St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in North Tonawanda will hold a “Blessing of the Animals” on Sunday, October 28 during its 10:30 a.m. service. The church will welcome all members and guests, and all types of pets under control. Whether a member of a faith community or not, everyone is invited to come with their animal companion and receive a blessing that recognizes the importance of creatures in God’s design. During the service pets will be welcomed to the altar where they will be blessed by the church’s pastor, Rev. Linda Harle-Mould. She will offer prayers for the animal and its human family. Each pet will receive a neckerchief or a cross for its collar or cage. There will also be special treats, ranging from dog biscuits to mealworms. Last year 44 people and 11 animals attended the blessing including dogs, a cat, an owl, an armadillo and a blue-tongued skink. This year, whether they are present or not, the service will also include blessings for service animals, police and rescue animals, visiting pets and companion pets. Pastor Linda is an animal person by nature who also works in wildlife rehabilitation at Messinger Woods Wildlife Care & Education Center (www. messingerwoods.org) and is a docent at the Buffalo Zoo. She is prepared to welcome any type of animal that needs a blessing, because animals are part of God’s creation that are a blessing to us. As God’s servants, we have an obligation to care for his creatures and offer God’s blessings to them. She is strongly guided by the principles of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and the Dakota wisdom which says that we are all related. I met with Rev. Harle-Mould and two of the pets that were blessed last year, Gumper and Leo, along with their human companions, John and Sharon Stewart. Gumper is a 160 pound, four year old, Great Dane/bloodhound mix that the Stewarts adopted through Black Dog/Second Chance (www. blackdogsecondchance.org), a no-kill, 501(c)3 organization. Leo is a 90 pound greyhound who came to the Stewarts about six months ago through Buffalo Greyhound Adoption (www.b-g-a.org), an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the qualities of the ex- racing greyhound and finding responsible homes for greyhounds after their racing careers. He was a race dog who ran in 72 races before moving into foster care. The Stewarts refer to Leo as a “gentle giant” because he has a great temperament as a booth dog to take to events where they can help promote awareness of the greyhound cause. Founded in 1888, St. Peter’s looks forward to celebrating its 125th anniversary next year. Its roots are in the German immigrant community and the German Evangelical churches. They are a faithful, gathered community that believes in the grace and love found through the risen Christ. Worship services are based on the premise of believing in the joyful presence of the Lord where laughing is encouraged. Music is an important part of the church’s ministry and the congregation loves to sing. They will often have a Hymn Sing Sunday where the pastor sits with the congregation while Sharon presents a story and her sister, Lynette Panebianco, the church organist, plays hymns selected by the congregation. John handles audio-video duties that enhance the spirit of the worship service. Lyrics to songs are always displayed on an overhead screen, along with pictures and an occasional joke during the passing of the Peace. St. Peter’s is made up of people who enjoy working together. They are known for their fish fries or chicken and biscuit dinners, where guests find plenty of food and fellowship. Visitors to Canal Fest look forward to their fish dinners and sandwiches, as well as the over ten thousand deep fried Oreos they served this year! In 2012 they also hosted a luau featuring guests from the United Church of Christ in Hawaii who educated guests about the history of Queen Liliuokalani. October 2012 — Neighbor Link News — 3

My heart was wounded and I lived in a state of constant battle with fear, fear of rejection, doubt, unbelief, anger, hatred, rage, and lust. I needed help!I discovered awonderful Spirit-filled prayer counselor who together with her husband prayed with me for about three hours. And I was free! The war was over! I was thrilled.I spent the next two

months searching for and memorizing verses which would close the door so that the above negative spiritual strongholds could not come back. I memorized verses on the opposite side of the coin from the issues I had been delivered from. For example, to keep anger out, I memorized verses on love and mercy and forgiveness. To keep fear out, I memorized

verses on faith and trust and belief, and so on.I also did extensive two-way journaling where I asked God what He wanted to show me about these areas, so I could think differently and respond differently when tempted to go back into my old ungodly thought patterns. His daily counsel through journaling wasinvaluable! One journal entry which was completely life transforming was this: “Mark, whatever you fix your eyes upon, grows within you, and whatever grows within you, you become.” God taught me never to look at my sin or my weakness or my strength, but to look only at Him. This way Jesus grew within me and I became Christ-like, because I become a reflection of that which I fix my eyes upon. The lady who prayed for me had prayed seven specific prayers with me. I have written about these seven prayers in my book Prayers that Heal the Heart and we also have created CDs DVDs and a LEARN workbook to help others who are

struggling to become emotionally free.Paul Mortimer from England states: “I’ve read many, many books on curses, healing and deliverance and even though I have had much prayer ministry, the key root issues didn’t seem to be dealt with.  After only a couple of days with your teaching, I have found amazing healing through the prayers, and in particular using vision to re-visit traumatic experiences of the past and see Jesus begin healing my wounded heart.” Dr. Joy Hong of New York City shares: “I was taught to apply 7 specific prayers and as I prayed through each prayer I began to feel lighter in my chest and in my spirit. As I finished repenting of my negative expectations and inner vows I felt so much lighter and better.“Then I invited Jesus to come into the traumatic pictures in my mind of things that had happened in my past. I was able to see these negative pictures in a new light as I saw Jesus there, moving and doing things. Finally I was

able to interpret these events positively. I felt relieved and free from the negative power of these past memories.”

The seven prayers are: breaking generational sins and curses, severing ungodly soul ties, repenting of ungodly beliefs, renouncing inner vows, receiving inner healing, breaking word curses, and finally deliverance.

And don’t forget the follow up two-way journaling and Bible meditation. They are essential!Training materials for Prayers That Heal the Heart and How to Hear God’s Voice are available from Communion With God Ministries 716-681-4896 or www.CWGMinistries.org.

church celebrates the joy of Christmas every year. Last year they created decorations for a colonial Christmas; this year they are planning a theme around angels.

They also enjoy a unique relationship with St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in West Seneca, where Linda’s husband, Rev. Hope Harle-Mould, is the pastor. Referring to themselves as St. Peter’s North and South, members of the north community have visited the West Seneca church and the music group from the south community, “Strike The Rock,” presented a concert at the North Tonawanda church. In a unique twist, when St. Peter’s North was looking for hymnals, St. Peter’s South just happened to purchase a new set and had an old set they could donate to their sister church that was already engraved for St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.

Back To School BluesON

The new school season is well underway, and you may find yourself fighting with your children to do their homework. The hours can be long and grueling if you have a child who resists. Fortunately, there are several strategies that can help motivate kids to get their homework without a battle. First, rule out any learning difficulties. The stigma of having a child with a learning disability can cause parents to neglect the problem, and the child is forced to struggle with a challenge that could easily be resolved by having school professional evaluate for learning difficulties. The child struggling with an undiagnosed disability may internalize that they don’t measure up, and as a result, feelings of low self-esteem set in.  Researchers think that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a person’s brain works and how it processes information. Children with learning disabilities are not “dumb” or “lazy.” In fact, they usually have average or above average intelligence. Their brains just process information differently. Homework is given as means of reinforcing what a child has learned at school. It is not a punishment. If parents treat is as such, then so will kids and thus begins the battle. If you find yourself fighting with your kids to get homework done you might want to try some of these strategies to help motivate them. Set a regular time for homework. If you involve the kids in setting the time that they would like to do their homework each night, you

are helping them to take ownership in the process.   Giving them some choice in the matter will help kids see it as less of a punishment. Once the time has been established, then stick to that time. It is also helpful to give a reminder after school that they chose for example, 7:00 PM to homework time.

Using the “I” message.      I teach assertiveness in my counseling sessions as many people find that their problems come from lack of being understood or ineffectively communicating their needs.  In assertiveness training, we learn to state what you need using the “I” message. If you start a sentence off with “You”, it comes across as more of an attack, and puts people on the defensive. If you start with “I”, the focus is more on how you are feeling and how you are affected by their behavior. For  example:  “ YOU need to do your homework now “!   is going to be much less effective than if you stated calmly“ I’ am going to turn the TV off so that you can begin.”   “ It is 7PM now, and you chose to do your homework at that time. In this example we are empowering kids to be motivated. How? Because we have taken out the power struggle. First by reminding of THEIR choice and telling them what you are going to do. Not what they need to do. If we were to say, ” You do your homework now or the TV is going off”  it sounds similar, but the message here becomes more punitive than motivating.  Keeping a calm tone of voice is also a key in getting kids engaged. Be patient, it may take some time before kids begin to respond. Keep trying because it will be worth it in the

long run eventually eliminating the battle altogether. Assertiveness is often mistaken for aggressiveness, but it is simply stating your own needs respectfully to others, and allowing others to express theirs without judgment. Jesus was a master at assertive communication.  In scripture He does not say to us, “You must choose this.” Rather, he says, “Choose this and such and such will happen.” But he leaves the choice with us. We are free to choose. The only thing he requires is that once we walk through the door of one of the alternatives, we must be prepared to live with the consequences. He doesn’t present these choices with malice, but out of his sincere desire to make it possible for us to live as true people of God. He gives us choices, but spoke with authority.  He said “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19,20) We see in scripture that Jesus was authoritative, but also respectful, even when someone didn’t agree with him. He didn’t argue, He just presented the consequences.. The choice is up to us.

Andrew Barron of Jews for Jesus will speak at St. John Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 7th at 8 pm.Pastor Ronald Oravec invites all to attend. Jews for Jesus uses creative methods and contemporary issues to present the message that Jesus is the Messiah to Jewish people around the world.Barron was a science student whose studies in astronomy caused him to wonder about the vastness and complexity of the universe. In 1981, while helping to design and plan space shuttle missions for the United States

Space Program, he came across a gospel pamphlet from Jews for Jesus and wrote a letter to the ministry. One of the staff had a short speaking tour in Denver and arranged a meeting with Barron to discuss Jesus. Shortly after their meeting, Barron was convinced that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah. He has served with the Los Angelis and Boston Branches, been a team leader on numerous Jews for Jesus Summer Witnessing Cam-paigns and pioneered the work of Jews for Jesus in South Africa. He currently is the director of Jews for Jesus in Canada. He and his wife, Laura, have two children, Ketzia and Rafael.Jews for Jesus was founded in 1973 by Moishe Rosen. who revolu-tionized Jewish evangelism with his creative approach Rosen died in May 2010. David Brickner, a fifth-generation Jewish believer in Jesus, has been the organization’s executive director since 1996. Brickner has kept Jews for Jesus on the cutting edge as the ministry has expanded and established branches in fourteen countries, including the United States, Brazil, Israel, Russia, France, and South Africa. “We exist to make the Messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to our Jewish people worldwide,” Brickner states. “There are still a few that haven’t heard of us!”To Andrew Barron and other Jews for Jesus staff, the objective evidence of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, and the transformation in their our own lives provide ample evidence that Jesus was who he claimed to be – the Jewish Messiah. Barron will be happy to answer questions after the presentation. Call(716-693-9677) for more information. There is no admission charge.

The mission of this pumpkin patch is to spread the light of Jesus to the community and provide a fun fall fundraiser that is “Not-So-Scary” for fami-lies to enjoy. All proceeds benefit our church missions.  You won’t find any goblins at S.H.I.N.E patch; instead, we offer a friendly Fall environment with activities planned for the weekends such as face painting, storytelling, petting zoo, a bounce house and more.

What began last fall as a fundraiser turned into an opportunity to give back to the community. We gave pumpkins to needy children at Seneca Street United Methodist Church in Buffalo, supplied pumpkins to help local farmers who ran out last year, and when pumpkins were leftover after Halloween, they were used by local famers for animal feed. From their growth on the Navajo reservation to the feeding of the animals, this pumpkin project brings blessing to many.

Four years ago, we began Stephen Ministry. Our goal was to build a ministry that would train men and women to care for those who are hurting. We achieved that – but a funny thing happened along the way.

Three of us went to the Stephen Leader Training conference that immersed us in the Stephen Ministry process. We came home and began planning. We prayed, talked, learned, planned, dreamed, laughed, cried, celebrated, and prayed some more- keeping before us the goal of helping hurting people to find healing and wholeness through the love of Christ.

Our next step was to recruit our first class of Stephen Ministers. I will never forget interviewing these men and women. They shared their love for God and their longing to be used in the work of the kingdom. Many described how Jesus helped them through their own past struggles and how they now wanted to be there to help others.

Then we began the 50 hours of Stephen Ministry training. One of the surprise blessings was how we ourselves were being changed. Trainees shared how their relationships at home were becoming healthier. I could see everyone growing in Christian maturity. Week after week we spent time together learning , sharing, caring, and praying for each other in the Word.

So here’s the funny thing that happened: We thought we were making a program, but it turned out that we were making disciples.

Do you have to be a Stephen Minister to become a disciple? No. But elements of Stephen Ministry illustrate the path of discipleship.

First, being a disciple is something to which God calls you- something that happens in the community, not alone. Jesus nurtured his disciples in community. They traveled with him and with each other; they learned and grew together. Stephen Ministers learn and grow together in class and supervision. Discipleship never happens alone.

Second (but just as important), growth in the inner spiritual life is balanced by a concern for the world outside ourselves and our church. Stephen Ministers study and learn, but their efforts aim toward helping others. While Jesus and his

disciples were together and he was teaching them, they were also interacting with folks around them. Jesus was concerned for and had compassion for all those he met- and he urged his disciples to do the same.

Third, consistency matters; Stephen Ministry grows disciples because of the consistency involved. Stephen Ministers meet weekly for training and then twice a month for continuing education and supervision. These on-going meetings keep Stephen Ministers centered in the Word, grounded in a community of believers, and focused on their mission: to share the love of Christ with those who are hurting.

This leads to two key questions. One: Do you want to be a disciple, one who stays close to the Word, be accountable to a small group, and look for a way to serve? Stephen Ministry enables you to do all that and more.

Second: Are you hospitalized, grieving, angry, suffering loneliness or discouragement, divorce or separation, terminal illness, unemployment, new parenthood, single parenthood, victim of a disaster, or any other type of need? If the answer is yes, the Stephen Ministry or the Samaritan Counseling Center can help. If you are hurting for any reason and would like someone to walk with you through this tough time or if you wish to help others or know more about starting a Stephen Ministry at your church, contact The Samaritan Counseling Center 716-743-9117 or outside of Erie and Niagara Counties, 1- 800-660-5053. BY JEFF KEEFE In historical terminology 1200BC

was the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age, but something else was happening at that time in the Eastern Mediterranean world. The Mycenaean Civilization, centered in Greece and the Aegean Sea collapsed; cities were burned but without any evidence of a foreign army. The Hittite Empire, centered in Anatolia (Turkey), collapsed partially because of a confederation of Mycenaean Greeks known as the “Sea Peoples” attacked their cities. They also attacked and destroyed numerous sites along the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Is the story of the Trojan War in Homer’s “Iliad,” related to the other events happening about this time?

The Egyptian Empire may have also collapsed but Pharaoh Ramses III beat back the “Sea Peoples” in a great battle. In Ramses’ mortuary temple he depicts his military victories; one of the groups of Sea Peoples he names are the Peleset. A Peleset captive is shown above. He claims to have settled a great number of prisoners in southern Canaan. Or having been defeated, did they go there on their own? Was Ramses then stretching the truth, because he was unable to prevent them from moving into that part of Egyptian dominated territory? These Peleset “Sea Peoples” are the Biblical

Philistines. It seems the “ Sea Peoples” are refugees from the collapsed Mycenaean civilization. Or are they part of the cause of it?

According to Amos and Jeremiah, the Philistines were from Caphtor. Caphtor has long been thought to be Crete (though a minority of historians think Caphtor was elsewhere). The Mycenaean civilization replaced the Minoan Civilization that had been based on the island of Crete.

Evidence that the Philistines were connected to the Mycenaean/Aegean world has been found by archaeologists. They brought with them to Canaan a new architectural style that focused on the hearth. Their pottery was made locally, but the style was like the Late Bronze Age Mycenaean pottery. Also dated to this time in the Philistine territory are a significant number of pig bones indicating their preference for pork. Last year a two-horned altar was uncovered, at Tel-es-Safi, possibly Gath (Goliath’s home town). Two horned altars seem to have originated in the Aegean world.

The Philistines were able to move into five Canaanite cities, Askelon, Ekron, Ashdod, Gath and Gaza along the southeastern coast of the Mediterranean. That area was critical to Egypt as the “Way of the Sea” trade route to the north. Originally content to settle in the land near their five cities, they began to move north along the coast (after Ramses III’s

death), encountering the Tribe of Dan (Samson was a Danite). Sampson’s interactions with the Philistines shows a mingling of cultures and is more about personal issues than territorial ones. The Philistines also moved east into the foothills of Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim.

1st Samuel is full of encounters with the Philistines. In about 1050BC the Israelites and Philistines forces clashed in the Battle of Ebenezer/Aphek. As a result the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant. This also resulted in the destruction of the Tabernacle at Shiloh. It is not mentioned in the 1 Samuel 4 story, but it is remembered in Psalm 78:60-61 and 400 hundred years later by Jeremiah (Jer. 7:12). 1st Samuel 13 & 14 tells how Jonathan routed the Philistines from their base in Israel. David’s encounter with the Philistine Goliath of Gath is in 1st Sam. 18 when King Saul’s army is lined up against the Philistines in the Valley of Elah.

Battle of Mount Gilboa ends with the death of King Saul and his sons. The Philistines fastened their bodies to the wall of the Temple of Ashtoreth at Beth-Shan. Beth-Shan was in the territory of Issachar or Asher, but belonged to the tribe of Manasseh. It was probably still a Canaanite city deep in the heart of Israel, since it had a temple to the female goddess Ashtoreth and the brave men of Jabesh-Gilead had to sneak in to retrieve

the bodies of Saul and his sons. The Philistines had a more diverse

economy than the tribes of Israel. Being on the coast and a “Sea People,” they had boats for fishing as well as trading with the rest of the Mediterranean world, and they were on the shortest trade route between Egypt and Mesopotamian. They had soil suitable for wheat, olives and vineyards. They lacked forests for wood and the minerals needed for making bronze and iron.

Their chief god was Dagon, he was the god of fertility and crops. Dagon also figured prominently in the Philistine concepts of death and the afterlife. The Philistine cultures merged with the local Canaanites, as did their religion. Baal eventually replaces Dagon as the chief fertility god. The Philistines as a nation and ethnic group disappeared some 600 years later after being taken over by the Persian Empire about 539 B.C.

BLESSED WOESIt is foretold, that only a super-spiritual eye could see,If there’ll be any relief for folks from fear and misery.Where heeding prosperity predictors or fortune tellers,Will make some proper people hide in old wine cellars.

Although throughout history, humans have tried to flee,Debilitating suffering, but blessed woes are a necessity. For corrupting lust and pompous pride afflicts dwellers,Of every nation where they become like skunk smellers! Obviously; afflictions are the only way to set people free. From self-exaltation that has harmed harmonious charity.Requiring stone cutters to be very accurate name spellers.Especially the odd names of sand-swirling suicide sellers!

Notably; those who join in The King’s suffering willingly,Will have their old characters refined beyond any mystery. These blessed woes spin-off sin, Preparing souls for a Glorious journey throughout Eternity!
