Drone attacks last week onSaudi Arabia’s crude processing facility, the largest inthe world, have impactedhalf of the country’s crudeoil production and about 5%of the world supply. Following the attacks, on Monday,Global Brent crude futuresshot up more than 20% to$66.91 per barrel.
However, allaying Indianfears, Saudi Aramco officialstold oil companies that theattacks would not result in ashortage of supplies, the Ministry of Petroleum has said.
Ratings agencies, however, said India would see a risein prices due to the increasein the risk premium.
“Yesterday [September15], Saudi ARAMCO officialsinformed the Indian refinersthat there would be no shortage of supplies to them,” theMinistry of Petroleum andNatural Gas (MoPNG) said ina statement. “MoPNG isclosely monitoring the situation in consultation with Indian refiners and SaudiARAMCO.”
MEA condemns attacks
Ministry of External Affairsspokesperson Raveesh Kumar, in a statement, condemned the drone attacks.“We reiterate ourresolve to oppose terrorismin all its forms and manifes
tations,” the statement said.Saudi Arabia is a major
source of oil imports for India, accounting for nearly18% of the 226 million tonnesof crude the country imported during 201819, accordingto data with the Ministry ofCommerce.
India, which importsmore than 80% of its crudeoil requirement, is particularly vulnerable to geopolitical risks arising out of the oilproducing countries.
“While the oil marketsawait further updates on theresumption of supplies fromSaudi Arabia, they will nevertheless be nervous as any
retaliatory measures by Saudi Arabia and its allies willkeep the market on tenterhooks,” said K. Ravichandran, senior vicepresidentand group head, CorporateRatings, ICRA.
“As a result, oil pricesshould factor in sizeable geopolitical risk premium, which will be negative for Indian consumers,” he added.“Nevertheless, this impact islikely to be shortlived as themarket will rebalance swiftlyonce the tensions abate.”
