The 2015 Nepal earthquake occurred at 11:56 NST on 25 April with a moment magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). Its epicenter lay in Barpak village of Gorkha district and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 15 km (9.3 mi).

The earthquake killed more than 7,000 and injured more than twice as many, as of 1 May 2015. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Sushil Koirala, has said that the number could reach 10,000.

It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. Some casualties have also been reported in the adjoining areas of India, China, and Bangladesh.

Hundreds of thousands of houses were destroyed rendering people homeless with entire villages flattened, across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.

Acces: Good access roads.

Main activity: Agricultural and livestock. Subsistence production.

Percent of households affected: 100%

Water supply: Not affected

Animal losses: About a hundred among goats, cows, buffaloes and chickens.

Access to Medical Center: 5Km.

Polution: No signs of contamination of any kind are recorded.

Harvest: No crop losses are recorded.

Sanitation: The operation of sanitation and waste disposal remains the

same as before the earthquakes.

Medical care: No medicines needed.

Education: School closed for a month.

Electricity: No power supply.

Population: 3 people died and about 10 people injured.

Cooking utensils: No registration of cookware needed.

At the visited area the houses are built of adobe, stone and wood. After the earthquake these constructions became very unsafe to live in, so the citizens of the village have constructed temporary shelters with plastic ropes and bamboo to avoid the risk of landslides and to protect themselves from wind, sun and rain. Most of the population is currently living in tents that are set up according to the availability of materials received by donations.Animals have also been displaced from their stables to keep them safe. Plastics and ropes are used for safekeeping.

The main need in the area is to provide sufficient material for the construction of tents for all families.

Murali Banjyag is a mountainous area where the main activity is agricultural and livestock. While there have been no major losses in crops and livestock, due to the absence of electricity service, families are not able to process the food stock they own.

Therefore the provision of food to families is necessary, until the system power is resumed.

IMpaCt

The estimated time of housing reconstruction is uncertain. To build new houses it is necessary to wait until the stabilization of seismic quakes and ground, and also until the rainy season ends.Meanwhile citizens should live in tents or if its possible evacuate unsafe cities that are close to the earthquake epicentre. Nepal needs long-term help.
