• The nervous system is separated into two major divisions:

• The central nervous system

• The peripheral nervous system

The Central Nervous System Purpose

• This is the control center for the body

• The central nervous system relays messages, processes information, and analyzes information

The Brain

• Is the place to which impulses flow and from which impulses originate

• It contains approx. 100 billion neurons

• It has a mass of about 1.4 kilogram (about 3 pounds)

The Cerebrum• the largest and most prominent

region of the brain• Responsible for the voluntary or

conscious activities of the body• Site of intelligence and learning• Deep groove inside divides it

between left and right hemispheres

Let’s look at the brain more closely!

Brain Stem: connects the brain and the

spinal cord. It regulates the flow of information between the brain and the rest of the body.

Frontal Lobe: Located in the front (behind

the forehead) and responsible for higher level cognition (executive functioning), weighing risks and rewards and improved ability for regulating emotions and thoughts through greater connection to other brain areas. This section of the brain is not fully mature until the mid 20's!!!!

Temporal Lobe: Located in the

lower part of the brainby the ear and responsible for auditory processing and some aspects of memory. Tells you what you hear, responsible for some auditory memory. Also locatednear outer ear and plays a part in the balance system.

Occipital Lobe: This lobe is located

in the back of the brain and is responsible for processing visual stimuli. Some say 90% of your learning is through your eyes.

Cerebellum: (striped blue area). A

two lobed system overlying the top of the brain-stem (yellow stem in picture to right) that helps control coordination. balance and some aspects of motor learning. The "little brain" is like the auto-pilot that allows us to talk and walk "automatically" without thinking about the actions.

Parietal Lobe: This lobe is located in the

upper back of the brain. This "association lobe" communicates with other lobes. It multi-tasks and is responsible for sensory integration. It is activated each time a thought changes (a shoe that was too tight is now too loose).

Neurons

Page 28: Nervous System - Mrs. Reed Fresno High school · •The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The Brain. The Brain •Is the place to which impulses flow

Neurons

• Neurons – cells that transmit electrical signals called impulses

• There are 3 types:• Sensory neurons- carry impulses from the sense organs to the spinal cord and

brain

• Motor neurons carry impulses from the brain and the spinal cord to muscles and glands

• Interneurons – connect sensory and motor neurons and carry impulses between them.

• What are neurons?

• Take notes so you understand

Page 30: Nervous System - Mrs. Reed Fresno High school · •The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The Brain. The Brain •Is the place to which impulses flow

Use pages 897-898 and your phone or laptop

• On one page in your notebook paste the neuron on the very top. Then write out the definitions for each part of the neuron cell.

Page 31: Nervous System - Mrs. Reed Fresno High school · •The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The Brain. The Brain •Is the place to which impulses flow

Label and color the diagram. For each label write a brief description in your notebook. Use pages 897-898 in the Biology textbook.

Nerve Impulse

Page 34: Nervous System - Mrs. Reed Fresno High school · •The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The Brain. The Brain •Is the place to which impulses flow

• You and your group is being challenged!!!!

• I want you to make a poster of how a neuron fires.

• Here is the most important thing: You must know and explain how this happens!!!

• If everyone in your group can explain this you all will get a grade of an A for a test score.

• You can use the laptops and your textbooks page 898-899

• Good luck!
