GB/s in both directions. As a result, streaming many sources across the whole system could result in bandwidth limitations and reduced frame rates. The NPX-4900-EXP has a never-before-seen bandwidth to set-up large systems and guarantee real-time images, but like every system there are limits which have to be calculated. For each scenario there is an optimal layout and this must be known, to prepare the system with an optimal configuration layout during project planning.

Page 76: netPIX 4900 Series€¦ · NPX-4900-IN2-SDI-3G-1 SDI- & HD-SDI Input.. 30 NPX-4900-IN1-DVI-DL-1 Dual-link DVI Input. 30 NPX-4900-IN8-VID-1 analog video input card . 31 Connecting

Calculating the required bandwidthApply the following formula to calculate the bandwidth for an input source of different sizes or frame rates:

NPX-4900 bandwidth of the source =Hor. Res x Vert. Res x color mode x frame rate Hor. Res x Vert. Res

When a source is scaled down on the input “prescaling”, the correct resolution must be used.

Color modeFor all DVI and RGB inputs, the format can be chosen from 5:6:5, 5:5:5, or 8:8:8 and YUV. YUV, RGB 8:8:8 uses 16 bits and is calculated with the factor color mode = 2RGB 8:8:8 uses 24 bits and is calculated with the factor color mode = 3

Frame rateThe standard frame rates for video are 25 fps (PAL/SECAM) and 30 fps (NTSC). For dynamic DVI inputs, a frame rate of 30 fps is normal for standard operation. For movies and fast content, the full frame rate can also be selected and is normally 50 or 60 Hz. For static content, a lower frame rate can be selected between 5 and 10 fps.

Example:

A source with 1920x1080 with 60 Hz and color mode in 16 bit is calculated as follows: NPX-4900 bandwidth of the source = 1920 x 1080 x 2 x 60 =246 MB/s

netPIX 4900 Series74

User Manual

Page 77: netPIX 4900 Series€¦ · NPX-4900-IN2-SDI-3G-1 SDI- & HD-SDI Input.. 30 NPX-4900-IN1-DVI-DL-1 Dual-link DVI Input. 30 NPX-4900-IN8-VID-1 analog video input card . 31 Connecting

Bandwidth limits inside the complete systemThe maximum number of input streams capable of being processed and displayed depends directly on the bandwidth of the various components in the system. The PCI Express Bus provides a min. 1.8 GB/s of data transfer between the expansions, while the max. bandwidth is around 192 GB/s in each expansion.

Expansion overview bandwidth:

Expansion to expansion: 8 GB/s in both directionsExpansion switch fabric: 192 GB/s in both directionsOutput card: 800 MB/sInput card: Up to 3.2 GB/s, only with the

NPX-4900-IN4-DV

Example calculation of the bandwidth in a system:

In this example, the system should drive 24x DVI signals, each at 1920x1080 and 60 Hz. The color mode will be 16 bit in 5:6:5. Each source should be displayed on one of the outputs. The controller is also equipped with 24x outputs. This configuration requires three expansions. 24 x 1920 x 1080 x 2 x 60 = total of needed bandwidth if all sources are streamed across is 5971 MB/s.5971 MB/s inside each expansion is permissible, as the limit is 192 GB/s. However a problem may occur if all inputs are streamed across all expansions. This is the absolutely worst case scenario due to the limit between each chassis. A possible workaround is reduce the frame rate to 30 fps to eliminate any bandwidth issues. The other, standard solution for such a configuration is to configure the system to an optimal layout. In most of the scenarios, no over cross switching is necessary, only in some cases, where the system can be configured efficiently.
