What we are working on this week:

Reading: Our primary selection this week is “The Bremen Town Musicians.” The comprehension skill

we will be working on is identifying author’s purpose and understanding high frequency vocabulary and

sight words. The comprehension strategy we will be working on is working with story structure. We are

also going to continue or work on identifying the main idea of a passage and supporting details. The

Genre is Fairy Tale.

AR: In order to stay on track to meet their AR goals, children should be taking (AND passing at an 80% or

higher) 2-3 AR books a week! Your child should have come home with new AR books in their reading

range today. I will be sending home a progress report next week that shows where your child is in

regards to meeting their goal.

Spelling: We are working on reading and spelling words with s and es at the end.

consonants).

Writing: We will be continuing with our narrative writing unit this next week.

This past week students finished their drafts, and we conferenced individually and worked through the

editing process. This coming week students will be finishing up final copies and starting to publish! (For

the narrative writing process students started by making a plan where they filled out a story map. The

story map helps them to identify their characters, choose a setting, and identify what the problem and

solution will be in their story. Then they moved on to creating drafts by writing their beginning, middle

and ends to their narratives. After the editing process they create final copies and publish their work!)

We will continue learning about the “Four Traits of Writing” and the role those traits play in our writing.

Those traits are Ideas, Organization, Style, and Conventions. To help with spelling I made every child a

sight word dictionary where they are beginning to document sight words and high frequency vocabulary

words that they use frequently in their writing. The sight word dictionary will be used as a tool that kids

can independently look back to for the correct spelling of a word while they are writing. At this point in

the year my expectation is that students always begin their sentences with a capital letter, and that they

always end their sentences with a punctuation mark.

*During our writing time I like to check in with every child each day, and conference with every child at

least once each week. Since there is so much to read with these narrative stories, I would love if I could

have a few parent volunteers who are willing to help out during our writing block! I could use parents to

read through children’s drafts with them, and help with correcting spelling, grammar, and conventions. I

could also use parents to help children with their planning process. Our writing time is from 11:50am-

12:50pm every day. If you are interested in helping out, please email me and I will add you to my

calendar! I truly appreciate your support!

Science Unit- Habitats: We will continue our work on habitats. In class, our focus will be on ocean and

polar habitats. In the STEM lab, students will learn about rainforests, deserts, and the Savanah. Today in

class we made polar habitat snow globes and took notes about different polar animals, and in STEM kids

made desert cactus hotels!

I added several new articles on your child’s front row account that align with our Science Habitat unit.

Your child can log onto their front row account and work on the articles at home by using the link below.

Our class password is marrs9. Children are rewarded points on the program for reading the articles and

answering the comprehension questions, and I award children pride punches for their typed responses!

Math (In Mrs. Marchant’s Classroom) We continuing working on understanding addition and subtraction.

We are still learning how to write number sentences and solve story problems using addition

and subtraction

Addition Strategies – We learned different ways to add numbers

We are working on subtraction strategies. We will learn different ways to subtract from

numbers up to 18

We still working on understanding that the three digits of a three-digit number represent

amounts of ones, tens, hundreds

Please review essential vocabulary with your child/children:

Sum, more, fewer, doubles, near doubles, addend, ones, tens, hundreds (English)

La suma, más que, menos que, dobles, casi dobles, unidades, decenas, centenas (Spanish)

Students should be proficient at addition and subtraction facts through 20 before we start the

next quarter. Please spend some time working on your child’s proficiency. You can have your child

practice the math facts with games, activities, or worksheets. You can use the attached links on

the Foothills Web page to find appropriate Math activities.

Spanish (In Mrs. Marchant’s Classroom) Now that we are settled into the school year, I will be integrating more conversational Spanish into your child’s day. We will start having an afternoon meeting where your child will have more exposure to Spanish vocabulary and culture through games, songs, and activities!

Parent Volunteers:

Thank you for your interest in volunteering in the classroom! I could use people the most during my literacy block, from 9:30-11:10am Monday-Thursday and during writing from 11:50am-12:50pm. If you would like to volunteer please email me the day and time, and I will add you to my calendar. I truly appreciate your help in the classroom! *Please note that from 2:00-3:00pm every day your child is next door in Mrs. Marchant’s class for math in Spanish. (And every

other day from 3:00-3:30pm for science and social studies). Mrs. Marchant welcomes all parent volunteers as well! You do not

need to know how to speak Spanish to volunteer in her class. If you want to volunteer in Mrs. Marchant’s class while your child

is there from 2:00-3:00pm, just let me know so I can add you to the schedule!
