It’s pick-your-own strawberry time at Seamans’ Orchard in Roseland. The recipe for summer begins on pg. 10.

27perfect prickThis won’t hurt a bit.

28sweatequityJack’s been getting his hands dirty.

10strawberry fieldsSeamans’ got ‘em.

My cups are better than mommy and daddy’s cups.

They put coffee in their cups to stay awake. I don’t need coffee to stay awake. I’m pretty good at staying awake on my own.

Mommy and daddy’s cups take up a lot of space when they’re put away. Mine are stackable. They go from big to small, like those little Russian dolls.

My dad says he’s always Russian. Russian to the store. Russian to a story. Always Russian to go some-where.

He should stop being Russian and be more American so he can play with my cups.

My favorite one is the green mon-ster cup. I can chew on his eyes. If I chewed on Jerky’s eyes, that would hurt. Jerky is not a cup. He is a dog.

Dogs don’t play with cups. They play with things in the grass. A dead frog is a thing in the grass. Mommy doesn’t want me to play with that. She wants me to play with my cups.

My cups float in the water. My rubber duck floats in the water. I can chew on the duck but the cups tastes better. I am better friends with my cups.

These days, just about everything I touch goes into my mouth. I have two teeth in my mouth and 9 out of 10

housewives agree: I am getting more teeth.

At some point, I’ll have all the teeth I need and I won’t have to chew my cups. But I can save them for later. It’s my understanding boxers and some old people have teeth miss-ing. If they had my cups, they could chew on them and grow more teeth.

Mommy tells me one day my baby teeth will fall out and the tooth fairy will come and bring me money. 32 teeth is a lot of money!

Enjoy!Adam Thomas Stafford

Mas de Daumas Gassac,“The Grand Cru of the Midi” Part I

Like Château Musar from Leba-non and Domaine de Trevallon in Provence, Mas de Daumas Gassac is one of those wines that moves me to fits of passion, those finer moments that can prove embarrassing to loved ones. And while I’m not alone in my enthusiasm (“One of the ten best wines in the world” Michael Broadbent, “A Lafite in Languedoc” Gaullt & Millau, “Exceptional” R. Parker), I can trace it back to the earliest bottling, tasted in Paris.

The history of the Gassac valley goes back to 780 A.D. when St. Benoit d’Aniane, one of Charlemagne’s counselors, created the fist vineyard. In 1992 on a pilgrimage with my mother to St-Guilhem-le-Desert, a beautiful example of romasque architecture, I drove through Aniane for the first time and felt the magic of the Gassac Valley.

Situated in the Languedoc, a region known more for the quantity of its wine than for quality, Daumas Gas-sac has in the short thirty years it’s been producing become a kind of cult wine. But it was the successful protest

against Robert Mondavi, chronicled in the movie Mondo Vino that has more recently won Aimé Guibert recogni-tion to those outside the wine world. Aimé, originally a glove maker, and his wife Veronique bought the old “mas” or farmhouse in 1970 with no idea what to plant. Both loved the earth and thought about planting olive trees or corn—that is until their friend Henri Enjalbert, professor of Geology at Bor-deaux University, visited. When he left, the Guiberts knew they had a unique terroir capable of producing outstand-ing wine, but Henri joked it’d take two hundred years to be accepted as such. Not quite. The uniqueness of the terroir is due to a rare and unexplained powder-fine glacial soil, combined with a cool micro-climate, an anomaly in the hot Languedoc but the result of the nearby Gassac river, underground springs and the influence of the moun-tains and sea.

Mas de Daumas Gassac uses organic viticulture practices, but like many vineyards in France doesn’t bother with certification. Since the land had been farmed naturally (organically) for thou-sands of years, the Guiberts continued the tradition understanding that organic

farming is about nurturing the soil that feeds the crops that feed you.

A couple months ago I was invited to have lunch with Samuel Guibert. Thinking I was to be dining with Aimé I was in another fit of passion, which was only slightly subdued when I found out it was Samuel, Aimé’s very charming and very handsome son. Samuel has the same ardor as his father but with a twist of modernity that bodes well for this traditional wine in today’s market.

Guilhem, Moulin de Gassac - the Guilhem wines offer the same philoso-phy of farming small hillside sites natu-rally and organically, but don’t have the huge Mas de Daumas Gassac price tags. From 25 to 50 year-old vines, but lighter than Mas de Daumas Gassac these are incredible values for everyday drinking wines. $12.99 but bring in this article and receive for $10.99. We also stock the more expensive Mas de Daumas Gassac.

1 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 009

And if you can’t have summer without straw-berries, then it’s pretty safe to say you can’t have strawberries (around here) without the Seamans.

Seamans’ Orchard, which is located out on Dark Hollow Road in Roseland, has been growing strawberries since 2003. Each fall, workers plant rows and rows of strawberries and each May, they open their fields to local kids of all ages.

The orchard, in addition to apples and a few pumpkins in the fall as well as beef cattle, has pick-your-own and pre-picked berries upon re-quest.

Strawberries are very susceptible to frost, said planter Carter Parr, but Seaman’s was ready for the slew of recent Nelson County mid-May frosts. The Roseland strawberries are planted each year on raised beds to help protect them from Mother Nature’s cold snaps.

Richard Seaman, a fourth generation farmer, has been running (or running around) Seaman’s Orchard since he was just a tot. He and his brother,

Eddie, can still remember when their mother and her father were alive running the orchards.

But the strawberries, they’re a new venture.“Well the strawberries have only been here a

few years,” said Richard. “This young man bring-ing those berries in, he’s the one that started all the strawberries.”

And that young man was Carter Parr, Richard’s nephew. He’s involved daily with the operations of the orchard, but just started planting strawberries about a half dozen years ago.

Even though his uncle “blames” him for the ber-ries, Carter said it’s not exactly his fault.

“Well, not necessarily,” he said. “We [were] just looking to diversify a little bit and we just thought maybe strawberries would be a good fit for us.”

And according to Carter, the berries have been working pretty well.

They originally picked strawberries because the quick return on the investment.

“With other plants, it’ll take you a couple years

before you get something out of them,” Carter ex-plained. “You can get you something off [strawber-ries] quicker.”

The berries that were picked last month, for example, were just planted in September.

He’s been working with apple trees all his life, but Carter said that even though strawberries are new to the farm, he can get a little frustrated with them – but not so much so that they won’t be around for the public next year.

“We get tired of this after a while and then look forward to planting them in the fall again,” he said, adding that he liked to see happy people picking berries in the spring.

And as for that shortcake recipe? Don’t bother asking Carter.

“They’ve got the recipes up there, but I don’t know if they’re family secrets,” he said. After all, Seaman’s Orchard has only been working with the red berries for a few years.

But apple recipes? Well, that’s another story. NCL

Dr. Michael Sherwood cannot fly, but that doesn’t make him any less of a hero to his pa-tients.

Dr. Sherwood was named as this year’s Nelson County Hero in Healthcare and Peggy Whitehead, the executive director of the Blue Ridge Medical Center, said that his volunteer dentistry isn’t the only thing that makes him so special.

“He has an amazing gift for calming people’s nerves when they’re in there,” she said. “Because many of the people are pretty afraid of the dentist because they’re coming in with serious issues.”

One of Dr. Sherwood’s recent patients was pretty anxious about her dental work but she said it wasn’t in any way related to Dr. Sherwood, she was just nervous about getting that tooth ex-tracted.

“He talks to you the whole time,” said Krista Monahan. “He explains what he’s doing. He does a great job.”

Dr. Sherwood doesn’t consider himself a hero, though.

“I sure look forward to coming in here in the morning and it’s a very satisfying part of my life,” said the dentist. “And heroes aren’t selfish.” NCL

Real estate is certainly a hot topic these days. Everyone seems to have a story to tell and advice to offer. With so much information circulating around, it can be hard for a prospec-tive buyer to glean the so called “gold-en nuggets” of information. In reality, many buyers get bogged down with half-truths and myths that can severely impede the purchase process. If you are thinking about buying a home in the current market, avoid falling for these common misconceptions.

Myth: You don’t need a real estate agent; Truth: While good information can be acquired from friends, books, and the internet, it can not replace the wealth of knowledge of an experienced professional. A buyer’s agent, looking out for your best interest, can negotiate for you and guide you through the ins and outs of working with sellers, lenders, apprais-ers, attorneys, and inspectors.

Myth: You won’t be able to get financing; Truth: The “everybody

buys” approach to lending is a thing of the past. However, while money is harder to get, it is not impossible to secure financing. There are even loan programs available for borrowers with less than perfect credit and little to no downpayment. For example, one USDA loan program allows seller paid closing costs and the ability for the purchaser to finance 102% of the property’s appraised value. Before starting the home search, get pre-ap-proved!

Myth: Foreclosures offer the best deal; Truth: Foreclosures are becom-ing more readily available and can be a great investment option for many buyers. However, do not assume that every foreclosure will reflect a good deal. Buyers need to be aware that foreclosures and/or banked owned properties will most likely be sold in as-is condition. When it comes to foreclosures “what you see is what you get and what you don’t see is what you get”. Hence, prior to mak-

ing an offer, get a market analysis and a home inspection. If the property will cost you a fortune to repair or renovate than the deal may not be so stellar.

Myth: If something appears on the inspection report, the seller has to fix it; Truth: Having a home inspection contingency allows the purchaser to have an inspection to determine the condition of the home. Based on the report, the buyer can make a repair request. The seller has the option to accept, deny, or negotiate the requested items. If the seller does reject or renegotiate the repairs, than the purchaser can decide to accept the last offer of repairs, or if the repairs exceed what the purchaser feels is acceptable, the purchaser can elect to terminate the contract.

Myth: The longer a house is on the market, the more you can negotiate; Truth: In some cases a high days on market (DOM) may mean that a seller is hungry for an offer.

However, every seller is not desperate. Many sellers can wait it out and will not just “give” their house away. Get your agent to provide a market analy-sis so that you can better determine an appropriate market-driven offer price.

Myth: You should not buy until prices hit the bottom; Truth: You can miss out on a good opportunity by being a “wait-watcher”. By the time you figure out that home prices are at the bottom, so has every other buyer. When you hop off the fence, others will follow, thus driving prices back up again.

Now that these home buying myths have been demystified, you can launch your home search with more confidence!

It’s safe to say that on a day-to-day basis, Marie Kelly avoids needles, but acupuncture is a completely different story.

For starters, it doesn’t hurt.“Certain places you don’t feel and certain places

you feel a needle but just for a minute,” she described. “And certain places I feel heat going in through the body.”

Nelson County native Lucy Larsen, Marie’s acupuncturist, first experienced acupuncture as a student at Piedmont Virginia Community College. A guest speaker in her Eastern Thinking class stuck one acupuncture needle in her left leg to relieve a stiffness in Lucy’s right shoulder.

“It was indescribable,” she remembered. “It was a throbbing, heavy sensation, but energies were moving

throughout my leg and then a couple seconds later I feel up to my shoulder and it’s totally loose and felt so much better.”

Marie was first treated back when Lucy was still learning the craft. Even after two surgeries, Marie was suffering lower back pain and came to Lucy for help.

“And it was incredible,” she said. “It made a big difference.” NCL

JUNE 009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 1

“[The plant] seemed like an interesting business to get into.”

Get into it he did, because the plant, which is jammed into a hillside along the river, has been trans-formed since the Shenandoah Valley native bought the property (once the site of a wood mill) in 2005.

“It was a mess when I got it,” he said. “You couldn’t even tell the canal was here because the trees were 40 feet tall.”

But much of the needed work was understand-able because the plant, completed in 1921 by the Alberene Soapstone Company in Schuyler, hadn’t generated a watt since the mid 1990s, when it was shuttered after a previous owner, who ran it since the late 1970s, sold it.

Located in the Johnson Hollow Road area of Schuyler, the plant uses a canal to divert part of the river’s fl ow toward a powerhouse where the water generates electricity before continuing downstream.

And in the last few months - as the river fi lled with spring rains - power production has stayed steady.

“We’re completely hostage to the rainfall,” he said. “In the summer the plant [under previous owners] shut down for two or three months because there’s not enough water in the river to keep it running.”

Mike Beasley, of Schuyler, who oversaw a nearby water treatment plant and who retired last year from the Nelson County Service Authority, remembers several times when there was too much water.

Beasley helped run the plant during the early 1960s, but recalls when Hurricane Camille came through Nelson County in 1969 and fl ooded the Rockfi sh, knocking the power plant offl ine, in addition to devastating a second hydro plant that operated less than two miles downstream. It was the charge coming from both plants, Beasley said, that for years gave power to the soapstone operation and almost 200 homes in Schuyler.

“Me and a friend of mine, we cut the trees off the top of that thing with chainsaws,” Beasley said of Camille’s damage to the powerhouse, which towers roughly 75 feet over the river.

It may be, in part, the plant’s soapstone physique that’s kept it standing, but Eggleston said he’s hop-ing to fi nd a new owner who can keep it producing power. Listed with a $400,000 price tag, Eggleston said he’s fi elded roughly 30 inquiries about it since putting it on the market several months ago. That price tag includes a nearby dam built in 1899, 12 acres and a hasn’t-been-lived-in-for-a-while house

located on a hillside above the powerhouse.“There’s a lot of interest in hydro electric power

plants, and renewable energy now, so I’ve gotten a lot of calls,” he said. Including an inquiry from the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Colleen, which buys the power Eggleston’s plant produces.

Joseph Key, CVEC’s engineering services direc-tor, said he doesn’t know of any other hydro plant

“I love water, I’ve always been interested in water,” Eggleston, an environmental engineer, said.

operating in the CVEC’s 14-county coverage area and that the cooperative is interested in adding re-newable energies to its portfolio. Key said in today’s economy building small plants like Eggleston’s would likely be too expensive, and would require jumping too many environmental hurdles, to be worth the investment.

But Eggleston, who recently moved from Crozet

to Boston, Mass., said he’s enjoyed the renovation, which according to a Web site dedicated to the plant is projected to produce annual revenue of roughly $60,000. That fi gures moves to roughly $77,000 an-nually if a second generator is installed.

“I will defi nitely miss it, it’s a beautiful spot to work,” Eggleston said. “And it’s nice to feel like you’re doing something good for the environ-ment.” NCL

Propagation 101

Have you ever found yourself in a park, botanical garden or even your neighbor’s yard and wanted to grab a cutting because you covet one particular plant that you have seen? Don’t worry, you are not alone. This is a common everyday occurrence in the nursery business. The key is to finish the job – to actually get the plant home without damaging it and process it so that you end up with a younger version of its parent plant. Believe it or not, it is not hard – you just have to follow some basic steps.

You will need a number of things in order to pull this off successfully – a healthy, disease free mother plant, IBA or rooting hormone (talc or liquid), clean sharp pruners, plastic Zip-Loc bags, bedding plant mix (or any mix that has those white little prills in it called Perlite), tray or cell pack, Osmocote and a cold-frame.

Most softwood cuttings should be taken in the 1st to 3rd week in June once the new growth has begun to strengthen up a bit but not totally harden off. Your cutting, which should be taken from this year’s growth, should be around 6 inches in length. Once taken just drop it

into your Zip-Loc bag that has a little moisture in it and then preferably into a cooler with ice in it. Once you get home try to process your cutting(s) immediately. This pro-cedure involves stripping the lower half of the cutting of all foliage and then removing any leftover or active blooms by either pinching or cutting them out. For plants with big leaves like hydrangeas, cut the leaves in half (the half that is away from the stem) in an effort to reduce the surface area whereby the plant can transpire water.

Now take the cutting and dip it into your rooting hormone (if you are using a powder, first wet the cutting). Now place it into tray or cell pack that has been filled with the potting media, trying to keep a little space between other cuttings for disease purposes. Next find a shady spot to place your tray in and mist the foliage frequently so that a gleam of water is on the leaf for the entire day (obviously there is no need to worry about your cutting once the sun has set). Some people cover the area with burlap or a fabric that is then moistened and therefore increases the humidity below. Once you begin to see roots, you can begin to water

less frequently and more thoroughly – making sure that your media, not your leaf so much, stays moist to the touch. With the onset of roots the plant will require food - sprinkle Os-mocote onto the tray around the roots and for the rest of the summer keep the soil moist in order to encourage thorough rooting of your new plant.

Around November 10 or so cre-ate a covered cold-frame or similar structure to protect the cuttings from the freezing temperatures. Dur-ing the winter, keep the soil moist

but not wet. Be sure to open your cold-frame on warm winter days so that your cuttings do not prematurely break dormancy.

Once spring arrives and the threat of frost subsides, remove your rooted cutting from the cell pack and place in either a 1 gallon container or a deck planter and closely monitor its progress. One season in either con-tainer is enough to move from the pot to your landscape bed.

Until our next article,Happy Propagating!

Dr. STEPHEN SCHMITZ of Afton Family Medicine

Summer Shoes Bring the Foot BluesWith summer coming, our foot

wear changes. It’s too hot to wear socks or don our heavy shoes and we go with the quick and easy. Flip flops, sandals, crocs, slip on shoes or bare feet. It feels great to wiggle our toes and we are light on our feet. We may not don our lace up shoes until Autumn. And, because it is so stylish- we’ll endure the foot pain! There are many types of foot pain that increase in warmer weather. Plantar fasciitis, heel pain syndrome, Morton’s neuroma and bunion pain to name a few.

We take about 10,000 steps a day and each time we step, there is 1.3 times our body weight that is placed on the foot. That is a lot of pound-ing and a lot of repetitive weight bearing over the years. The foot hits the ground first (hopefully) and when it hits, it starts a chain reac-tion all the way up to the low back of joint movement and muscles that are activated so you can walk. If your alignment is off at the foot, it will be off at the knee, hip and low back. It

will be off each time you take a step. Quality shoes with adequate support help the foot and ankle alignment. There are also over the counter shoes inserts or custom shoe inserts that help with foot alignment. However, if you are wearing thin flip flops, the chances of good alignment are slim and the chances of increased foot pain are high.

As one who is completely flat footed (no arch), who has plantar fas-ciitis and who loves to wear sandals instead of shoes, I have found some strategies to manage the summer foot pain. First, don’t skimp on shoes. It is the first line of protection for your joints. There are increasingly better flip flops being made that have more shock absorption and arch support. They are not the $1.99 pair and do cost a bit. It is worth it. The com-pany, Teva, makes a good supportive sandal as well. Some sandals can now even accommodate your shoe inserts. Second, do not walk barefoot on wood, concrete or tile floors. If you have a favorite work spot in your kitchen or work shop, be sure to

have a rug or thick rubber mat under your feet to absorb shock. Third, be sensible. If you know you are going shopping or will be on your feet all day- wear your tennis shoes. Or, if you will be going to an event in the evening where you wish to wear san-

dals then wear your supportive shoes in the day time. Fourth, stretch and continue to exercise to keep your legs strong. Fifth, maintain your appropri-ate weight. More weight equals more stress on the feet.

Lastly, enjoy your summer!

Dear Dr. Steve,What can you tell me about the

shingles vaccine?

A patient told me a joke that went something like this: Bubba came to the doctor’s window and said “I’ve got the shingles.” After a long series of waiting and retell-ing his reason for being there to the receptionist and nurses etc, the doc-tor finally has him strip down and examines him, only to come to the conclusion that Bubba does not, in fact, have shingles. To that, Bubba says, “of course I don’t have them on me, the whole load of them is out on my truck!”

Of course, your question does not refer to Bubba’s roofing material, but to the very painful disease called herpes zoster, or shingles.

Shingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus that lives in a persons spine for the rest of their life after having had chicken pox as a kid. If it reactivates, is usually causes a burning, painful, blistering rash on one side of the body which is shingles. It is miserable, and what

is worse, sometimes even after the rash goes away the burning pain can remain for years.

There is now a vaccine, called Zostavax, that is recommended by the CDC for people aged 60 and older to help prevent shingles. In studies Zostavax reduces the number of people who get the disease by 50%.

It is safe, in that it does not have known major side effects and is usually well tolerated. Some people will get minor redness and sore-ness at the injection site, and rarely someone will get a headache from it. One problem, however, is the cost of this shot. It is expensive and insur-ances (including Medicare) only cover it to varying degrees, so if you are interested make sure to talk with your insurance company about the cost to you.

8 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JUNE 009

... she was 7yr old lady who loved life and everbody she ever met. Ive known her for ten years, never did she say any-thing bad about anyone. always greeted you with a smile. if the world was full of opal pages you wouldnt be sitting here reading this ...

...We lived in Northern Virginia for over 5 years and one might think we would become jaded to these events. But something awful happened in our lives as well when Ms Page was so brutally murdered. This peaceful, beautiful place we live in suddenly was shattered with horror that something like this happened here. We are “transplants” like yourself but we have come to feel so at home here as if we had lived here much longer. The people of Nelson County are friendly, honest, hard-working, salt of the earth people and we feel like family here. And we feel we have lost a member of our family. Our hearts go out to the Page family ...

... I knew Mrs. Page from the time my daughter was 5 and in kindergarten at Rockfish until the present. Mrs. Page was a member of my mother’s church, and you couldn’t find a more caring and giving person. Whether we would see her at church functions such as the Harvest Sale, or helping in the kitchen when the Church was making apple butter or can-ning fruits and vegetables for the Harvest Sale, she always had a smile on her face and made time to speak to everyone she would see. Nelson County and Rodes Methodist Church have lost a wonderful member of their community. She will be missed greatly by everyone who knew her. I also want to thank Sheriff Brooks and his department along with the other law enforcement agencies for catching these suspects as quickly as they did. Our hearts and prayers go out to Mrs. Page’s family and friends for this tragic loss ...

I don’t think they have said what led them to those two all I have heard them say that the eye witness was the key … Maybe the outfits are ones they had on during other crimes … I would like to know myself and why would they have done something so horrible to such a sweetheart … Its something I will never forget and I know I aint the only one … Miss u ms page I know u are watching down on all your kids (school kids and birth kids) always in our heart ...

I live in Fluvanna and am from Amherst County. There are sad people all over about this. Its hard to think this could happen in beautiful Nelson County to someone so well thought of and respected. I too know and have known people as she was described. My mother for one who is 8 and lives alone. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of Nelson County ...
