Important Changes for E - Recycling

Effective March 1, 2012 the Neptune Township Department of Public Works will no longer collect E-Waste curbside. All Computers, Monitors, Laptops, Portable Computers, Televisions, Servers, Telecomm Equipment, Printers, Stereos, VCRs, DVDs, Cell Phones, Remotes, Etc. (anything with an electrical cord) must be dropped off at the NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP RECYCLING CENTER located at 2201 Heck Avenue, Neptune during the following hours:

Monday – Friday 8am – 7pm Saturday & Sunday 8am – 3pm

TVs & Computer Monitors If the (CRT) picture tube is not smashed and is still intact with all components, it will be accepted for disposal. Scrap parts from dismantled TVs / Monitors, Computers, etc. are not eligible for the Neptune Township E-Waste Recycling Program. NOTE: It is illegal to dismantle E-Waste for parts unless you are a NJDEP permitted Class D Recycling Facility. This policy change is taking place to protect our workers and the public from recycling thieves who are breaking into electronic items at the curb, and leaving behind what may be considered a hazardous waste. Please share this important information with your friends and neighbors.

If you are unable to drop off your e-waste for recycling, you may call

Neptune DPW at 732-775-8797 x602.

Latex Paint Recycling Drop off site Homeowners may bring latex paint ONLY (no combustible or flammable oil base paint) to the recycling center. All pint, quart, gallon and 5 gallon latex paint containers will be accepted, provided the factory label denotes the product as latex. Containers must be secure and non-leaking. Leaking paint will be rejected. This program is in co-operation with the Monmouth County household hazardous waste facility.

Spring Loose Leaf Collection in April and May If you missed the fall collection you have two chances in the spring to have them picked up. Loose leaf pickup is for leaves only. Do not mix other debris such as trash, limbs, brush, rocks, sticks, flowers, roots or plants in the leaf pile. Leaves must be separated from brush and are to be in the street (not bags).

Put leaves at the gutter line by Monday for pickup on the same week as your bulk & brush. Spring collection is based on your brush zone (A, B, C, D) and will be collected in April and May.

Please remember that leaves are never to be put in bags they are banned from the landfill and the Township could be fined for non-compliance.

Residential Grease Recycling This new program is offered to Neptune Township residents (no commercial)

Neptune Township’s Department of Public Works will accept your used cooking oil and grease to be disposed of and recycled. Contact DPW at 732-775-8797 x604 to arrange for a drop off appointment.

Remember that improper disposal of grease, fat, or cooking oil can cause sewers to back up

Important changes for battery recycling in Monmouth County

For many years The Township of Neptune has worked with Monmouth County to recycle common carbon-zinc and alkaline batteries (i.e., AAA, AA, C, D and 9 volt). This program will end immediately. These batteries should now be disposed with regular household and commercial trash. Why are these changes taking place? According to Monmouth County officials, when this program began, there were significant levels of toxic metals present in household batteries. Toxic metals have been reduced or eliminated in these common batteries the past ten years. In addition, the cost to recycle or dispose of these batteries continues to increase. Recently, and in re-sponse to the Federal Department of Transportation (USDOT) has implemented new transport rules mandating that each battery be individually bagged and / or terminals taped. Therefore, continuation of this household battery recycling program will become prohibitively expensive, at a time when the need for this segregation of these spent batteries has become almost academic.

Neptune will continue to recycle some types of batteries

The Township of Neptune will continue to accept rechargeable batteries and small ‘button batteries’. Rechargeable Batteries: The Township of Neptune will be participating in a program funded by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, (www.rbrc.org) who pays for the box, bags, shipping and recycling of the batteries. Residents place a rechargeable battery in a bag, and deposit the bagged battery into the cardboard collection box at the recycling center. Rechargeable batteries can be found in cellular and cordless phones, cordless power tools, laptop computers, PDA’s, remote control toys and other cordless products. Button Cell Batteries (miniature disc/coin sized): Will continue to be collected and shipped to the Monmouth County Hazardous Waste Facility. Button cell batteries can contain up to 25 milligrams of mercury per battery, and are considered a hazardous waste. Button cell batteries can be found in photo equipment, watches, hearing aids, watches and other electronic products. The Township of Neptune is removing all battery collection containers from all sites with the exception of the Recycling Center. The Neptune Township Recycling Center is located at the westernmost entrance to our Public Works Facility at 2201 Heck Ave. The hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Saturday & Sunday 8:00am – 3:00 pm. Not open on Township holidays. Neptune Township proof of residency must be presented to the inspector to enter the facility. The Neptune Public Works Department welcomes your questions, comments and suggestions. You can contact the Neptune Public Works Department at 732.775.8797 x604.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

TO STORMWATER POLLUTION

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Each time it rains, water washes over our streets, driveways, and yards picking up pollutants along the way and flowing into our storm drains. This runoff may contain pollutants such as motor oil, yard clippings, pet waste, litter, lawn chemi-cals, anti-freeze, or other toxins, which can pollute our water supply as well as clog pipes and culverts which can lead to flooding. Known as “Non-Point Source Pollution”, it is the largest threat to our waterways today. Sometimes pollutants are dumped directly into storm drains by neighbors who don’t know any better. Contrary to popular belief, our storm drains are not connected to treatment systems. Whatever enters the drain is discharged directly, untreated into local water-ways! HOW CAN YOU HELP? The storm drain inlets on your street are being marked with a colorful marker, with a pollution prevention message. You can help, by using the following tips to prevent pollution: • Make sure to properly dispose of leftover household chemicals, paints and automotive fluids. These leftover chemicals

should never be thrown away. Monmouth County residents should call the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Tin-ton Falls at 732-683-8686 to arrange an appointment, to drop off the material free of charge.

• Shop for nonhazardous, biodegradable and phosphorous-free household cleaning products. • Use fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides sparingly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use integrated pest man-

agement (IPM) methods to minimize chemical use. • Help keep trash and dirt off the street and out of the gutters. Keep trash cans closed to prevent trash from scattering. • Clean up after your pets. • Wash your car at a car wash facility and properly maintain your vehicle to prevent fluid leakage. • Spread the word about protecting our waterways from polluted runoff.

PICK UP SERVICES FOR USABLE GOODS & EYEGLASSES

The following organizations make regular pickups from homes and businesses in Monmouth County. Call to make arrangements for pickup of usable and resalable items. These organizations reserve the right to reject items in poor condition. Goodwill Industries (entire house contents)……………973-481-2300 Salvation Army (furniture pickup only)…………………..609-599-9801 Recirculation Technology Associates……………………732-363-0556 Rescue Mission of Trenton…………………………………609-695-1436 New Eyes for the Needy, a non - profit organization, accepts old eyeglasses for distribution to needy recipients in the U.S. and overseas. Glasses are used in two ways: Plas-tic - framed glasses are shipped overseas and reused. Metal frames are melted down, and the money made on the sale of the metals is used to pay for certificates that buy new glasses for people who need them in the United States. Hearing aids, watches and jewelry also are accepted. Glasses may be mailed to: New Eyes For The Needy, 549 Millburn Ave., Short Hills, N.J. 07078 Phone (973)-376-4903. Visit neweyesfortheneedy.org

Compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFLs are the new “going green” simple solution. The new bulbs use 75 percent less electricity than incan-descent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. However, there is a big problem with CFLs. The bulbs contain mercury. The Home Depot Rt. 66 Neptune is pleased to offer free in-store CFL bulb recycling. Just look for the signs and collection units in the store. Recycling of these bulbs will keep them out of our landfills and lessen the potential risks to both our water and air quality.

What Does My Refrigerator Have To Do With Clean Air?

You may discover that you are having difficulty getting rid of that old refrigerator or air conditioner. This is due to regulations implementing the Federal Clean Air Act. These regulations affect, among other things, the disposal of appliances (such as air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, and dehumidifiers) that contain refrigerants. The refrigerants in these appliances often are composed of CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons - often called by their brand name, (Freon) which, when released into the atmosphere, deplete the ozone layer. The regulations call for the recapturing of CFCs during recycling to prevent damage to the atmosphere. In 2008 Neptune DPW recycled 346 oz. of Freon from old appliances. You can ask the company where you bought your new appliance to take the old one. Otherwise, call or come into Neptune Township Public Works at 2201 Heck Ave. and set up an appointment to pick up your old appliance; the fee is $30.00.

All White Goods (metal appliances) are BANNED

from the Monmouth County Landfill.
