Introduction

Nelson Granite carried out a bulk sampling program for granite

dimension stone on claim K-1149878 on their Muskeg River Property.

The work was done during the months of January and February. Blocks

were removed from the property under approval to take a bulk sample

and aggregate permit AP-20269.

Location and Access

The Muskeg River Property is located 34.7 kilometers north and

17 kilometers east of the City of Kenora.

Kenora K-1149878

UTM: 393500 mE Zone 15 UTM: 410500 mE Zone 15

5514000 mN 5548700 mN

Access to the claim group is via the Jones Road from the

junction of the Kenora Bypass Hwy. 17 to the Lount Lake Road a

distance of 40 kilometers. The Jones Road is a hard surfaced

secondary highway. The Lount Lake Road, an all weather gravel road

proceeds northwest from the Jones Road at a point 3.5 kilometers

northeast of the CNR. siding at Jones. The junction of the Palin

Granite Road is located by proceeding northwest on the Lount Lake

Road a distance of approximately 18 kilometers. Approximately 2.6

kilometers west of this junction, the Palin Road crosses the Muskeg

River, and the road into the Muskeg River Property is on the south

side immediately after crossing the river.

Geology

The deposit is part of the Lount Lake Batholith which covers2 ah area of 2058 Km and is approximately elliptical in plan. It is a

syntectonic to late tectonic pluton composed predominantely of

massive porphyritic granodiorite and porphyritic quartz monzonite

(Breaks et al. 1978). In general, the stone consists of potassic

feldspar (microcline) phenocrysts in a matrix of plagiosclase,

potassic feldspar, quartz and biotite. The colour of the stone seems

to be determined by the colour and abundance of feldspar phenocrysts,

as well as the mafic mineral content of the matrix. (Kennedy and

Sherlock 1987)

The stone at the Muskeg River quarry site is a brown megacrystic

granite. Brown potassic feldspar phenocrysts up to 5 centimeters

long (in places longer) in a medium grained matrix make up approximately

of the stone. The medium grained matrix makes up the remaining

15% glassy quartz, lf^ white plagioclase feldspar and 15!^ black

minerals (hornblend and biotite) visual estimate.

Texturally the granite is similar to the Pine Green and Crystal

Gold granite quarried by Nelson Granite at Forgotten Lake and formerly

Palin Granite at a location l kilometer west of the Muskeg River

quarry site. The main difference is in the colour of the phenocrysts,

brown instead of green or yellow.

On the weathered surface the phenocrysts look light pink in a

light grey matrix and there is some weathering related discolouration

near surface. Wide spaced (9-14 meters) vertical joints strike

predominantly 70 0 . During test quarrying a steep dipping sub-horizontal

joint was encountered. This joint dips 16 0 from horizontal or 18% in

a northwest direction. At the northwest limit of the quarry excavation

the sheet is unfractured and 5 meters thick. Plate l below

- 8 -

Previous WorkThe area was mapped at reconnaissance scale by Breaks et al. (1978)

Nelson Granite did some prospecting and sample drilling (4 shallow

holes) in the eastern part of the property 1996 and 1997. This work

was not filed for assessment credit. In the area of the test quarry

there was no previous work done to determine the quarry potential

of the deposit.

Purpose of the 1999 Program

The purpose of the 1999 Bulk Sample program was:1) To determine the colour and texture of the deposit.2) To determine the nature and distribution of defects.3) To assess the quarry potential of the deposit.4) To obtain sufficient material for the production of samples and

an initial market evaluation.

Equipment UsedA four man quarrying team carried out the removal of the bulk

sample using the following equipment; a Dresser 560 rubber tired

front end loader with rock work attachments (rock forks, tipping

boom, and bucket), two self propelled Tammrock Commando hydraulic

rock drills, a Lutz channelling torch and Le Roi air compressor,

various hand tools including wedges and shims, sledge hammer etc., K-pipe explosives, 50 grain detonating cord and safety fuses.

1999 Bulk Sample ProgramSixty blocks were removed in this bulk sample. Twenty blocks

that remain on site are second grade because of colour variation

associated with surface weathering and other defects. Forty

commercial quality blocks yielding 6091 cubic feet and weighing 618 tonnes were shipped to our stockpile yard in Vermilion Bay. These blocks varied in size but most were of dimensions suitable for gang saws. One block was shipped to Ancor Granite in Montreal

for cutting into tile samples. These were sent to many of our

customers in North America Europe and Asia.

ResultsBelow the level affected by surface weathering the granite

appears to be uniform in texture and colour. Defects encountered

during quarrying include odd pegmatite patches and surface

discolouration. Large blocks of good quality can be obtained from

this site. Joints encountered were very wide spaced which is promising for good recoveries.

Bringing a new granite onto the market is a time consuming and costly process. Interest in this granite has been slowly

building. The company is currently marketing it under the name "Shepody" with initial sales to date to two fabricators in Quebec and one in British Columbia. The material is suitable as an architectural stone and for tiles and counter tops. Nelson Granite has prepared a sales brocher which includes an insert showing the

material. Plate 4.

Conclusions

The results of test quarrying were successful and the company

is confident that a long term commercial granite quarry operation

can be conducted on the Muskeg River Property. Shepody is the

latest addition to Nelson Granites current palette of six colours.

SHEPODYThis large grained granite is medium to light brown in colour with a black matrix. Shepody makes an excellent building, tile or

counter top granite plus it looks exceptional in a flamed finish. The granite can be quarried in large gangsaw blocks at very reasonable prices.
