Media Update: ABC 4Corners Coverage
Dear Debra,
While there has been a slight reprieve over the last few weeks on negative media about
aged care ACSA expects the cycle to kick back into gear in coming weeks.
The main media we are focusing on is a two-part series by ABC’s 4Corners which will
revive the ‘aged care crisis’ narrative the media seem to love so much.
Although no firm date has been provided, ACSA’s contact with the ABC suggests this will
go to air in the next few weeks – so sometime between now and the National Summit on
September 3-5.
From our investigations we understand the program will be covering general quality,
accreditation and complaints, profits, ratios and staffing issues. We understand it is likely
that the program will also call for a Royal Commission.
ACSA has had considerable contact with the producers pushing for the industry to have a
right-of-reply. Because of the focus on profit and the featuring of at least one for-profit
provider in this instance 4Corners has decided to interview LASA.
This coverage will almost certainly fan the ‘aged care in crisis’ coverage in the mainstream
press.
To the extent that the coverage will have a “for-profit’ focus, and likely include a media
“gotcha” moment, it is better for ACSA membership not to be associated too closely with
the programs when they air. However we will be responding strongly to defend the
industry’s reputation as well as advancing our own positive media campaign (which will be
previewed at the ACSA Summit ahead of a formal launch) to try and reclaim the public
aged care narrative.
Our media strategy on behalf of members will include:
• A media statement in response to the programs. This will be written either jointly
with the other peaks or separately if there is value in distinguishing between our
NFP members and the for-profit members of other peaks.
• We have proactive media to roll out in the days following 4Corners but this will be
guided by media closer to the time. We will also develop and distribute to members
a number of documents aimed at supporting you in effectively answering any
questions you may receive regarding the 4Corners subject matter, and processes
for dealing with any media enquires you may receive.
• In the meantime, ACSA would like those who see so much good in aged care to
have a way of expressing it. We intend to start a social media campaign with use of
a dedicated # to create viral sharing across our own channels and those of third
parties, highlighting positive aged care experiences. Additionally at ACSA’s
National Summit on September 3-5 we will be presenting a new shared storytelling
format to give a stronger voice to all those extraordinary individuals we don’t hear
enough about. In the meantime, we encourage ACSA members to continue to use
our Twitter handle @ACSANational and Facebook sites to promote your industry.
We understand how corrosive negative press is on the trust providers share with residents
and families and that is why ACSA is working hard on a campaign to positively promote the
good in our industry.
We will keep you updated of our efforts when appropriate. In the meantime, please send
through any media-related questions to ACSA’s Media Manager, Emily Parkinson:

Dear Member,
The NCOSS Board is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Kathy Chapman
as the Interim NCOSS CEO.
Kathy comes to NCOSS having served in several high profile roles within Cancer
Council NSW, including as the Director of its Cancer Programs Division and periods as
the Acting CEO.
Kathy combines a profound understanding of the NSW policy and advocacy landscape
with her experience working with communities and key stakeholders to identify and
advocate for the change they want to see – including many years working with NCOSS.
At the Cancer Council she was responsible for prevention programs, support programs
and services for people affected by cancer as well as advocacy and government
relations.
Her advocacy and government relations work at Cancer Council NSW achieved
tobacco control legislation; a ban on commercial solariums; increased transport
subsidies for people travelling for medical treatment; and additional government
investment ($100 million) in palliative care.
These successes in advocating for policy change involved the Cancer Council’s
innovative model of creating a social movement by mobilising and organising
grassroots volunteers to demonstrate the strength of community support to politicians.
Kathy is also a Non-Executive Board Director at Healthy Kids Association, a non-
government organisation focused on health promotion for children in schools, families
and communities.
The Board would also like to take this opportunity to thank Melanie Fernandez for her
strong leadership and fantastic work as Acting CEO up until now.
The process of recruiting of a permanent NCOSS CEO is underway and a further
announcement will be made in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Davies
NCOSS President

Hi All,
Thank you to those who came to our initial planning session for the GoCo Tamworth Community Aged
Care Meetings moving forward.
Through this planning session it was determined that you would like to:
keep a Tamworth centric Aged Care sector focus, but extend the invitation further abroad to
encourage new attendees especially from the ATSI specific service provision domain
• have a sector specific guest speaker at each meeting providing information on topics such as wellness and reablement, the new quality standards, dementia, and other interagency/provider guest speakers
• monitor and resolve sector related issues collaboratively as a working group and • have an ‘open space’ component where attendees are able to have discussion outside/after the
meeting at a place of their choosing. Given that we only have an hour for each meeting this will provide people with the opportunity to follow up with each other afterward if they choose to, there are ample sitting areas in the Community Centre and tea and coffee facilities too.
That being said I am excited to announce our first guest speaker being Deb Pugh, who is going provide
us with an information session on wellness!
Please RSVP by Friday the 31st of August for catering purposes as lunch will be provided.
Thank you and I hope to see you all there!
Kind Regards

Housing the top issue at Singleton Interagency
Last week NCOSS attended the combined Singleton and
Maitland interagency meeting to consult with local services
about the key issues facing their community. We heard about
how the mining industry has affected the supply of affordable
housing stock in the Upper Hunter area, and that the social housing waiting list
continues to grow. NCOSS will continue to incorporate these community conversations
into our election platform.
Parliamentary inquiry into Fresh Food Pricing
Last week NCOSS Interim CEO Dr Kathy Chapman appeared
before the NSW Parliament inquiry into fresh food pricing to
discuss our submission and its 2018 Cost of Living report to be
launched next month. This year our Cost of Living research
focuses on food insecurity and barriers to low income families accessing fresh, healthy
food in NSW. Watch this space.
Putting a spotlight on homelessness
Homelessness NSW is proud to support the recent National
Homelessness Week, which raised awareness of people
experiencing homelessness, the issues they face and the
action needed to achieve enduring solutions. As part of the
week Homelessness NSW launched its Election Platform and a series of infographics
that paint a picture of the experience of Homelessness in NSW.
