Summit Introduction
Welcoming Speech & Opening Remarks By Conference Producer
• Beyond PISA, reforming K12 education, remaking pathways, full subject-based banding and future challenges
• The future of many present jobs is very challenged, with automation forecast to take job tasks that are routinely analytical or manual. Retail sales remains the most common job, but as the pilot of Amazon’s checkout-free supermarket indicates, such jobs have over 90% chance of becoming automated in the very near future. Whilst many new jobs will be created, these will require an emphasis on different skills to those that are presently developed in conventional education. Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) will remain important. However, it is increasingly apparent that so-called ‘softer’ skills focused on creativity, decision-making and complex communication drawing on the arts will be ever more prized than they are at present. Those practising these new jobs will almost certainly leverage the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to augment their core skills. The question is how should we train the workforce and the professions moving forward? We need to prepare our children not to find a job, but to create one or more. Creativity, decision-making and communication skills lie at the centre of this quest, as does the ability to exploit technology.
• The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in education shows no signs of slowing down. Imagine the possibilities of each student having their own virtual-learning assistant, or bot powered by AI that can support a student throughout their studies, creating a personalized learning journey. Or, new assessment models that measure in real time as they happen and can adapt content accordingly?
• Balancing academic and corporate risks in a disruptive future• How to empower existing academic institutions: technological and corporate guidance needed• Deep learning, problem solving functional skills in a digital, automated workplace• How will education bring technical/vocational based education back into play• How is the future of work being investigated - are we investing in upgrading teaching content and resources to deliver the
essential capabilities?• Boom or bust? Embedding entrepreneurship in education in Asia• Top billionaire hedge funder, Ray Dalio, donated US$100 million to public schools in Connecticut in the US as part of a PPP
programme to help bridge social inequity. What about tapping potential Public-Private Partnership opportunities in Asia’s continuing educational reform in a win-win-win situation? Is there a role for private enterprises, EduTech players, educators and wealthy foundations?

• Technology has brought about new opportunities for both individuals and businesses. By 2020, experts predict that spending on digital transformation initiatives will surpass the $2 trillion mark. That translates to a tremendous amount of investment by companies across industry sectors.
• One of the keys to driving the people element of digital transformation is offering learning and development initiatives that not only train existing staff but serve to attract in-demand new talent to the business. In April 2018, Temasek Polytechnic launched a new means of learning, focused on helping working adults achieve their need for constant upgrading and skills re-development. The Micro-Learning Courses (or MLCs) allow individuals to learn at their own time and pace, on any mobile device. In this session, Temasek Polytechnic will share how they have empowered and enabled a new way of learning through MLCs to help companies and individuals acquire new skills, pertinent to help them stay relevant in the face of digital transformation.

Smart Learning And Smart Working In The Age Of Digital Disruption
Building Efficacy in Learning Technologies
Enhancing Student Learning Experience Through Curriculum Transformation And Innovative Pedagogies In The Digital Age
• Focusing on a broad-based holistic curriculum transformation within the Higher education context. Parallel to curriculum transformation we need to examine the knowledge, skills and attitudes teaching staff need to thrive in a digital age. Examine student development and capabilities required by students to tackle the complexities of the learning landscape that is becoming increasingly digital, connected, and ambiguous.
• Curriculum transformation in a digital age: broad-based education, holistic education, life skills, active learning and blended learning, assessment for learning
• The knowledge, skills and capabilities teachers need to thrive in a digital age such as digital fluency, technology affordances, learning analytics and feedback as feed-forward.
• The knowledge, skills and capabilities learners need to thrive in a digital age such as digital literacies, self-regulated learning and self-assessment.
• As digital transformation rapidly presents new challenges to all sectors, what can higher education learn from the world of work, and what can the world of work learn from education? Elizabeth Chan from Steelcase will share some key workplace and cultural trends, with a focus on the physical environment and smart and connected technologies, inviting new opportunities to evolve the education experience.

Designing For Future-Oriented Blended Learning
• The approach we use, which is Team Based Learning (TBL) and how we the idea of the VR Escape room originates from the work we have done the last 6 years. Our work in TBL is well documented and we have developed our online learning resources using a platform called ‘Decktoys’ and we use the platform ‘Intedashboard’ to provide us the analytic data to help us understand the gaps in our students’ learning.
• Our focus will be on the idea of using the ‘Escape Room’ concept in our application process and invariably share how we develop lessons in class that uses a ‘breakout’ box.

Implementing Smart Classrooms: What Kind Of Learning Spaces Promote Collaborative Learning
• When considering learning environment, it is important to consider how the digital space blend the physical learning space to provide an optimal learning environment. More importantly, we emphasize on the fit of pedagogy for meeting the learning outcomes, allowing for both online learning to be blended with face to face collaborative learning experiences. At Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), there is an institution wide development of smart classrooms, also known as Applied and Collaborative Learning Environment (ACE). This type of smart classroom consists of computer on wheels, with capability of connecting display with each other wirelessly. Distributed microphones are provided in different clusters of tables to enable active discussion. We have also developed a learning space that we call Lectorial, that facilitate students to both attend to short lectures and engage in regular discussions.
• Alongside the development of the infrastructure, we have different initiatives of faculty development sessions demonstrating how the technology and learning environment support their teaching. We catered training in various formats such as exhibition day, regular workshops, and individual consultation to those who have booked the rooms. Pedagogy such as Team-Based Learning are also introduced alongside with how the environment can be used to support such pedagogy.
• A research study has been conducted involving more than 250 students and faculty which focuses on the perceptions and experiences of the users in the smart classrooms. Questionnaires used include Active Learning Classroom Survey to determine classroom seating needs and preferences of students. Another study has been done with 414 students on the evaluation of Lectorial and how students have experienced learning in large group settings. The findings and challenges in the implementation of smart classrooms will be shared.
