Needle Felted Keyhole ScarfNeedle felting blends warmly with embroidery in thisfleece scarf decoration project.

STEP: 1

This project will demonstrate felting techniques on afleece Keyhole Scarf. For the felting supplies, Isuggest the Needle Felting Starter Kit, whichprovides you with needles, wool fiber, a punchingpad, and even a little felt. You may also want to get afew sheets of felt in coordinating colors.

STEP: 2

Make printouts of Snowflake (sn-098) and MiniSnowflake (XL14), and use them to lay out yourdecoration plan.

STEP: 3

For each large snowflake in your decoration plan,choose an embroidery color, and prepare a matchingbobbin thread – both sides of the embroidery willshow.

STEP: 4

Next, hoop the scarf for embroidery. Set the startpoint for on the machine, and remove any markingdots or tape. Secure a piece of felt on the top andbottom of the hoop. Embroider the large snowflakedesigns through all three layers.

STEP: 5

Cut the felt away around the embroidery.

STEP: 6

Add water soluble topping for stability, andembroider small snowflakes directly on the scarf.

STEP: 7

Now we're ready to felt. Place the embroidered scarfover a buffer material such as a block of polystyrenefoam. To begin needle felting, just hold the barbedneedle upright, and stab it downward, through thethree layers of fabric, and into the foam buffer. Dothis repeatedly, all around the felt circle snowflakes.The needle barbs weld the felt fibers of the piecestogether, and also pull some of the fibers from the topside through to the underside. To get the samepulled-through effect on top, just turn the scarf over,and repeat the felting.

STEP: 8

More felting comes next. Prepare the wool fiber forfelting by pulling segments free, and twisting theminto strands between your fingers.

STEP: 9

Felt the twisted fiber down to the snowflakes and feltin a curvy pattern, as you go.

STEP: 10

Turn the scarf over, and felt matching trails into theopposite side of the scarf. Bits of fiber which havebeen brought through by the felting will guide yourneedle the second time. It's like sewing withoutstitches, and now your scarf has felted snowflakesand meanders on both sides.

STEP: 11

To give your felting some staying power, spray itwith water, and with an iron set to the "wool" setting,iron across the felted areas on both sides of the scarf.

STEP: 12

The finished scarf is a combination of a pre-madescarf, embroidery, and applique -- all broughttogether by needle felting.
