THE MAKING OF A SCIENTIST: AN UNLIKELY JOURNEY

Mario R. Capecchi is a Nobel laureate and Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics and Biology at the University of Utah. He is best known for his pioneering work on the development of gene targeting in mouse embryo-derived stem cells. This technology allows scientists to create animal models for many human diseases, including cancer.

In 2007, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Oliver Smithies and Martin Evans "for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells.

Her first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, won a National Book Critics’ Circle Award. It chronicles the trials of an epileptic Hmong child and her family as they attempt to navigate the gulf between Hmong and American medical systems. The book is taught as an example of both literary journalism and as a casebook for cross cultural sensitivity. Anne Fadiman edited The American Scholar for seven years and edited several books. She has also published a best-selling collection of essays: Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader, a witty ode to everything book.

Paul Alan Cox Director of the Institute of Ethnomedicine

Paul Alan Cox is a native of Utah and Wyoming whom Time named one of 11 Heroes of Medicine in 1997 for his work in ethnobotanical drug discoveries. He has won numerous awards, including the Goldman Environmental Prize for his efforts in preserving Samoan rain forests, which he wrote about in his book Nafanua: Saving the Samoan Rainforest .

Dr. Cox is currently Director of the Institute of Ethnomedicine in Jackson’s Hole, Wyoming. He founded and served as director of Seacology, a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the ecology and cultures of islands around the world. He has also served as Distinguished Professor at Brigham Young University, Hawaii, as Professor and Dean at Brigham Young University and as Gustaf Professor of Environmental Biology at Uppsala, Sweden. His current ethnobotanical research focuses on finding new therapies for neuodegenerative illnesses such as ALS and Alzheimer’s.

Branding, Program, and Giveaways

From its early days as a rough railroad town to its current status as an outdoor, high-adventure hotspot,

Ogden has always been action-packed. But the Wasatch Mountains, those are the natural draw to this

great city. They are stunning. They are fun. They are famous. And, nestled at the foot is Weber State

University. We incorporated this scenic location that we are so proud of into the NCUR 2012 logo.

Facebook – We had 346 “likes” on our Facebook page which we used primarily for

announcements leading up to the conference and promotion of events during the conference.

Twitter – We had 75 followers on Twitter which we used to announce events and promotions

leading up to and during the conference. The #ncur2012 hashtag generated a lot of activity from

conference goers sharing the sessions they attended as well as arranging places to congregate in

Ogden in the evenings.

NCUR 2012 Local Arrangements Information

Weber State University Local Arrangements: Organization, Areas of Special

Emphasis, Program Changes, Attendance, Mobile Website

The NCUR 2012 Executive Committee, chaired by OUR Director John Cavitt, established an extensive

operational structure of sub-committees to plan and successfully execute the conference. The

committees include:

Abstract Review

Administration/Registration

Communications/Web Development

Entertainment/Recreation/Excursions

Campus Facilities

Graduate School Fair

Mobile Website

Oral Sessions

Plenary Sessions

Program

Sponsorship/Donations/Advertising

Sustainability

Transportation

Technology

Visual and Performing Arts

Volunteers

We will not discuss all of these areas, but will focus on key topics and changes from previous years.

Grad Fair/Program Book Ad Space

We offered ad space, booth space and booth space/ads to Graduate schools. The following is a break-

down of the cost of each. We also offered a 10% discount for the purchase of a booth and ad space.

Also there were early bird discounts. Ad space the front and back inside cover; we charged $1,050

(early) and $1,100 (late). For full page ads we charged $775 (early) and $825 (late). For ½ page ads 4.25

x 11 or 5.5 x 8.5; we charged $520 (early) and $570 (late). For ¼ page ads 4.25 x 5.5 or 8.5 x 2.75; we

charged $260 (early) and $310 (late). Lastly, for the grad fair booths we charged $260(early) and $310

(late).

Abstract Submission and Review

We decided to continue with the process that Ithaca College implemented for abstract submission and

review with one change to the review process. If the reviewer rejected an abstract, it was marked as

“RejectedOnce” and would be reviewed by the abstract coordinator for that subject area. The

coordinator could either override the rejection and approve the abstract or confirm the rejection and

mark the abstract as “RejectedFinal.”

We also required abstract reviewers to make comments on the submissions which were included with

the acceptance or rejection emails back to the students and mentors. Before a reviewer could reject a

submission, they had to enter comments to indicate the rationale for the decision. Reviewers were

asked to make their comments constructive in nature. These were met with much appreciation by the

students and mentors.

Registration

We continued the suggestion from previous NCUR hosts to have a separate store for “extras” including

t-shirts, excursions, and host events. This allows the “bill my institution” option only for the conference

registration fee. Students or coordinators can purchase the extras with a credit card at any time after

they are registered for the conference.

We continued the system to have a “handshake” where students were required to accept or decline

presentation of their abstract. We encountered a software programming issue where registrations that

were voided by the student and then re-registered, did not have this confirmation. This problem was

discovered before the conference and we were able to confirm participation, however some of these

students were not included in the printed program.

Tables were open in the registration area where we could process on-site registrations, make or edit

name badges, assist with scheduling questions, or other issues which required the use of the NCUR

software.

Hotel Accommodations

We contracted with 22 hotels in the area including some up to 40 miles from campus. All of the hotels

close to campus reported that they sold all or almost all of the rooms they had during the conference.

The hotels farther from campus reported a very strong pick-up as well. The visitor’s bureaus for Weber

and Davis counties both passed to us how pleased all of the hotels were with the conference and their

willingness to participate in another conference like this if given the chance.

Room Scheduling

To ensure that we had adequate space for all oral presentations, we reserved the classrooms in three

central buildings which provided us with ample rooms for the expected number of oral presentations.

45

Like Ithaca, we noticed an increase in the percentage of poster presentation submissions, so we did not

need all of the rooms we reserved. We retained extra rooms for emergency scheduling to accommodate

Weber State University Local Arrangements: Organization, Areas of Special

Emphasis, Program Changes, Attendance, Mobile Website (Continued)

46

walk-in registrations or missed presentations. Any of those schedule changes were posted on the

mobile website which we promoted as the place to look for those changes.

Host Activities

We planned two activities for NCUR 2012. Thursday night was “Notorious 25th Street” where attendees

would receive a voucher for food from one of the participating vendors on 25th street. The event would

culminate at the Union Station with a live band and dancing. Friday night was “Purple Crush” where

attendees would receive pizza, soda, and a dance party. Due to extremely low registrations leading up to

the conference, we changed the structure of the events so that no fee was charged.

On Thursday night, rather than pay for the event and get vouchers to use on 25th street, we did not

charge for the event and worked with the vendors in the area to ensure that they each had an NCUR

special item or discount only available with your NCUR badge. For Friday night, we collaborated with our

WSU student association to open the event to the WSU student population as well as the NCUR

attendees. We provided numerous activities such as bowling, billiards, spray tattoos, a photo booth and

an oxygen bar in addition to the pizza, soda and dancing.

Sustainability

In keeping with Weber State University’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, we are working to

reduce our energy consumption by upgrading systems all over campus to become more energy efficient.

From our heating systems, to lighting, to using solar power to heat swimming pools, we are reducing our

greenhouse gas emissions and saving hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in energy costs.

To this end, we provided each attendee with a refillable aluminum water bottle and refilling stations

around campus to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. Other conference items such as lanyards and

conference bags were made from 75% post-consumer waste. The menu during the conference was

designed by Sodexho to take advantage of local vendors to source foods.

Mobile Website

Weber State University students, under the supervision of Alan Livingston, created a mobile website for

NCUR 2012 which allowed conference attendees to search the schedule of events and view schedule

changes. http://m.weber.edu/ncur2012/ In addition, the developers added a “My Agenda” feature

which allowed users to select presentations to add to a personalized agenda so that they did not have to

mark and search through the program book in order to recall which presentations they wanted to

attend. Scott Bassford was able to easily accommodate the small amount of programming needed to

allow that functionality.

We also used the mobile website to post trivia questions, which we promoted on Facebook and Twitter.

The first students to answer these questions received prizes at the information booth. The questions

asked the students to find information about Ogden, WSU, or NCUR.
