Ho, Ho, Ho,
What is on your Christmas wish list? The Medford Police Department is wishing for some qualified
candidates from our recent Assessment Center that was done on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. At this time we are
looking to fill one police officer position and hopefully establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. The
Assessment Center is one of a couple of different ways MPD tests for qualified applicants for this very
complex and challenging career. During the Assessment Center applicants participate in a written
exercise, a group exercise, and several panel interviews. Each portion of the Assessment Center is scored
by assessors and at the end of the third day everyone comes together to discuss the top candidates.
Another way MPD hires officers is by doing a “lateral process.” This hiring process is open to certified
officers from other departments to include other states. One advantage to a lateral process is you are
hiring an officer who has already attended the police academy and has prior experience.
Lastly, we occasionally will have an internal hiring process for police officer. The majority of the
candidates during this process are currently working at MPD as Community Service Officers. Truth be
told, some of our best officers started their careers as CSO’s.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Lt. Ivens (CSO from 1995 – 1996)
Greetings, NW team members! We are just days away from the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays. Many of us will be out shopping and
preparing for various activities, celebrations and festivities. During the Holidays, some of us will stay in
town, while others will be traveling. Please make your Holidays as safe as possible, by considering the
following annual tips:
WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT The seat belts in your vehicle are there to protect you and your passengers. Oregon law (ORS 811.210)
requires that all motor vehicle operators and passengers be properly secured in their vehicles by a safety belt
or harness, unless all safety belt equipped seating positions are occupied by other persons. Don’t wait for a
reminder from a MPD patrol or traffic officer. Please, buckle up and do it correctly (over the shoulder, not
under). Seat belts are a simple and effective device installed in our vehicles that greatly increases our ability
to arrive at our destination safely. We always take time to make sure our loved ones, kids and grandkids are
buckled in, but who will buckle them in, if we are no longer there? STAYNG SAFE AND ALERT AT THE ATM If you observe any suspicious activity when approaching, return at a later time or use another location. Call
MPD at 541-770-4783 and report the suspicious activity. Do not use cash machines that are out of public
view. Choose ones that are well lit and have high visibility from the street. Have your ATM card and/or
deposit envelope ready and completed when you approach a cash machine. Avoid displaying your cash by
putting it away as soon as you have completed your transaction. Then, verify your cash in a safe location.
Retain your receipt and keep it with your financial records. Verify each transaction by checking the receipt
against your monthly statement. Protect your P.I.N number. Never write the number on your card and
always keep your card in your wallet or purse. Do not leave your card in your vehicle. AWAY FROM YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
Remember to lock your doors, windows and close your garage door before leaving your home, even if you
are only away for a minute. Leave a random light on in your home or a radio/TV while you’re away. It will
give the appearance that someone is home. If you are going to be away from your home, make sure gifts
are not visible from a window or door. Break down and dispose of packaging that would broadcast any
valuable items you may have received such as TV’s, stereos, etc. Don’t disclose valuables that you have
received for Christmas, or festivities you will be attending on social sites such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.
PARTY REMINDERS
Many of us will most likely be attending various holiday festivities over the next few weeks at work, or other
locations with family or friends. Acting responsibly especially when consuming adult beverages will save lives
and a lot of heartache.
If you are hosting a party where alcoholic beverages will be served, do include non-alcoholic beverages as
well. Make arrangements and appoint guests who will not be consuming any alcoholic beverages, to be
designated drivers for guests who may need a ride home. MPD enforces a ZERO tolerance policy toward
those who choose to Drive Under the Influence of Intoxicants. Please remember that only time will eliminate
consumed alcohol from your body.
On behalf of your MPD, have a Safe and Merry Christmas. CSO Todd Sales, MPD #908
