RICHARD YOuNG INITIATED AS ENTERED

AppRENTICE

It was the distinct honor and pleasure for the brethren of Lancaster Lodge No. 54 to initiate Mr. Richard (Dick) Young as an Entered Apprentice Mason on July 17. Dick has a very interesting background and bright outlook on life. “I petitioned to join Lancaster Lodge and become a Mason because I am always looking for a new adventure in life. I am looking forward to becoming involved in the activities of the lodge and very much appreciate the opportunity to become a member.” This is particularly s ign i f ican t because Dick’s outlook on life and willingness to seek new challenges is more prolific than men half his age—he turns 83 years old in November.

Dick has led and continues to lead a very, very active life. His accomplishments and commitments as a musician kept him very busy and did not allow him to have the time to become a Mason, something he wanted to do for many years. “I’ve been playing music with numerous people for well over half my life,” he said. Dick taught instrumental music in the public schools of Colorado from 1959-63; vocal music in Lexington, Nebraska from 1963-1969; and photo journalism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln until he retired in 1989. He has played Double Bass (upright string) and Baritone horn with the Cheyenne, Wyoming Symphony; the Greeley Philharmonic in Colorado; and Hastings and Kearney Symphony Orchestras. He also played Double Bass for the U.S. Army during World War II.

Welcome aboard, Dick. We’re looking forward to your adding to the harmony of our lodge.

SENIOR STEWARD BOB NICkELL DEBuTS AS

MASTER CHEf

One of the best kept secrets in Nebraska Masonic culinary history has been exposed in Lancaster Lodge No. 54. Our very own Senior Steward Bob Nickell cast himself onto the dining scene by offering to prepare a meal for our brothers in lieu of hiring a professional caterer. Always willing to give a brother a chance, the brethren of 54 anxiously awaited his first slice into the world of cooking. We were positively overwhelmed with his smothered pork chops and happily ebullient over his meat loaf and he didn’t even send us a bill. Come to find out he has been cooking like this for years. Be sure to attend the “Ladies at the Table” Lodge on Aug. 21 for his latest masterpiece!

“LADIES AT THE TABLE” LODGE SLATED

fOR AuGuST 21

WM Merv McDonough has announced a “Ladies at the Table” Lodge will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Fri., Aug. 21. This special event focuses on the ladies in our lives and is designed in their honor. Toasts to the ladies will be given with your choice of champagne, wine, or a non-alcoholic beverage. An outstanding meal is planned by Senior Steward Bob Nickell with all the trimmings. Please be sure to invite your wife, significant other, mother, sister, or daughter to this wonderful event and mark your calendars now. Invitations will arrive in the mail in the next few weeks.

“THE MASONS Of 54” pROSpECT NIGHT SET

fOR SEpTEMBER 18

“The Masons of 54” is a special evening that will focus on showcasing who we are, what we do, what we did, and what is planned for the future. Its purpose is to create a no-pressure forum to invite prospective members to become introduced to us with the hope they will choose to seek initiation and subsequently become active participants in lodge affairs.

The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a social hour including an open bar/bartender for prospective members (cash for current Brethren), an elegant prime-rib dinner at 7:00 p.m, subtle musical entertainment, and short PowerPoint presentations regarding who we are after dinner. Wives/significant others of our brethren and their prospective new members are also invited.

We begin this project by asking you to identify one potentially new member. No matter who you are or what your current life’s circumstances are, you have a doctor, dentist, lawyer, insurance agent, co-worker, son, grandson, neighbor, friend, or at least one person you know who you feel is worthy to be made a Mason in our lodge. That being said, be particularly mindful of the admonishment in the Entered Apprentice Charge that directs us not to recommend people who do not conform to our principles. Please email SW Patrick Barger for further event details at [email protected]. Look for a formal invitation from WM Merv McDonough in the mail in the weeks ahead.

DREW BRuHL INITIATION INTO LANCASTER LODGE

BECOMES A “fAMILY AffAIR”

July 10 found Lancaster Lodge initiating the fifth Bruhl into our lodge. Drew Bruhl joins his Brother Derek, Father Martin, Grandfather Bob, and Uncle Randy in our ranks. “I wanted to carry on our family tradition of being Masons in 54. They all talk highly of it.” Drew is currently attending Southeast Community College majoring in biology. He is particularly interested in Wildlife Ecology with an emphasis in freshwater fish. Sports are a primary focus for Drew, as he plays baseball in an adult league in Beatrice and can be found hitting the links regularly on area golf courses. We look forward to his next step in Masonry!

NOTES ABOuT

BRETHERN Bro. and Army First Lieutenant

Adam Brinkman left his station at Fort Lewis WA in late July for a tour of duty in Bagdad, Iraq. He expects to work in a secure area that he will seldom need to leave. His wife will remain at their home in Lacey WA, near Fort Lewis. Our prayers and best wishes go with Bro. Adam as he serves us overseas.

Past Master John McHenry (1982) and Past Grand Master (1990), a practicing Lincoln lawyer, recently headed a citizen group studying the question whether Lancaster County should keep, lease, or sell Lancaster Manor, a county-owned nursing home for poor people. The study group recommended that the county sell the home.

B r o . D a v i d S h i v e l y,

who is the Lancaster County E l e c t i o n c o m m i s s i o n e r , recently received an award for “outstanding service in election administration” from Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale, who supervises elections statewide.

Bro. Robert A. Sherwood Sr. died June 13 at age 77. He was born in Hastings on Nov. 9, 1931, graduated from UNL, where he met his future wife, Martha Lee Miller, whom he married in 1954. His Army service took him to Korea, after which time he began his career as an insurance executive. He remained an Army reservist and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Bro. Sherwood’s Masonic membership besides our Lodge included Sesostris Shrine Temple and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a past president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska. He was a devoted family man and a friend to birds and dogs. His family did not ask our Lodge to perform the Masonic Funeral Service, but several Brothers attended his funeral.

Liberty Lodge hopes all of our brethren have had a good summer so far. Its hard to believe that 2009 is half over.

BuSINESS MEETINGS AND DEGREE WORk

Our July business meeting was held on July 2. Bro. Paul Burk passed his Master Mason proficiency exam and we are glad to welcome brother Paul into the fraternity. The rest of the meeting went rather quickly, as no old or new business was discussed. It was announced that our Jordan Medal Holder, Jay McMaster will be celebrating his 90th birthday. A reception was held on Sat., Aug. 8 at the Nebraska Club. Congratulation to Bro. Jay! Congratulations are also in order for Bro. Adam Kohl who was married July 11.

On July 9, the degree of a Master Mason was conferred on Brothers Rusty Frazier and Abdul Kareem. Bro. Rustys’ father Randy is also a member of Liberty 300. It is good to see a son follow his father into Masonry. Brother Abdul is from Iraq. It has been mentioned

before that his stories about Iraq are extremely interesting. His stories about Masonry in Iraq and how the regime of Saddam Hussein viewed Masons gives a person a new appreciation about what freedoms we have in this country. Brother Abul is wanting very much to be able to speak about his country to us, share his experiences and let others know about that part of the world. At this time, he and his family are here on ‘refugee status”. He would very much like to stay, find employment, and generally fit into American society. If any brother can help with this request, please let us know. Liberty Lodge has been contacting various people concerning this matter and progress on this matter is quite slow.

We will be dark for the rest of the summer, except for the business meeting on Aug. 6. We will begin meeting again on a regular basis after the business meeting on Sept. 3. The fall promises to be a busy time. The lodge will once again be manning a concession stand at Nebraska football games, a fall picnic is being planned, table lodge, and a

one day conferral are also planned.I hope to see you at lodge!

fIREWORkS

Thanks to all of you who “shopped” for fireworks at our stand at Coddington and West A. Special thanks to Robert and Rod who had “sleepover” duty. It’s a lot of work, a lot of fun and we can take pride in knowing we added a lot of noise to the city!!

SOfTBALL

What is summer without a ballgame? Thanks Kali and Kristin (who play on the same softball team) for giving us a reason to hum “Take me out to the ballgame”. Way to go girls!!

When you read this, summer will be almost over, some Jobies will be getting ready for school or already have left - we hope you’ve enjoyed your summer and look forward to seeing you at meetings and activities this fall. Remember: “Time flies..whether you’re having fun or not” (copied) SO HAVE FUN!!

Bethel 27 has had a busy summer! From special meetings, to community service, Grand session, Installation and practice, practice, practice. The girls and council of Bethel 27 has been non-stop since before school was out. Read on to see what we’ve been up to.

MAJORITY CEREMONY

We ended the Spring term with a tribute to five of our most dedicated members. On May 30, we performed the Majority Ceremony for Sally Comer, Dehnia Herrick, Meghan Kirchhoff, CaraLynne Livingston and Emily Tooker. All five are PHQs of Bethel 27, several have earned the Lily of the Valley Award, and Dehnia served as Miss Nebraska Job’s Daughters for 2008-2009. Congratulations on your Majority Degree, and thank you for your years of service to our Bethel. We look forward to seeing you on the sidelines often, and may still call on you for some help now and then!

GRAND SESSION

No summer vacation for these hard working ladies! Bethel 27 practiced EVERYDAY to get ready for their competitions at Grand Session in Grand Island June 16-20. We worked hard and over-came many challenges (like part changes just 2 two weeks prior to competition, AHHHHH!) and brought home many awards and new honors. Some highlights include: Megan Kauphusman, Spirit Ambassador; Erika White, Grand Bethel Representative; Katie Chiplaski, Grand Bethel Representative; Sally Comer and Emily Tooker, Recipients of the Lily of the Valley Award; 4th Place

Team Ritual; 4th Place Large Bethel Choir; Plus several individual honors in Ritual, Music, and Arts and Crafts competitions. Not bad, especially with 4 of the 7 Daughters having never attended Grand before!

Bethel 27 is would also like to congratulate Miss Dehnia Herrick for her outstanding work at Grand Session and over the past year as Miss Nebraska Job’s Daughter. Dehnia, you have been a great attribute to this Bethel and have made us all so proud. You presided over your pageant with grace and confidence, all while making sure everyone had fun. Job well done!

INSTALLATION

After Grand Session, 27 kept the momentum going and held Installation of Officers on Sat., June 27. Due to some changes in membership, the Daughters elected that the office of Honored Queen be vacant this term, and that we invite our PHQs to pro-tem for meetings. The Fall 2009 Officers are as follows:Junior Princess.......Megan KauphusmanGuide...........................Erika WhiteMarshal.....Bethany Duncan, PHQChaplain.......Brianna Lyons, PHQLibrarian......Amanda Schumacher, PHQ*Recorder.....Angela Nickell, PHQ*5th Messenger.......Katie Chiplaski* = to be installed at a later date

Bethel 27 has a fun and busy term planned and looks forward to growing our Bethel in the months to come.

ECCO pARk

The members and council once again headed to our adopted ECCO park for its monthly cleaning. With safety gloves in place and a bottle of Purell on stand-by, those broken bottles and old newspapers were no match for this clean team! Good work girls! After the spruce-up, we all sat down for a little hang-

time with dinner at Burger King.

SHRINE BOWL

Bethel 27 will be enjoying all the Shrine Bowl day activities, and throwing in a trip to the pool too. After the parade, the Bethel 27 girls will be taking a quick swimming trip to the Uni-Place Pool! The perfect way to cool off before trekking down to Memorial Stadium for some summer time football.

GRAND VISIT

The “Sea of Adventure” Grand Family will be joining Bethels 27 and 31 for fun and games (literally) at their Grand Visit on July 26. The Bethel is eager to learn all about GG Mary, AGG Bruce, GBHQ Abbi, MNJD Kelli and MNC Charmel’s plans for the year. With ice cream for all, it’s sure to be a sweet time!

upCOMING EVENTS

August 1 – Fremont Bethel 15’s Barn Dance. What could be better than dancing in a barn?!? I don’t know either, so that’s why we’re headed to Fremont to join in their Barn Dance. Bring your boots, we’re going to get rowdy!

August 15 – Daughters of the Nile Luau. If the Hawaiian attire, excellent meal, and noble cause weren’t enough of a reason to attend the Nile Luau, the 5-star service that will be provided by Bethels 27 and 5 will make this an event not-to-miss!

August 16 – Regular Meeting. It’s that time again! We’re going to hit the ground running, hope you’re ready!

BuSINESS MEETING

On Mon., June 8, Bethel No. 60 members held a regular business meeting. Past reports were given by members and unfinished and new business was discussed. We signed a card for member, Holliann, who celebrated a birthday on June 15! Kelsey gave the Librarian’s report titled “Alive, Awake, Alert, Enthusiastic”.

GRAND SESSION

Daughters and adult leaders of Bethel No. 60 attended the annual “Hiking Through the Highlands” Grand Session held June 17-20 in Grand Island. We arrived in Grand Island on the evening of the 16 to settle into our rooms, take a dip in the pool, and enjoy a nice sit down dinner together before the busy bustle of Grand was to begin bright and early the next morning. On Wednesday, our Daughters were kept busy with team ritual competitions, arts and crafts and centerpiece competition check-in, robe inspections, choir competitions, practices, and fun night at the Island Oasis Water Park. Due to the stormy weather, the pool was closed down early. Later in the evening we had the chance to bond with other Bethel’s due to the stormy weather and tornado warnings which forced us into the tornado shelter at the hotel. Many members were heard saying that the tornado warnings only would add to the memories of Grand. Thursday began with two of our Daughters attending the Grand Family breakfast, followed by more competitions and the IOJD Knowledge Written test. At noon several members were found at the Royalty luncheon which honored the Past Honored Queens, Honored Queens, Princesses and Recipients of the Royal Purple Degree. There were more practices and members were given the chance to place their vote for their favorite centerpiece in the afternoon. In the evening we attended and assisted with the Grand Formal Opening Ceremony. The evening concluded with our annual Bethel pizza party! Friday began early with the Daughters attending

the Grand Bethel Meeting while some of the adults attended the Grand Guardian Council Business Meeting. In the evening we attended the Formal Banquet and Awards Ceremony. The Council is so proud of each one of the girls! Saturday wrapped up the week long events with the Installation of the new Grand Officers.

GRAND SESSION AWARDS

Bethel No. 60 received the Bethel Award of Distinction. Catherine and Kelsey received the HIKE Achievement Award and the Exemplary Leadership Award. Sarah received a Go-for-the-Gold award for signing three Daughters petitions. Erica placed fourth place in the Guide competition. Kelsey placed third in the Fifth Messenger Sr. Division competition. Kelsey, Erica, and Ashley placed third in the Small Choir Singing competition. Kelsey tied for second place in the Individual voice ages 17-20 competition. Arts and Crafts: Majority Member Carla received ribbons for sewing and photography, Ashley received a ribbon for her scrapbook, Kelsey received ribbons for her colored pencil drawing and her photo story, and Sarah received ribbons for her ceramic shoe and photography. Congratulations to the members, we are so proud of all your accomplishments!

BETHEL NO. 60 INSTALLATION

Bethel No. 60 held a closed installation ceremony on Sat., June 27 at 10:00 a.m. at College View Lodge. Catherine was installed as the 114th Honored Queen of Bethel No. 60. The following were also installed into office: Senior Princess, Kelsey, PHQ; Guide, Erica, PHQ; Marshal, Ashley; and Third Messenger, Sarah. The Honored Queen’s theme for the term is Dr. Seuss characters. She chose red, sliver, purple, and black as her colors. The service project Catherine chose for the term is to clean up Henry Park near our Bethel and to hold a toy drive for children

near Christmas. A wonderful reception followed the installation.

BETHEL 60 HOLDS MONTHLY fuNDRAISER

AT DON & MILLIE’S

On July 6 we held a fundraiser at Don & Millie’s. We would love for you to join us at our next fundraiser on Mon., Aug. 3 between 5-9 p.m. Stop in or drive-thru, say you are there to support “Job’s Daughters” and a portion of the money you spend will go to the Bethel. We hope you join us!

COOkOuT, AWARDS AND BETHEL CLEAN

Many members joined us on July 12 for an evening of food, fun, and friendship. The evening started off with our monthly Bethel clean, followed by a delicious potluck and hamburger cookout. We wrapped up the evenings events with an awards ceremony. Catherine, Erica, Kelsey, Ashley, and Sarah all received charms for collecting donations for HIKE during the spring term. Together the girls raised $188.00! Congratulations girls! Another check for the amount of $216 was also sent in from t-shirt sales and our Culver’s fundraiser held during the spring term.

BuSINESS MEETING

Bethel No. 60 held another business meeting this summer. Catherine gave a very heart felt outstallation speech, which was enjoyed by all. Penny Alderson was made Member of Honor of Bethel No. 60. Erica and Kelsey made it into the “Word Perfect Club” for the meeting. Erica shared a Job’s Daughters themed PowerPoint for the Librarian’s report. A coin march was conducted for the promotion, loan, and scholarship fund. A delicious reception followed the meeting. Thank you to the Green’s and the Johnson’s for providing the refreshments and decorations.
