NDP CALLS FOR ACTION ON NUTRITION NORTHALL CANADIANS DESERVE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE NUTRITIOUS FOOD: NDPFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMay 26, 2015OTTAWA – As the Conservatives have failed to ensure that Northerners have secure access to nutritious and affordable food; NDP MPs are again taking concrete action to fix the Nutrition North Program and calling Conservatives to act immediately to include the 50 plus communities in Nutrition North.As part of their Respect the North Campaign, NDP MPs Dennis Bevington (Western Arctic), Romeo Saganash (Abitibi--Baie-James--Nunavik—Eeyou), Niki Ashton (Churchill), Charlie Angus (Timmins--James Bay), Carol Hughes (Algoma--Manitoulin—Kapuskasing) and Jonathan Genest-Jourdain (Manicouagan) held a press conference today to announce their findings of the nearly 50 communities that are not included in the Nutrition North program. New Democrats are calling for immediate action to include the communities in the program.“The Nutrition North program’s current community eligibility criteria are not fair or accessible,” said Bevington. “Community eligibility is based on past usage instead of current need. As a result, there are isolated northern communities not benefiting from the subsidy, where access to affordable, nutritious food is an issue.”The NDP proposal includes a motion that would incorporate 50 isolated, fly-in northern communities that are not eligible for a full subsidy under current Nutrition North provisions; initiate a comprehensive review of the program with Northerners as full partners; create equitable program eligibility criteria for Northern communities based on their real circumstances; and work with all Northerners to develop a sustainable solution to food insecurity.A recent Auditor General report requested by the NDP found that the program had minimal impact on lowering food costs and lacked transparency or accountability.“People are going hungry, these 50 plus isolated communities must be included in Nutrition North immediately,” said Intergovernmental Aboriginal Affairs critic Romeo Saganash. “Nutrition North program eligibility must be more equitable so that funding reflects real circumstances that northerners are facing so that no Canadian has to go hungry.”Today’s press conference comes in addition to a petition created by the NDP to include the 50 plus fly-in communities noted in the Auditor General’s report not included in the Nutrition North program and a motion that will be tabled as part of an upcoming Opposition Day.- 30 -For More Information ContactDoug Johnson, Office of Dennis Bevington MP, 613-992-2131--POUR DIFFUSION IMMÉDIATE26 mai 2015PROGRAMME NUTRITION NORD CANADA : LE NPD LANCE UN APPEL À L’ACTIONOTTAWA – Les conservateurs n’ont pas été capables d’assurer aux habitants du Nord un accès sûr à des aliments nutritifs à prix abordables.
