SENIOR COMPOSER’S WORKSHOP WITH GARETH FARR

Gareth Farr and when I slept with the Steinway, By Georgia Griffiths Yr11

Gareth Farr, internationally acclaimed composer, visited school and was absolutely inspiring. He visited on the 27th of May and group of senior Music students were lucky enough to have some questions answered about composition. He is very good at telling a story and it shows through his music. His answers to the questions were unique, with many stories about his other compositions, but mainly he concentrated on his latest “Ripple Effect”.

For those who don’t know about Gareth and his new piece “Ripple Effect”, it was donated to the Nelson School of Music as part of a fundraising event ‘Sleeping with the Steinway’. This composition’s premier performance was at midnight during the pianothon that took place for 24 hours. ‘Ripple Effect’ was performed twice with standing ovations, so the late night was worth it. It was amazing and, better yet, it was performed by Farr Out who are a group of students; Helena Odinot, Penelope Smith, Gracie Lewis, Hazel Ray, Maya Speers, Matthew Praat and Ryah Blakemore. The composition was astonishing with its use of historical hand bells. Gareth is a percussionist and the composition used them really well. We would all like to thank Gareth for such an encouraging and engaging talk and for his generosity in supporting the Nelson School of Music.

JAZZ BAND Mikayla Borlase, Year 13

BIG SING REGIONALS IN THE NEW ASB THEATRE IN BLENHEIM

On the 19th of June, after two terms of being at school at 8am twice a week, Jazz Band was ready with three pieces for the Nelson youth a jazz competition. The past two terms held much stress, amusement and wrong notes; with 20 girls working together in the morning it took a lot of hard work but it was worth it. All of us ended up with more skills, friends and memories.

We spent those mornings working on: “In Theses Shoes” by Kirsty MacColl, “Son of a Preacher Man” as performed by Nancy Wilson, and “Mercy” by Duffy. Dynamics, dance moves, and articulation gave our pieces the life and energy needed to make our performance come to life this year. For our fifth year in a row at the Nelson competition we decided to play for fun rather than play competitively with this decision leading to the interesting introduction of rapping. Needless to say this year’s competition was one like no other. At 10:30 am on Sunday we went for an improvisation workshop that was organised by the Nelson Jazz Club (along with the competition itself ). Our improvisers - Carys Collins and Zoe Palmer on Saxophone, Emily Reilly on Trumpet, Ngaire Wotherspoon on Trombone and Zoe Sharpe on Bass all went really well. Our performance was soulful and went off without a hitch. Every group did really well and we were proud to end up with our amazing singers (Emma Common and Gemma Christall) as well as our first trombone (Ngaire Wotherspoon) gaining Highly Commended, and getting first place in the Big Band section.

Overall the day was really enjoyable and a great success and we will never forget all the treble we went through to get there or the good times we had. We hope our work showed what type of musicians Nelson College for Girls has and the pride we have for our school. We can’t thank the Nelson Jazz Club enough for all the work that went in to the day and for flying a tutor up from Christchurch to coach us in improvisation.

PINK RIBBON BREAKFAST

P I N K R I B B O N B R E A K F A S T

A few weeks ago on June 10th the school’s Social Services Committee organised its first ever Pink Ribbon Breakfast. The idea came about through seeing numerous advertisements on television about Pink Ribbon Breakfasts, and the committee decided it would be a new and exciting challenge to take on.

The event was a huge success and raised over $1,100 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. During the breakfast, guests were treated to delicious food, and guest speaker Mayor Rachel Reese, whom spoke brilliantly about empowering women within the world.

Thank you to everyone from the school and wider community who attended. Due to the overwhelming support and appreciation for the event, it is hoped that the breakfast will become a yearly event. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous sponsors, whom without the breakfast would not have been possible.

We are extremely grateful to:

Also a big thank you to Tozzetti for making the muffins and the Tasty Tucker Bakery for the croissants which were provided at discounted prices.

Bula vinaka, Malo eleli, Gudei, Talofa, Kia orana, Fakalofa iahi atu, Kia ora, Welcome:

We have formed a new Pasifika group in NCG called ‘Nesian Va’ine’ and we would like to formerly introduce ourselves to the community of NCG. We started a few weeks ago and we meet every Wednesday lunchtime in Room 24 to discuss topics and interests we have. So far we have discussed things such as leadership roles, competitions and more involvement in school events to educate and inform everyone the ways of our cultures.

Our group has a variety of different cultures from the Polynesian Oceans such as Samoan, Tongan, Niuean, Cook Islands and Fijian. We have decided on the name ‘Nesian Va’ine’ as we are known as Poly’nesian’, Mela’nesian’and Micro’nesian’; then we decided to translate one of our

words into one of our languages to provide an authentic sound and unique name. ‘Va’ine’ is Cook Island for ‘girls’ which, of course, we are. Our newest venture is to set up a Homework Club for Term 3 and 4. Here students can come and do their school work with a teacher supervising. All are welcome! It will run every Thursday in Room 24 from 3.30 until 5.00pm each week.

As a group we would like to welcome any new members who would like to join Nesian Va’ine as we are open to new ideas and would love to have more members. Term 3 will be our most productive term as we are excited to get things going. Thanks to Mrs Watson, Mrs Dyson and Mr O’Leary who have supported us so far.

PTA NEWS

Your PTA Committee is in full swing organising the 5th Annual Spring Fashion Fling – our main fundraising event for the year. It’s always a great night, but this year we have some new surprises in store for you.

This event is all about friends, food, fashion and fun. So even if fashion isn’t your ‘thing’ – you’re sure to have a lovely night out.

You’ll be greeted by the feeling of spring as you enter a hall filled with flowers and fresh greenery. Linen-covered tables with favours for guests await. Platters of delicious food provided by Prego/Comida are ready for noshing. And music and conversation fill the room… and all of this before the show even begins.

Join us! Buy a ticket for yourself, or organise a table and bring along your favourites. Tickets go on sale Monday, the 25th of July, from the Nelson College for Girls Finance Office (right next to reception – it’s easy to find). We’ve worked hard to make this a community, not just a College, event – so we hope you’ll invite friends, colleagues and family far and wide to come along.

Don’t miss out. Put the date in your diary now and buy your tickets early. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUCCESS OF MARKET DAY

Our 2016 enterprise class over the last 2 terms have been designing a business of their choice. We all had to identify a gap in the market and create a business that fits into the slot.

We then began the process of bring our business to life. We did this by following a process of listing the strengths and weaknesses of our product/business. The next step to creating our own business was to follow structural brief and curtain guidelines to produce a business plan that would supply us with six credits. We then were given the opportunity to present our finished product at Dragons’ Den. This is where a variety of judges provide feedback and input about a presentation we created for our product prior to the event.

Market day was an event where we were able to sell our product to the students of NCG. This being a huge success with our products selling out. Over these two terms our class has benefitted from this course as we have learnt how to structure a business and communicate well with potential business partners.
