Confessions of a (Recovered) Christmas Cranky-pantsI love Christmas! I love Christmas Eve too. I love watching my family give and receive gifts, overeat delicious food and enjoy all this warmth and festivity in my beautifully decorated home.

But … I don’t like Christmas shopping. I don’t like wrapping presents. I don’t like decorating, and I’m not too crazy about the cooking and baking anymore either. I especially don’t like the pressure of having it all done on time.

Forgive my crankiness. I wasn’t always like this, quite the opposite really. Stories of my Black Friday maneuvers are legendary. Back then, I moved with battle-planned preci-

sion from one store’s 5a.m. opening to another’s 6 a.m. opening, and I continued on that way until every Early Bird special on my carefully researched list was purchased. Food preparation and decorating received the same focused intensity.

In those days, my To Do lists were lengthy. I baked and froze everyone’s favorite treats. I wrapped and kept all gift piles equal in volume and cost, and I decorated the house with greens and lights and bows until it sparkled and shined.

I was a lean, mean, Christmas-making machine and everyone enjoyed and appreciated the result of my efforts.

What Moms-To-Be Should Know About Chiropractic Care

PregnAnCyregular chiropractic care in pregnancy helps promote balance, alignment and flexibility. Many women report less morning sickness and feel healthy throughout their pregnancy. Chiropractic care can relieve and prevent the pain and discomfort frequently experienced in pregnancy, creating an environment for an easier, safer delivery. It is a safe and effective way to help the spine and pelvis cope with the rapid changes by restoring a state of balance. In fact, most women have found that chiropractic care helped them avoid the use of pain medications during their pregnancy, and studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments help to reduce time in labor.

Labor and bIrthMothers who get adjusted seem to require less high tech intervention, resulting in shorter, less traumatic deliveries. With proper nerve supply, effective contractions help move the baby more easily through the birth path. also, when a baby is comfortable, he or she can assume the optimal birth position resulting in a faster, simpler labor and birth.

Post deLIveryChiropractic care is beneficial to both mother and baby after delivery. even natural births can stress a baby’s spine. a chiropractic check up for your newborn can make for an easier start to breastfeeding. breastfeeding problems arise if a baby is unable to comfortably turn its head. you can relax knowing that a light touch is used to make adjustments safe, comfortable and effective.

However, the more efficient I became at preparing for Christmas, the more I added to my list of things to do. I didn’t gain anything by starting early. I just did more, spent more and complained more. I locked myself in the routine in the name of tradition. After all, how could Christmas happen without bacon-and-brown-sugar-wrapped breadsticks?

You see where this is going. At some point the solution became the problem. Oops. Getting Christmas done became a project that required physical, emotional and financial stress. Cranky became part of the process. It was woven into holiday preparations with the tinsel

and greeting cards. Focusing on the process rather than the goal eventually led me to feel exhausted and resentful. (This was particularly unfair to my family since I, not they, chose to complicate the holidays.)

Eventually, instead of intensifyingmy efforts to do “a better job of Christmas,” I realized it was time fora goal change.

Terry’s Christmas Makeover • These days, I stay in bed after Thanksgiving. As a result, I save money by purchasing less stuff. After sleeping in, I find some deals online.

• I buy poinsettias early and often. I love poinsettias!

• I delegate my least favorites tasks, such as the Christmas cards, some baking and shopping, and hanging outdoor Christmas lights. I’ve accepted that in delegating I need to give up some quality control.

• I combine my tasks with fun by shopping with a friend.

• I don’t do what I don’t want to do. For instance, I no longer pull out all of the decorations.

• I recite: “If it’s delicious, what’s the difference who makes it?”

• I make liberal, guilt-free use of reusable gift bags.

I will always love Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. By examining the mistakes I made over the years I’m recovering my enjoyment of the preparations as well.

I’ve tweaked my goals. I’m decluttering what doesn’t belong. I’m keeping what supports them and eliminating what does not. I’ve realized that the best way to enjoy the season is to know when to stop and let done be done, unless I’m having fun.

The new year often brings with it a mix of feelings, ranging from the possibility of a fresh beginning to the dread of more failed resolutions. Getting in shape, along with the closely associated goal of losing weight, tops many a resolution list.

While some people actually power their way through their list of resolutions, a recent University of Scranton study estimated that only 8 percent of those who made resolutions on January 1, 2012 would actually meet their goals. On a more upbeat note,49 percent would achieve some success. Even better, people who are compelled to make resolutions are more likely to make changes in their lives than are folks who don’t resolve to any revamping.

So, make those resolutions to exercise more. Then, do everything you can to improve your chances of success.

Step 1: Accept the cold and dress appropriatelyIt’s winter. It’s going to be cold. Human bodies are designed to withstand frigid weather, so getting into the proper frame of mind can allow you to accept the cold even if you can’t embrace the chilly temperatures. (It can help to run a banner through your mind reminding yourself how bloody hot it was last summer.)

Here’s the great thing about exercising in the cold: your body heats up as you work out and after a short time, you’ll actually start shedding clothes. That’s why the runner you see in winter garbed only in a t-shirt and light running pants (you know, the one you saw when you muttered how nuts he was) is likely quite comfortable.

Outdoor exercise in winter is possible, even exhilarating, if you gear up correctly

By Nina Fisher

The trick to winter exercise? Dress in lightweight layers and remove a layer or two as you warm up. Carry a waist belt or wrap the removed clothes around your mid-section. Then, as you warm up, you’ll have the layers with you to put back on. You’ll also find that unlike in the summer, when you feel as if you may melt at the end of a workout, winter

exercise will leave you invigorated and pleasantly worn out.

Step 2: Make it socialSome people love to run, hike or walk solo. For these people, exercise is a time for contemplation and recharg-ing. For many others, having someone else (or a group of someone elses) is

12 Nesting • Winter 2012-2013 nestingmagazine.com

Page 8: Nesting Magazine

14 Nesting • Winter 2012 nestingmagazine.com

an important motivator. When you’ve had a rough day and all you want to do is sit on the sofa and drink a glass of wine, it’s extremely motivating to know that a friend is counting on you to exercise. That commitment is often enough to force you to set down that glass of wine and get out the door.

In the Annapolis area, the excuse that none of your friends want to exercise just doesn’t hold water. This area has several clubs that offer all sorts of group exercise activities. Annapolis Striders (annapolisstriders.org) is a running club that welcomes runners of all levels. Many a couch potato has gotten a running start by joining the group’s beginner program, which

meets twice a week and trains people who can barely make it around a track one time to run a 5K “graduation” race. The club also has training programs for longer distance runs as well as weekly group runs.

The Annapolis Bicycle Club (annapolisbicycleclub.org) offers weekly rides, many of which are for bike riders of all abilities. These rides continue throughout the winter. Bike riding is a terrific way to explore the area and get to know tucked-away corners of the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Maryland Outdoor Club (marylandoutdoorclub.org) focuses on non-competitive adventure sports and outings. This all-volunteer organization has trips year-round for

kayaking, hiking, climbing, mountain biking and skiing. The club also has travel and social excursions.

If walking appeals more than working up a serious sweat, Maryland Walkers (meetup.com/Maryland-Walkers-Hikers-Volksmarchers) coordinates non-competitive walking events through parks and historical areas, neighborhoods and on trails. Each event offers a 3.1- or 6.2-mile jaunt.

Alternately, if you don’t want to join a club, ask a few friends or co-workers to team up with you for regular exercising. As soon as you've made the commitment to one another, you’re more likely to stick with the program.

Step 3: Find what you like

Continued from previous page The Internet makes it so easy to find people who like the same things you do. The recent trend of creating meetup groups makes it even easier to find like-minded souls. A meetup website for the greater Annapolis area (outdoor.meetup.com/cities/us/md/Annapolis) features a list of outdoor exercise groups that cover a variety of activities. Browsing the site might pique your interest to try a new sport or get involved in a one you once loved but have set aside.

The Annapolis Sports Variety Pack meetup (meetup.com/Annapolis-Sports-Variety-Pack), caters to people who like variety in their workouts as well as to people who just can’t make up their minds about which sport to embrace This group schedules soccer, skiing and snowboarding, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, kickball and other sports gatherings. It’s a great way to test out a sport and make new friends.

Do whatever it takes, physically and mentally, to get yourself outdoors and moving this winter. You may be surprised to find that the season you once thought of as an adversary has become your new best friend.

A Yummy Way to Get Warm on a Cold Day

By Lucy O’Brien

Step 1: Sauté • 4 tablespoons butter • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion • 1 clove garlic • 1/2 cup chopped apple with skin

Step 2: Add • 1 tablespoon curry powder • 4 tablespoons flour • Cook for 1 to 2 minutes

Step 3: Add • 1 tomato, seeded and chopped • 3 cups chicken stock • Salt and pepper to taste • Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes

Step 4: Add • 16 ounce pumpkin pureé, canned or fresh • 1 cup of heavy cream or, for a lighter version, non-fat evaporated milk • 1/4 cup dry sherry • Old Bay seasoning to taste

I love cold weather dinners. A couple of weeks ago my mom and I made pumpkin soup from a recipe she picked up at our local farmer’s market. This soup has a mix of great flavors and your kids are sure to love it as much as I do. Another plus: pumpkin is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, and it’s packed full of good stuff, including vitamin E, B6, A, C, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and potassium.

In today’s health-conscious environment, more and more people are choosing products that are as unprocessed as possible: organic vegetables, paraben-free soaps, organic clothing and chemical-free cleaning products. Similarly, more and more expectant mothers are opting for intervention-free, “natural” births.

“Many people are fearful of birth,” says Jennifer Caniglio, director of Bay Area Midwifery in Annapolis. “Learning what's involved reduces the fear level, which leads to less tension in the birth process.”

The following natural childbirth methods help mothers and their birth partners to have safer, more relaxing and, often, less painful deliveries without the use of epidurals or other pain medications.

HypnoBirthingNesting publisher Kim O'Brien is a certified HypnoBirthing

instructor. After seeing a story about HypnoBirthing on TV's Dateline NBC, she decided to use HypnoBirthing for the delivery of her daughter, Lucy. When she couldn't find a local HypnoBirthing practitioner, O’Brien became one herself!

The Mongan Method (the official term for HypnoBirthing) teaches a pregnant woman and her birth partner a combination of deep relaxation, self hypnosis, visualization and relaxed breathing techniques. Couples are also taught about the stages of labor, perineal and light touch massage, and how to avoid an artificial induction. The Mongan Method is taught during five classes that meet over five consecutive weeks. Participants receive a book and CDs for practice and use on delivery day.

HypnoBirthing takes the fear out of birthing and teaches moms to be calm and relaxed in mind, body and spirit. By having a

heightened sense of awareness, a mom is very much in tune with what her body and baby are doing. Pain can be lessened and even eliminated through the practice of HypnoBirthing.

“HypnoBirthing isn't something that's done to you,” says O'Brien. "Expectant mothers control the process, but for HypnoBirthing to work, the techniques need to be practiced."

For more information, visit HypnoBirthing.com as well as O'Brien's own website,annapolisHypnoBirthing.com, where you can find information about private and group classes.

Bradley MethodThe Bradley Method is a 12-week course based on the philosophy “Healthy Baby, Healthy Mother, and Healthy Families.” Breathing, relaxation, nutrition, exercise and education are all part of the method. Physical training is essential and exercises are outlined in the Bradley workbook to ensure proper training for childbirth. In fact, Dr. Rosbert A. Bradley, the ob/gyn who created the method in the late 1940s, referred to birth as a “sporting event.”

The Bradley Method teaches a woman to trust her body. Coaches are an essential element of the Bradley Method, which is also referred to as “husband-coached birthing.” Advocates consider 12 weeks a small investment of time given the reward of a drug-free childbirth. Bradley boasts a 90 percent success rate for unmedicated births.

For more information and to find local instructors, visit bradleybirth.com.

Birthing From WithinAfter undergoing a highly-unplanned cesarean section, Pam England set out to educate herself, and eventually others. Birthing From Within is the result of her decade of research and education.

The Birthing From Within method considers childbirth to be a rite of passage rather than a medical event. Women are encouraged to know themselves and be open to the unexpected events that may come about. Birth partners are referred to as guardians and are seen as also needing support.

For more about Birthing From Within, visit birthingfromwithin.com.

Every childbirth experience is different. Unexpected complications can arise in any delivery, and moms may find themselves deviating from a well-planned birth plan.

While being surprised by a change of plans can be unsettling, being prepared can work wonders. Preparation helps a woman participate in her delivery rather than merely experiencing it. Even if a woman plans to use pain management medications, these methods can help her cope with — and improve — her labor and delivery experience.
