Neighborhood Market Training Sample for Gavin Zeff
[This training material is the program for the new format for Walmart known as the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The first portion of the training is the PowerPoint, and the second is this group of handouts that are
used to check on the business, to see if it is running correctly. I worked collaboratively with the market manager and another trainer to develop this material. The reason this material was developed is that most of
the people who were promoted to the Neighborhood Markets were transitioning from a Walmart Supercenter, which is a completely different business.]
The first page is the itinerary, and the entire training was designed to be a one-day training, with an in store, hands-on portion.
[The hands-on portion was used to cement the learning. To begin with, we studied food safety and we spoke about it in the store. We prepared sandwiches and chicken that we ate for lunch in the classroom. Another activity was making smoothies, where the milk had gone bad (on purpose) so that the participants could see first-hand the results of not being vigilant on catching out-of-date products before consumers get them. We
then repeated the demonstration with products that the people checked the dates and made sure all the ingredients were good. While we were drinking smoothies, we went over the financials.]
[This page details the collectibles that the managers were responsible for. We went over each line item and described how to perform each task. We created a separate book for Produce, Meat, Deli and Bakery. We also created these collectibles so that the Market Manager would be able to see what was going on each
monthly, weekly and daily.]
[This is the Store Profile Report that several of the key metrics were taken from. We found that when the managers are aware of their numbers, it makes them aware of how their associates impact them. We used
this report to teach the Store Managers how to share this information with their associates.]
[A key learning component of this training was the Fresh Financials. To most of the management, this was new information. Our focus was to see the Sales Class Average and help the managers get closer to these numbers and to
think through what could be causing the variance.]
[This is an example of the collectible that was sent to the market manager.]
[This page is to help managers audit their holding bins in the backrooms, and for them to see the impact of not having them in order.]
[This is a detailed checklist that was designed to help the managers manage the details that are involved with managing a produce department, and hold high standards.]
