The Negaunee Senior Center willresume its soup luncheon on

Fridays, beginning September 15.The luncheon will be held from

11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Friday.Luncheon tickets will be $5 at the

front desk for senior citizens and $6for the general public.

The dine-in soup luncheon includesone bowl of soup (or two half-bowls ifyou want to try a second flavor) as

well as crackers, dessert and pop orcoffee. To-go soup will be $3 per bowlfor senior citizens and $4 per bowl forthe general public, with only the soupincluded.

Call to order your to-go soup any-time after 10 a.m., or stop in and orderat the front desk.

See our calendar of events for soupchoices (three per week with a vege-tarian option), which change weekly.

Matter of Balance class scheduled

The Negaunee Senior Center willlaunch its annual Fall SilentAuction fundraiser on Tuesday,

September 5.The auction will feature goods and

services donated by the NegauneeSenior Center staff, family, friendsand local businesses.

The year’s auction will include ahandmade quilt, homemade food

items including a wheel of juustoa(Finn cheese) and fresh jam, PartyLitehome decorations, essential oils good-ies, framed local photography, a com-plete car detailing, themed baskets andmore.

Bids must be placed in person, andthe auction will end promptly at 3 p.m.on Thursday, September 14.Scheduling for any services or fresh

perishable goods will take place afterthe auction is over; payment will betaken when the service is completed.

The auction will feature more than$500 worth of goods and services raf-fled off for a good cause.

All funds raised support in-homesenior services for those in need in ourarea.

Auction fundraiser opens September 5

The Negaunee Senior Center willhost a Matter of Balance class in

October.The class, which focuses on fall

prevention, building strength forbalance and awareness of commonfears, will meet twice a week forfour weeks.

Trained senior center staff willteach easy exercises to buildstrength and balance, and facilitate

discussions about fears of fallingand how to confront the agingprocess. Classes run from 1 to 3p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday.The class is for people of any phys-ical ability who are concerned aboutbalance and fall prevention.

Call 475-6266 to reserve yourspot today. There is no charge, butparticipants are welcome to make adonation at the end of the class.

Souper Fridays begin soon

The Negaunee Senior Center has afew more day trips planned for

this fall. A color tour will take placeon October 6, a deer season trip to theKnotty Pine for fish fry will take place

in November and the annualChristmas Light viewing tour willtake place in December.

Details will be released in nextmonth’s newsletter.

Cribbage tournament scheduledAcribbage tournament is sched-

uled for 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday,September 26 at the senior center.The deadline to sign up is Friday,September 22; the entry fee is $5 perperson.

Partners can sign up together, orsenior center staff can help find a

partner. Door prizes will be givenaway to participants, and a 50/50drawing will be available.

Wanted: chess players of all levelsThe Negaunee Senior Center is

seeking adults who would beinterested in playing chess againstsome area young people at 11 a.m. onthe first Tuesday of the month.

A group of young people in thearea already meet monthly to play

against each other, and would likesome new competition and somecompanionship.

If you are interested, please callthe center at 475-6266 to RSVP sowe can ensure there are even num-bers of players.

Potluckers settraditionalpotluck date

The next Potluckers will be held onFriday, September 8 and will fea-

ture a traditional potluck. Dishes mustarrive by 11:30 a.m. and the meal isserved no later than noon.

Pre-registration must be done byWednesday, September 6.

Those who wish to eat, but aren’table to bring a dish can pay a $5 feeand also must pre-register. A limitednumber of slots are available for thosenot bringing a dish to ensure we haveenough food.

Couples can bring one large maindish, two smaller dishes or one sidedish and pay $5 for the second meal.

The Potluckers group meets toexchange recipes and enjoy good foodand company once a month. It is opento the public, and anyone who enjoyscooking and eating excellent food.

Learn about health, legal issuesThe Negaunee Senior Center will

host legal, health and supportservice presentations this month afterlunch.

On September 13, staff from U.P.Health Systems—Bell will talk aboutservices available at their facility.

Staff from Lake Superior LifeCare & Hospice will talk about theirTransitions program on September20. This program is designed forolder adults who would benefit fromhaving a nurse check in with them ona weekly basis to answer questions,monitor their health care needs andmanage medications. This programprovides a nurse available to clients24/7. This is a free, grant-funded pro-

gram for the next 14 months andworks in conjunction with theclient’s family physician.

On September 27, local attorneyswill offer an interactive program thatgives you a chance to learn aboutimportant legal and financial issuesto consider, how to put plans intoplace and how to access legal andfinancial resources locally. Co-pre-sented with John Yonkers III fromBrogan & Yonkers. John will offer afree 30-minute appointment to any-one who attends. This program willcover information for families andindividuals.

All presentations start at noon andare open to the public.

Save your rummage for fall saleThe Negaunee Senior Center

will have its annual fallRummage Sale from 10 a.m.

to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14.Those wishing to donate items for

the senior center to sell may do sofrom 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday,October 6 and Monday, October 9through Wednesday, October 11.

No early or late donations can beaccepted due to limited storagespace and volunteer time. No largeappliances, perishable items, chemi-

cals, paint or similar items will beaccepted. Only six clothing itemswill be taken per person unless theyare new with tags on them or chil-dren’s sizes.

Please be kind to our volunteersand staff and abide by the followingguidelines: No ripped, broken,stained or dirty items. Freshly laun-dered clothing and linens only, aswe do not have laundry facilities atthe center.

The cost for the clinic is $15and includes a foot soak, nail clip-ping and a foot inspection. In-homeservice is available for an extracharge by calling U.P. HomeHealth at 485-4545.

• The Negaunee Senior CenterBlood Pressure Clinic is held at 10a.m. on Wednesdays, September 6and September 20. Blood pressureand blood sugar screenings arefree. There is a $5 charge for cho-lesterol checks.

• The Marquette Range RetiredSteelworker’s Club will meet at1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept-ember 13.

• The Negaunee Senior Center’sParkinsons Support Group willtake place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday,September 25. This group offerssupport and education for those liv-ing with the disease and their carepartners, and is open to anyoneaffected by Parkinsons Disease.

• Do you have legal questions?The Negaunee Senior Center canhelp you find answers. Call 475-6266 to schedule an appointmentwith a local attorney. This serviceis free to any senior citizen wholives in our service area, and takesabout a month to get an appoint-ment. Any senior citizen living inour state also may call the LegalHotline for Michigan Seniors at(800)347-5297, beginning at 10a.m., Monday through Thursday.

• The Negaunee Senior Centerwill be closed in the event of apower or other utility outage.

• If a person is injured orbecomes ill while at the NegauneeSenior Citizens Center and the ill-ness or injury appears to be lifethreatening, 911 will be called. Afamily member or designated per-son will be notified. Responsibilityfor the ambulance charge is withthe individual.

The Negaunee Senior Centeroffers the following services:

• Financial Management—Helpwith Medicare, Medicaid, under-standing insurance and other bills,balancing checkbooks, etc. We dohave a certified MMAPS counseloron staff to help you with yourMedicare questions.

• Homemaker Aide—Generallight household cleaning, laundry,light meal preparation, etc.

• Chore Service—Grass cuttingand raking and other tasks. Calltoday to get on the list.

• Shopping—Homebound clientsmay be eligible for someone to gogrocery shopping for them.Income is not a factor in deter-

mining whether or not a senior citi-zen qualifies for in-home services.Physical and health factors are con-sidered, as well as available help.

Prior to service, an in-homeassessment is done by a senior cen-ter employee. The paperwork must

be updated every six months forservices to continue.

For details on receiving services,call the center at 475-6266. Pleasebe reminded that the person whoanswers the phone likely is not theexpert who can help you. Here is aguide to help you determine whoyou should ask for when you call:

• Service Coordinator TanyaJohnson schedules all in-homeservices, such as your cleaninglady, lawn mowing services andother chores. She also coordinatesservices such as RSVP rides andMeals on Wheels. She schedulesour social worker to come andupdate service paperwork.

• Outreach Worker Aharon (pro-nounced “Erin”) LaGrander is acertified MMAPS counselor, whichmeans she can help you with allyour Medicare and Medicaid ques-tions. Aharon does not take drop-ins, so please call and schedule anappointment with her.

Bread sale fundraiser available

Estate planning set for OctoberThe State Bar of Michigan semi-

nar, “A Living Trust EducationInitiative: Who Should You Trust?Avoiding Estate Planning Mistakes”will take place Wednesday, October11 at the Negaunee Senior Center.

The seminar provides essentialestate-planning information and thewarning signs of deceptive annuitysales practices that could potentiallyjeopardize your economic stability.

During the presentation, you willlearn how to identify and avoidscams touting the benefits of a “trust-based” estate plan irrespective ofspecific needs and make exaggeratedstatements about the process. These

aggressive annuity sales tactics havealso been used against veteransapplying for Veteran Affairs benefits.

Come to this seminar to becomeaware of these sales tactics used togain access to you and your hardearned savings. If you already havean estate plan in place, this seminarwill help you to gain peace of mindthat you can ignore solicitation fromnon-lawyers suggesting that some-thing more is needed.

The senior center’s famousPaesano bread that we serve for

lunch will be on sale until Friday,September 8. Cost is $2 per loaf, orthree for $5. The bread comes frozenand parbaked; it needs to be thawedand baked for 10 minutes before

serving. Instructions are included.One loaf yields about five servings.

Bread must be paid for andordered in advance; those who orderwill be called when it comes in.

The money raised supports seniorservices in our area.

for 2018.Washington D.C. dates scheduledOur group will travel to

Washington D.C. from April 18-26, 2018.

Cost is $859 per person (for dou-ble room occupancy) and includeseight nights of lodging, 14 meals,two guided tours of the city, a mon-uments and memorials tour, time inthe Museum of the Bible and MountVernon and a tram ride throughArlington National Cemetery. Othertour stops include the Smithsonian,Capitol Hill, Embassy Row and theToledo Museum of Art.

This trip will open for sign up inFall 2017.

Canada trip dates releasedAsenior center group travel trip toIsland of Coudrés and the

Charlevoix Region of Quebec,Canada is set for September 13-23,2018.

Cost is $1,149 per person (fordouble room occupancy) and a validU.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Cardis required for this tour. Get yourpaperwork started now so you haveyour passport in time to sign up;possession of the passport or pass-port card is required prior to sign up.

This eleven-day, ten-night tripincludes three night on the Island ofCoudres, 19 meals, a guided tour ofthe island, guided tours of Montrealand Quebec City, whale watching onBay St. Catherine and a visit to theSt. Anne de Beaupre Shrine.

This is intended to be a social luncheon. A limited amount of take-out orders areavailable for those who are shut-in, homebound or under the weather by calling

before 11:00 a.m. on the day of the lunch.
