VISIONARY OR FANTASY? CREATING OPEN SPACES FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INCLUSION

VISIONARY OR FANTASY? CREATING OPEN SPACES FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INCLUSION.

SiS Catalyst & EUCU.NET Joint Conference Vienna, 10th–12th September 2014 (& SiS Catalyst Project Meeting 09th–10th September)

In recent years, universities and other science organisations have made manifold attempts to open up spaces which used to be limited to particular circle of people and for restricted purposes only. In return these re-defined areas of scientific engagement allowed for new encounters, which would otherwise not have been possible.

New temporarily or permanent environments are created for and with science organisations to engage with the general public – and a very specific audience than their customary target group became relevant: children and young people.

Children’s Universities and similar programs have al-ready proven as successful models in many aspects, even though the driving motivation behind them is quite

diverse. The manifold types and characteristics of the Children’s University models, as well as of similar science in society (SiS) interventions, may be based on the at-tempt to raise awareness for the concerns of science and research in general, or on science education. Or they may aim to promote study programs in STEM fields because of a decline in enrollment or a supposed demand on the labor market – and to impact on educational aspirations. They may also be driven by the motivation to show soci-etal responsibility predominately or as a means to present universities in a new light.

Notwithstanding their individual objectives, Children’s Uni-versities have been discussed as potential change models for the education system. Based on their inherent principles,

VISIONARY OR FANTASY? CREATING OPEN SPACES FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INCLUSION

Children’s Universities can be capable of influencing in-formed decisions about science in general and about con-tinuing education and careers in science and research in the longer run.

As baseline value there seems to be a growing common understanding that such SiS initiatives must be accessible for all society members to have sustainable effect and not just include preferred groups. As a consequence an increasing number of SiS organisers has started to de-velop even more specific programs for special audiences, or tried to address a wider range of participants with ex-isting offers – and made this an overriding aim.

But how do we interact with those who are actually partici-pating? Who are the ones addressed by such programs in practice and what do organisers need to know about the so-cial environment around them? What is their impact in this endeavor and how is this relating to the current concepts and definitions of “inclusion” and “minority”? Moreover, we will also consider ethical and organisational implications: When we open up spaces and enable non-traditional audi-ences to get a foot in the door, how can SiS organisers help to keep those rooms open – literally, over time and also in the strategic thinking? In the long run, how can the concept of “inclusion” and the engagement with children and young people contribute to a transformation of science intuitions, so that providing first insights over the fence will not be frustrated by reality of life!

The “Visionary or Fantasy” conference in Vienna 2014 will tackle fundamental questions about science learning en-vironments and the discussion about affirmative actions and promote successful approaches in various workshops.

WHO IS ORGANISING THE CONFERENCE?

This is a joint conference of the FP7 project SiS Catalyst and the European Children’s Universities Network – EUCU.NET. Participation at the conference is free of charge. The confer-ence is organised by the Vienna University Children’s Office (Kinderbüro Universität Wien), the University of Vienna and EUCU.NET. SiS Catalyst is a four year science in society project funded by the European Commission. This project is about includ-ing children and young people in the dialogue between science and society. The pace of change is accelerating and our children´s ability to operate within the developing technology will soon put them in a position which out-strips our ability to teach them. It is time for a mutual learning for the future. SiS Catalyst is also about promot-ing social inclusion in the field of education, focusing on young people currently unlikely to progress to higher edu-cation. (www.siscatalyst.eu)

The European Children’s Universities Network (EUCU.NET) focuses on the exchange of professional expertise and knowledge amongst organisers of Children’s Universities and similar projects all over Europe and beyond. Although the network was founded as a European platform for co-operation and communication, we involve partners and members from many countries outside of Europe as well. Children’s Universities are university outreach programmes which include a commitment to the encouragement of curiosity and critical thinking, to focus on principal ideas of a university and the diversity of the research fields and methods and to work with children in such a way as to help universities to be more responsive and open.
