Spiritual watchfulness and alertness. “Watch, there-fore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42)
I learned something new last week, and I want to pass it along to you in case you didn’t know. We’ve taken the old cupboards out of the “sink room,” the room going into the altar from the hallway, and installed new cabinets where the altar servers can keep their robes. Now they have a proper place to hang their robes, which is good. As Boris Tartakoff and I pulled the old cupboards out, we found some interesting things that had fallen behind, including a church newsletter from June 1996. In it, Fr. Costas Pavlakos wrote about the relics contained in the altar of our Church. This is what he said:
“Saturday, June 1st is the feast day of Justin the Philosopher. This saint’s relics were placed in the altar table of our church during the consecration. I would like to share a brief history of the life of Justin the Philosopher … Justin convinced the Roman Emperor Antonius with the written word to stop persecuting Christians. In his search for wisdom, Justin studied the Stoics, the Peripatetics and the Pythagoreans. He finally came to agree with Plato more than the others until he met a monk who revealed to him the Holy Scriptures. He then came to the believe that following Jesus Christ and helping others to this end was the highest purpose in life. However, he would not allow himself to be baptized until he could refute the arguments of the idol worshippers against the Christians. When he witnessed the martyrdom of several saints, he wrote his first apologia to the emperor which ended those persecutions. He saved lives in Asia by taking that decree there. He also convinced the next emperor, Marcus Aurelius, that Christians seek only souls and not lands to conquer. However, he was maligned by a pagan philosopher, Crescents, whom he had often battered in debates and never had a chance to present his apologia that challenged pagan philosophy. Crescents poisoned Justin while he was still in prison.”
Every church altar should have relics, but, well, some don’t. I thought that might be the case with our altar here at St. Sophia’s, but this answers the question. Our altar does have relics, the relics of a martyr from 166 AD. Along with the relics in our reliquary on the left side of the solea, now we have an additional blessing through the physical presence of this early and wise saint of the Church, Justin the Philosopher. As you stand before the throne of our Lord and Savior, St. Justin, pray to him for our community and for our souls! Your affectionate servant, Father David

VETERANS PLAQUE
In keeping with our past practice of honoring our veterans, we ask that any parishioners who have veterans in their families let us know who they are so they can be honored on our veterans plaque. Please do so by dropping off a copy of your veterans DD214 to the church office. If you or your family members name(s) are already on the current plaque, then you don't need to do anything. If you have any questions, please see Peter Manolakos, Parish Council President in church. Thank you.

Dear Parish,
They're back! On October 21 the scaffolding for the iconographers will go up in the nave. The iconographers are scheduled to begin work on November 5. The nave will be closed for services from approximately October 27 to November 30. All services during that time will be held either in the gym or in the chapel.
For those who have supported the iconography project, its completion is an exciting and welcoming event. This canopy of saints and holy events that looks down upon us as we pray and give glory to God will, for many, enhance the liturgical experience. By design, that experience engages all of our senses. Our icons help us as sensual beings to negotiate the road to Noesis, our attempt to become closer to God. To all of who believed in and supported this project, many thanks.
On a different but also very important note, I must report to you that the Meet and Greet held in September was a great success. Most of the organizations and ministries were able to recruit new participants to their cause. This type of renewed engagement belies what I hope is a new energy that seems to be percolating in the church. Parishioners are stepping up, leaders seem to be reinvigorated, looking to enhance the experiences of their groups. The youth groups all have ambitious schedules. The adult groups are increasing their membership. And, what is no small thing, people are having fun. Our Lord admonishes us to love one another. When love motivates us in our organizations and ministries, these activities also help us to negotiate the road to Noesis.
And from Noesis we go to the Parish Data System. All of you on the Parish email list received an email asking you to respond and update your personal data for our records in church office. Please take the time to do this as soon as you can. For those of you who are not online, the Parish Council will assist you to complete this task during coffee hour after Sunday Liturgy.
The fall General Assembly meeting will take place (if there is a quorum so please show up) on October 27. If you are thinking of running for the council but have questions about the duties, responsibilities, and time commitment, please feel free to contact me or see me at the coffee hour. I will be happy to sit down with you to fill you in. The Parish Council elections will be held on Stewardship Sunday, November 10th.
Once again the year flies by. We are in the final quarter. Please make sure that your stewardship obligations are up to date. This is especially true for anyone who wants to run for the Parish Council. Thanks to all who are devoted to Saint Sophia's. You are the lifeblood of the Parish. Yours in Christ, Peter Manolakos Parish Council President

STEWARDSHIP
The Stewardship Committee has, with the approval of Father David and the Parish Council, adopted the following mission statement:
"To foster a culture of faithful giving of parishioners' time, talent, and treasure in order to preserve our inheritance, maintain our
facility, staff, ministries, and programs so that we insure the long- term flourishing of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church.”
We adopted this mission statement and will constantly refer to it so that we do not lose sight of our task. Clearly the goals expressed by this statement are the goals that we all have for St. Sophia's. We can achieve them only by embracing them and working together.
On another note, please do not forget that to be a member in good standing for the General Assembly meeting, you must have made a 2018 pledge (signed pledge card) and fully fulfilled that pledge by the end of 2018 for the year 2018, and have submitted a signed pledge card for 2019. Anyone running for the Parish Council make sure your Stewardship obligations are up to date.
Thanks to all of you who generously give time, talent, and treasure to our community . It is our pleasure to join with you in helping St. Sophia's to flourish.
The Stewardship Committee

New Parish Data System Implementation Your Response is Needed for this Transition
We are well in the process of transitioning to our new Parish Data System that will more efficiently manage information on each parishioner of our church. To those that have already submitted a family registration form, we thank you for taking the time to enhance our data system.
At some point last month, you should have received an email with a link to simply review your family's information and update accordingly. If you did not receive that email, there are a few ways to update your information. There is an online link to the family registration form on the church website, http://www.stsophias.org/forms/registration-form. You may also contact Chris Shiomos at [email protected] for that missing email or stop by our registration booth on Sundays during coffee hour to complete the form.
For those submissions that are received before October 13th, you will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate for the Philo-Sophia Bookstore. So, don't delay! Thank you in advance for your participation

UPDATE ON PHILOPTOCHOS CHARITY CAMPAIGN FOR ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN PRISON MINISTRY
We've had a very positive response from the congregation on this collection for Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry. Will you help us make our goal of $1,000 dollars? You still have two Sundays in October to contribute. Final collection is Sunday, October 13. Remember, we may not be able to visit a prisoner but we can all certainly support an organization that sees the face of Christ in the incarcerated, affirms their dignity and enlightens their future. AHEPA News Chapter #37 Syracuse, NY
Greetings AHEPANS and Parishioners. As we move forward with our events, we are looking to another successful year. We met and worked hard, exchanged ideas and planned our events during the summer meetings in June, July, and August and now we can enjoy the fruits of our labors. We thank you for the sacrifices you are making, out of your busy lives and the continued support you give to our AHEPA Chapter 37, to our Parish and our community. We have accomplished a lot with the great teamwork existing in our organization. Our AHEPA Home is a model as to how a project of its’ kind should be run. Our AHEPA 37 Syracuse Foundation is supporting many worthwhile projects for needy people in our community. Our chapter has an active role in the AHEPA District 6 (N.Y. State) and at the National Level. We have contributed for the aide of the fires in Attica –Greece, contributed for the support of the Greek Independence Day Parade in N.Y. City, provided, support/attended conferences at St. Basil’s Academy, and continuing the growth of our scholarship fund which benefits our parish youth, and honoring all veterans by various programs. We can stop here because the list can go on and on. You and your families have done it and continue doing. We preserve the values of our Orthodox Faith and Hellenism. Our membership growth since April 2019 is at 50%, where other organizations have negative growth or are at a standstill. There is no limit of what we can accomplish as we continue working together for a common cause. You are encouraged to attend our Initiation Luncheon Event on October 19th Saturday 1:00 pm at the lower level of our church. At that time we will have the privilege to have with us visitors from various N.Y. chapters, distinguished guests such as George Pappis - Past President Albany chapter, Mike Koutsourades - President Albany chapter, Demi Pamboukes -Past Governor District 6, Chris Pappis - District 6 Secretary, Lou Katsos -District 6 Governor, and Thomas Dushas -Supreme Governor of region 3. This is more than a regular initiation meeting, as we will have the honor of having our chapter acting as host of a Regional AHEPA Meeting. Please make your reservations to attend by contacting me by October I, 2019 by phone, text, or e-mail. Take the time to read the letter of yours truly and Brother Lou Katsos, AHEPA D6 Governor, which went out to the entire district, so you can realize the important role of our chapter. Thanks to you is working. Sincerely, Mike Labatos, President AHEPA Chapter 37 315-427-7628 [email protected]

Brothers please mark your calendars for an upcoming AHEPA Ritual of Initiation by AHEPA Chapter 37 that as with all Ritual Initiation events, we consider very important. To the extent that both I and Brothers Tom Dushas Region 3 SG., Demi Pamboukes D6 PG., and Chris Pappis D6 Sec. will be in attendance and as distance at times keeps us from meeting more often we ask that the other Chapter Officers and members, particularly from the region attend, if it works with your schedule. After the Initiation and lunch, Brother Tom and I would like to have a brief discussion with those in attendance on the latest relating to AHEPA, Regional District 3 and the District 6 initiatives we are taking, as well as upcoming D6 events. Enclosed please find Brother Michael Labatos’, President of AHEPA Chapter 37, invitation to Chapter 37’s upcoming Ritual of Initiation.
