PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Pat Duffy
Our November meeting drew a great crowd and we received some very informative information from ASHRAE Distin-guished Lecturer Dr. Stanley Mumma. This was Stanley’s second trip to visit our chapter. Bill Garvey also conducted our annual sponsor appreciation night and handed out the ASHRAE commemorative coins, congratulations to everyone and thank you for your continued support. Our monthly meetings have consistently shown an increase in attendance since the Chapter decided to begin issuing PDH credits to attendees. This is a great way to keep up your requirements for your PE license. The Chapter incurs a cost for doing so, and we have gotten to a point where we need to recover some of these costs. As a result, we are charg-ing $15.00 per non-Chapter member looking for the PDH credit. A non-member attending a meeting spends $45.00 to attend the meeting plus $15.00 for the credit, totally $60 per meeting. As a member, you receive this credit for FREE, and only pay $35 to attend. That means the $40 Chapter membership pays for itself after only two meetings, which is well worth it! Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 and it will be a joint meeting with ASPE Boston Chapter. The meeting topic will be on Solar Hot Water Systems and the meeting is going to be held at The Embassy Suites in Waltham. Please make sure to get your RSVP into William Tang and sign up. On another note, we will soon be moving to online electronic payments for the monthly meetings. We hope to have this ready for the December meeting, but at the latest it will be available for the January meeting. This change will help to speed up the check-in process. Cash or check will still be accepted at the door for a period of time while everyone gets used to the new system of payment. See you at the next meeting,
Pat Duffy, President

MEETING RECAP
By: Pat Duffy
Our November 8th monthly meeting turned out well, we had over 90 people in attendance for the meeting. Those mem-bers that attended the meeting and signed the PIE sign-in sheet will receive a 1.5 PDH certificate.
The meeting was started with Bob Persechini giving a presentation and update on the Boston Chapter's 100th anniver-sary Gala celebration to be held this August. The event is expected to have 700 people in attendance with food and live music to be held at the Marriott Copley Place. The chapter has been contacting local companies with the opportunity for sponsorships and the response has been great. If you would like to sponsor the event please contact Bob, Darcy Car-bone, or myself.
Bill Garvey presented the ASHRAE Research Promotion donors with their ASHRAE Commemorative Coin. We thank all of our members and corporations for their continued support of ASHRAE Research Promotion.
The meeting was attended by Joe Furman the ASHRAE Region I Assistant Regional Chair and Treasurer to give an up-date on what is happening in ASHRAE at the Society and Regional levels. Joe was the past president at the Connecticut ASHRAE chapter and it was great to have him join us for the meeting. The presentation began after our Chapter business, and ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Stanley Mumma gave his presentation on the Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS): Design and Field Experiences. Stanley kept the meeting interesting and full of educational material, a lot more information than he could get through in the allotted time. It was great to have Stanley back to our Chapter to enlighten and educate our members. His complete presentation will be avail-able on the chapter website soon.

Historian Column By John Morrill
As HVAC professionals, we are continually being challenged with solutions to the ever expansive issue of climate change, or it has been called and denied by those who would refute modern scientific findings, “global warming”.
The “green” revolution, LEEDS certification, emissions, IAQ, etc are just a few of the myriad of “buzzwords” that signify the almost daily evolution of our craft. We are called upon through our expertise as environmental engi-neers research and development professionals, HVAC sales professionals and product application specialists to solve the cause and effect of this environmental pandemic.
The following represent excerpts from “The Discovery of Global Warming” by Spencer Weart:
People have long suspected that human activity could change the local climate. Ancient Greeks and 19th century Americans debated how cutting down forests might bring more rainfall to a region, or perhaps less. The discovery of the ice ages in the distant past proved that climate could radically change over the entire globe, which seemed vastly beyond anything mere humans could evoke.
In 1896, a Swedish Scientist published a new idea. As humanity burned fossil fuels such as coal, adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, we would raise the planet’s temperature. Most thought that it was obvious that puny humanity could ever affect vast climate cycles. In the 1930’s people realized that the United States and the North Atlantic region had warmed significantly during the previous half century. Only one lone voice, the amateur G.S. Callendar insisted that greenhouse warming was on its way.
In the 1950’s Callendars’ claims provoked a few scientists to look into the question with improved techniques and calcs. Their findings proved the existence of large buildups of carbon dioxide. Into the 1960’s scientists continued to find no need for policy action. In the early 1970’s, the rise of environmentalism raided doubts about the benefits of human activity for the planet.
By 2000, some predicted an unprecedented global warming. Their worries first became apparent and also caught widespread attention resulting from the summer of 1988, which was the hottest on record (most since have been hotter).
In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) was more confi-dent than ever that humans were changing the climate.

Winter is coming. This is the time of year where we start getting serious with ASHRAE in the Boston Chapter, and especially with the Student Activities Committee. Events are being planned as we speak…or, as I write. Stay tuned!
Information is now available regarding the 2012 ASH-RAE Student Design Competition. Please go to Student Zone on the ASHRAE.org website to learn more about the competition and to register your team. If you plan on entering a team, please let me know as soon as possible so I can arrange for members of the Boston Chapter to be valuable resources. Good luck!
The Boston Chapter will present the New Product & En-ergy Show in April of 2012. Though it may seem like a long way away, it’s important that I mention it now. The show will include a section for student booths. I’d like each of the (5) student chapters to have a booth with an HVAC-related project on display. The plan is to organize a competition between the student booths and have prizes for the winners. There will be more information to fol-low but please be thinking of ideas over the next couple of months.
A large package arrived at my office this week from ASHRAE Society. The packaged contained learning ma-terials to assist as the Student Activities Committee as we reach out to local elementary, middle, and high school students. The Society goal is to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to help students bet-ter understand the principals behind the engineering in-dustry. I’d like to coordinate two visits to local schools, K-12, during this ASHRAE season. If anyone would like to help, or has a connection to a local school, please con-tact me.
Please drop me a line at [email protected] if you’re inter-ested in helping out with the Student Activities Committee or to suggest ideas for student activities. See you in December.

DOAS Revisited The November meeting was well attended for Stanley Mumma’s presentation on Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems. Due to the vast amount of information on the subject and the time constraints of our meeting, I thought a recap of Dr. Mumma six points of support for DOAS would be beneficial to the chapter. The six points are located on Dr. Mumma’s website dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS), along with many articles and research papers.
1. It is almost impossible to verify that the ASHRAE ventilation standard 62.1-2007 has been met with an all-air system.
2. Therefore a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) is required for verifiable ventilation air distribution.
3. Once the use of DOAS is in place, it is one small step to decouple the space sensible and latent loads by sup-plying dry Outdoor Air (OA) at a low (45-50 F) Dew Point Temperature (DPT). This results in a significant improvement in the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), with a potential savings to US businesses of $208 billion/year (in 1996 dollars when the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $8,000 Billion) through reduced medical expenses and lost productivity. (source: LBL) Note: The US GDP had grown to over $14,454 Billion/yr by the end of the fourth quarter 2009.
4. That leaves sensible only cooling for the parallel system since all of the moisture is removed with the ventila-tion air, eliminating high humidity conditions.
5. There are many design choices for the parallel space sensible cooling system. At this site, ceiling radiant cool-ing panels (CRCP)/chilled ceiling or chilled beams are favored. With the DOAS-Radiant system, contami-nants generated or released in one space are not distributed throughout the building by the HVAC system.
6. THE BENEFITS OF THIS APPROACH: This mechanical system design concept, when compared to the con-ventional all air VAV system, results in lower first and operating costs, provides superior IAQ and thermal & acoustical comfort, reduces the hazard of a biological or chemical attack in the building, reduces the required plenum depth, and is easier tobalance and maintain. The challenge of conforming to ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007 in an energy efficient manner has led some HVAC practitioners to the conclusion that using dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) in conjunction with sensible cooling at terminal units offers the best solution.
For those who missed the presentation or just want more information, I’ve attached Dr. Mumma’s website dedicated to
DOAS; http://doas.psu.edu/

Sustainability Column By Jim Armstrong
Sustainability has been traditionally driven by the architects with the engineers following behind. Engineers are conser-
vative by nature and therefore change is not easy. Massachusetts has unseated California as the #1 state in the country
for energy efficiency by the ACEEE (American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy). This is the first time Massa-
chusetts has been ranked above California. This means the legislature gets it, the business owners now get it, and many
of our members also get it. So using energy efficiency as a portion of what you deliver can increase your bottom line. In
Massachusetts the MassSave (www.MassSave.com) program is struggling to spend all the incentive $ that they have
been given so I challenge you to go after them. Although Energy Efficiency only covers one portion of the sustainable
portfolio it is the one that has economic consequences for your customers and you as a designer. So don’t be afraid to
change embrace change as it will help you grow your business.
The sustainability committee will start our conference calls in shortly and we will be looking for members to assist us in
developing our objective. Our objective is to educate our membership in sustainability. Thinking with the end in mind
and balancing the systems to meet the loads of the buildings.

SOCIETY NEWS ASHRAE Provides Guidance on the “How-To’s” of Energy Audits
ATLANTA—Seeking to promote best practices and offer a “how-to” approach, ASHRAE has released updated guidance on building energy audits. While energy audits are a commonly used component of the industry, there is great diversity in the services delivered to customers, and little industry standardization. The second edition of “Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Au-dits” promotes best practices, provides “how-to’s” and fills a void in available information for engineers, building own-ers, managers and government entities. The new publication includes time-saving tips for energy auditors, how to hire an auditor, what to ask for in a comprehensive audit report and how to build a successful energy efficiency retrofit team. “As we work to reduce energy consumption in our commercial buildings, we want to ensure that recommendations are cost effective, technically feasible, maintain safety and comfort and result in significant energy savings” Jim Kelsey, a member of Technical Committee 7.6, Building Energy Performance, and who oversaw the writing of the updated publi-cation, said. “This volume focuses on how to improve energy audit best practices. Providing the best audits that we can will help move the industry forward to net zero buildings.” Additionally, the publication addresses how to build a successful team, analytical methods, successful approaches to site visits, incorporating on-site measurements, economic evaluation of measures and how to organize an energy audit report that promotes action on the part of building owners and managers. It includes many tips for conducting energy audits and reviewing results prepared by others. For example, the top things to check for in when reviewing an audit report include verifying that:
•proposed measures are feasible and appropriate for the building;
•proposed measures meet applicable building codes;
•data are internally consistent;
•savings estimate methods follow established principles and methods;
•estimates of potential energy savings are reasonable compared to quick estimates and historical energy use;
•proposed cost estimates are reasonable relative to field experience;
•interactions between EEMs are identified and addressed;
•recommendations and report meet the project scope, goals and client’s needs;
•any financial discussion includes current and viable mechanisms available per the tax structure, location, and motivations of the client.
Another benefit of the new publication is a greatly expanded section of forms and template analyses, including “live” Excel spreadsheets, checklists and equipment-specific forms suitable for field collection of detailed commercial building data, to name just a few.
“Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits, Second Edition” is available in the ASHRAE bookstore, www.ashrae.org/bookstore, for $99 ($84, ASHRAE members). Or, contact ASHRAE Customer Service at 1-800-527-4723 (United States and Canada) or 404-636-8400 (worldwide), fax 404-321-5478, to order.
