Tenuta Regaleali
The story of Tasca d’Almerita is that of a family who has dedicated their lives to supporting the knowledge and power of nature for eight generations: a love born in 1830, with the purchase of the Regaleali estate, which at the time was named ‘Rahl Ali’, translated as ‘the house of Ali’.
At the time of purchasing, the estate was 1,200 hectares in the countryside near Sclafani Bagni, in the center of Sicily. Here, on the border between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, the impact of the landscape stuns and excites.
Today this is a family home, a farm, a 550 hectare (downsized due to the Agrarian Reform in the 1950s) open-air laboratory of viticulture immersed in an ideal microclimate with considerable temperature changes from day to night, an altitude ranging from 400 to 750 meters above sea level, and different types of soil.
But the great fortune of this place are the people, from the passion of the Tasca family to the dedicated generations of women and men who have worked these lands.
In 1854 Regaleali was honored as a “Model Farm” in the “Annals of Sicilian Agriculture”. The cultivation of cereals and production of animal feed were the main activities in the Regaleali area at the time, while grapevines occupied only a small portion of the cultivated land.
Over the years the vocation of cultivating grapes and winemaking has been supported and accompanied with expertise and a contemplative compassion. The estate has become a driving force and is where the family has developed its strategies, new projects, and innovations.
Tenuta Regaleali - Conte Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita
Giuseppe, Lucio e Alberto Tasca d’Almerita
Qui è dove i sogni diventano realtà.
And it’s also where dreams come true: from that of Count Giuseppe Tasca, who created a Rosso Regaleali reserve at the end of the 1960s as the first single vineyard wine in Sicily (Rosso del Conte). And to the vision of Count Giuseppe’s son Lucio Tasca who experimented with the first international varieties, forging a path that many have followed.
In 1984, to celebrate fifty years of marriage with his wife Franca, Count Giuseppe created Nozze d’Oro, a blend of Inzolia and Sauvignon.
The beginning of the 2000s marked an ideal passing of the torch to the next generation, Giuseppe and Alberto, who view the family philosophy with an entrepreneurial perspective, and are able to combine the local with the international.
Tenuta Capofaro Tenuta Tascante
Now is the time to broaden the approach to land in all of Sicily and as “evolved custodians” it is important to look for more suitable land with strong personalities. This is why Alberto Tasca has spearheaded a project for the development and enrichment of particular native vines in suitable areas and acquired an estate in Salina that is now home to Capofaro Locanda & Malvasia, a member of the Relais & Chateaux circuit and central to Tasca hospitality.
In 2007 it was Etna’s turn with the Tascante project. And in that same year the Whitaker Foundation entrusted Tasca d’Almerita with making wine from the grapes from the island of Mozia. And in 2009 Tasca d’Almerita began managing the historic estate of the Sallier de La Tour cousins in the Monreale DOC. These four estates are connected to Regaleali and have become central to the hub of a wheel in perpetual motion.

It’s clear that the future of this historic company is not connected to a single label, or to an obsessive return to the past. The future is written by thinking about the environment as a key to innovation and to the entire system. And so SOStain was born in 2010, a Sicilian project of “green” viticulture with planned and progressive improvement going hand in hand with scientific research, aimed at measuring and reducing the impact of all company activity on the territory’s resources.SOStain was born to contextualise the need for sustainability specifically in Sicily’s case and is a completely transparent agenda that has been created by wine producers for wine producers. And above all it is based on scientific, measurable, and verifiable indicators. Certification is granted only to the wine producers who meet the strict minimum requirements which include the calculation of VIVA indicators, the sustainability program promoted by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea of Italy.

The established way of thinking at Tasca intersects nature, culture, family and puts Sicily at the center, with its uniqueness and diversity.
At Tasca it is important to value everything that “lives” within the production system, including the environment, the landscape, the culture, and the traditions of the community. Alberto and Francesca Tasca have created Cogito as an “aperitif for the mind”; it is a series of meetings aimed at the shared discussion of controversial topics of general interest.
This is a journey launched to promote events and cultural activities, and to share positivity, interesting things, and ideas that can help the territory grow. This gathering has been included among the additional events of Manifesta, the European biennial of contemporary art, and at Palermo’s festivities as Italy’s Cultural Capital of 2018.
A family home since 1830, Regaleali is the symbol of a blood bond between nature and Tasca d’Almerita; they share intertwining histories that could not exist without the other. Everything began on the land between Valledolmo and Sclafani Bagni and the company continues to design new strategies and new adventures here today.
This is a unique territory and an exceptional mixture of natural and human resources which have been a part of its journey from feudal peasant land to wine estate and continue to fuel the centuries-old philosophy of Regaleali. The soils vary from vineyard to vineyard, creating a surprising mosaic of geological compositions.
The microclimate at Regaleali is atypical compared to the other viticultural areas of Sicily which are mainly concentrated in coastal areas. The considerable distance from the sea combined with the presence of the Madonie mountain range protect the property from marine influences, and the typical altitude of mountain areas establishes an almost continental climate.
Winters are cold and rainy, with precipitation that can even include snow, while the spring is generally cooler and the summers are hot and dry. The summer is also characterized by its notable temperature variation between night and day, with an average temperature range of 15ºC and sometimes even reaching 22 - 23ºC.
The continuous research, experimentation, and the steady dialogue with neighboring farmers, colleagues, and universities continue to highlight the potential of the grapevines, which represent many of the various grape varietals in Sicily.
Today the two core activities, agricultural and winemaking, coexist while strengthening one another: an ancient wheat is grown at Regaleali for the production of bread and pasta at Capofaro (winner of the 2018 Italian restaurant guide Gambero Rosso’s “best bread on the table”), the native Comisana breed of “red headed” sheep roam freely, and precious extra virgin olive oil is produced, drawing on a centennial olive growing culture.
The particular climatic conditions and the soil variability allow for the growth and adaptation of many different grape varieties, especially aromatic ones which would otherwise not be suitable in the hot Sicilian climate.
The white wines have ample aromatic expressions, accompanied by a freshness not expected for these varietals in Sicily while the red wines are bold with good acidity, giving them great potential for aging.
The Regaleali Estate continues to be mentioned as a model winery and farm for its experimentation, its ability to introduce innovative cultivation and winemaking techniques, and for introducing international varieties while continuing to honor Sicily’s native vines.
Wine alone is not enough to express the essence of Sicily and the uniqueness of each Tasca estate.
At Regaleali, olive trees have always represented an alternative to the crops growing on the arable land, they also simply provide ornamentation along the vineyard’s side roads in the Estate. An olive varietal census was conducted in order to identify the genetic, varietal, and historical characteristics of each plant. This was a true “agricultural archeology” operation allowing us to save lesser-known olive varieties that had been forgotten over time or replaced with more resistant plants. The delicacy of Biancolilla, and the power and spiciness of Nocellara del Belice and other minor varieties (Ogliarola Messinese, Piricuddara, Cerasuola, Giarraffa, Nerba, Rizza) give the oils unique flavors and intriguing aromas, and serve as a synthesis of the territory’s olive-growing history.
To really understand Regaleali one must experience it. Only the Tasca family can describe this land as it breathes with the cycles of nature and leads the guest by the hand on a journey through grapevine rows full of fruit, cultivated fields, wine and honest food.
Each encounter is an opportunity for exchange and comparison, and serves as an experience involving all of the senses.
One can explore this slice of paradise by staying at Regaleali, in the center of Sicily, between lakes and hills, wheat fields and olive trees, where wine has been made for two hundred years and constant experimentation has taught us to look at the future through our wine glass.
The historic Regaleali estate is the place where it all comes together: the true values of family, cuisine and flavors, space and silence alongside the sensation of feeling at home.
There is the also the possibility to discover the agricultural philosophy of the Tasca family in the world of Regaleali: how to think about the land, how to grow vines, and the transformation of grapes into wines represents the fruit of viticultural and oenological research conducted over several years.
The flavors from the vegetable garden are the best guides in understanding the tradition of a cuisine built on never-forgotten ancient recipes, thanks to the memory and knowledge of home cooks who continue to respect the ancient “monsù”, the historic chefs of Sicilian aristocratic families, as well as the recipes of today.

The Rosso del Conte, created in 1970, is the first
expression of quality and longevity made in Sicily.
Created by Count Giuseppe because it expresses the
characteristics of the Regaleali Estate. It originates from
Perricone and Nero d’Avola, from a sapling cultivation
at the San Lucio vineyard. It has a long history in which
it has evolved and aged using different techniques
(chestnut barrels from 1970 to 1987, Slavonian oak
barrels until 1991 and finally French oak tenneaus and
barriques). It was the first single vineyard wine in Sicily.
NOZZE D’ORO

Created from a blend of Inzolia and Sauvignon selection,
a variety selection that has been cultivated at Regaleali
since World War I. The use of local yeasts ties this wine
even more to the territory it comes from. Fresh, young
and surprisingly prone to longevity, balances the tertiary
aromas with the intensity of the fruit.

matching the world’s most celebrated white wine variety.
After experimenting with vine cuttings brought directly
from Burgundy, he planted 5 hectares with Chardonnay
on the inferior part of the San Francesco hill, at about
500 meters above sea level, with rich soils and slightly
calcareous which is ideal for white wine grapes.
It is able to combine the savory and fresh aspect with
good structural balance.
ALMERITA CONTESSA FRANCA

all’ombra per preservarne acidità e caratteristiche
aromatiche tipiche: arancia candita, rosa gialla e

An ancient grape variety, a cross between Moscato
and Catarratto, results in a wine with a concentrated
and complex aroma. It’s cultivated at Regaleali on
the hills next to Case Vecchie. We produce it by blending
grapes from different harvest times: the part from
the early harvest, for freshness and hints of mineral; the
part from the later harvest gives it structure. Just like in
the fairy tales, the cricket “Grillo” was used by the fairies
as a horse, hence “Cavallo delle Fate” (the fairies’ horse).
