NCRCC General Membership Meeting Minutes – 9/10/2020

Stan Kulesa

NCRCC Secretary

The meeting was called to order at

6:28 PM by President Bob LaFlamme. The meeting was held at the NCRCC flying field in Ellington and attended by 23 members and 7 guests. President’s Report: Bob LaFlamme welcomed the meeting attendees. Bob reported that he brought along a computer and printer so that members needing new or replacement badges can be helped. He asked that those in need please see him after the meeting. Bob announced that the October meeting will be held on Saturday (10/3/2020) at the flying field. The club will host a breakfast served by the Executive Committee at 8:00 AM with COVID-19 safety measures in place. Members are urged to wear masks and bring along a chair to maintain social distancing. The meeting will begin at 9:30 AM. The rain date, if needed, will be Saturday (10/10/2020) so Bob asked the

members to please check the club website for the most current information. Also, as the result of a recent donation of assorted R/C models, engines, and equipment, NCRCC will host a short “attic-clearing auction” and sell off the donated items; all proceeds from the auction will benefit the club. Bob asked for a motion to approve the August general membership meeting minutes which appeared in the newsletter. A motion was made, seconded, and passed. Vice President’s Report: Mike Maznicki reported that he is in the process of reviewing the NCRCC Instructors List and took the opportunity to confirm the continued commitment with several of the instructors in attendance. Mike also asked for others to step up and volunteer as instructors. Those interested should contact Mike. Mike noted that we have two prospective members that will introduce themselves later in the meeting and that we have two prospective members that will be eligible for a membership vote later in the meeting. Secretary’s Report: Stan Kulesa reported that NCRCC currently has 192 members. Guests tonight included Richard Niezabitowski, Edward Case, Paul Balint, John Blossick, Sarah Nilsson, Kent Nilsson, and Alene Lang. Stan reported that informal feedback from the membership

concerning the new website has been positive. In August 2020 we had 1,834 views of the website. Stan reminded the members that the password to the „Members Only‟ pull-down is the flying field‟s gate combination. Stan reported that through the new website‟s „Contact Us‟ feature a donation of two model sailboats was made. Both of these items will be sold and the proceeds will go to the club. A new feature that is going to be added to the „Field Amenities‟ section is an aerial view of the flying field and surrounding area shot by a drone with a camera; Stan thanked Grant L- for this contribution toward improving the website. We are still in need of people willing to take photos during club meetings and events so please volunteer. (Your cell phone camera will suffice!) Treasurer’s Report:

Len Marchese provided the members with a financial report through August 2020 and reviewed income, expenses, and account balances. Len reminded the members that the club will be launching its 2021 membership renewal campaign in November. The club will try using email communication in lieu of US Mail (for those members with an email address). Those members without email addresses will continue to receive the hard-copy communication through US Mail. To test the response rate of the email communication, the club is planning to send an email blast test message in mid-September. All members receiving the email blast communication are urged to promptly

respond. Len asked for a notice requesting members‟ rapid responses be posted on the website. Activities Director Report: Irv Thurrott began his report by donning a new tee-shirt he received touting his aeromodelling interests. He explained that it was a recent gift he‟d received during his 80th birthday celebration a few days earlier. The members present gave Irv a joyful round of applause. Irv asked if any members wanted to offer any input on upcoming events. Dennis T- explained that a new Contest Director is needed for the 2021 Warbirds over Ellington event because Dennis will be speaking at a B-52 conference next year during the weekend the Warbirds event normally takes place. Dennis is most willing to work with and support his replacement. Ideally, Dennis is hoping for an individual who holds an AMA Contest Director certification, lives locally (CT or MA), and loves warbirds. If you are interested, please reach out to Dennis T-. Irv reported that he noticed the COVID-19 signage at the flying field had fallen. To address this, he built a special conduit frame for added strength and durability. Irv asked the membership for a recommendation on how many of these reinforced signs should be posted and, following some input, it was decided that three such signs were needed. Irv thanked Peter Tani for stepping up and volunteering to replace him as Activities Director.

Irv noted that he would be willing to periodically take photos although he pleaded with fellow members to volunteer to help with this function. Liaison Officer Report:

Mark Paradise announced that he has assorted club merchandise available for purchase including hats, polo shirts, bumper stickers, etc. He asked members to see him at the meeting or to contact him by visiting the club website. Mark initiated a raffle for a Horizon Hobbies Blade Heli (Mano S2). He was unable to sell a sufficient number of tickets and will hopefully complete the raffle drawing at the next meeting. Mark proudly presented new member Will T- with his solo certification. The members present offered Will congratulatory applause. Field Marshall/Safety Officer Report: Art Usher reported that the field is in excellent shape and thanked the mowing team for their awesome efforts. Art pleaded with members to use extra caution when accessing/ leaving the field as the first/ last person. He reminded all to spin the combination lock so that the combination is not unintentionally revealed. Newsletter Editor Report: Peter Tani reported that good progress has been made in perfecting the club membership‟s email list. While this type of work is constantly ongoing, it is

particularly important now because the club will be sending a test email blast in mid-September and hopes to use email communication for the 2021 membership renewal campaign. Peter noted that we have had a good number of successes with fixes to email addresses but some that were not successful. Work continues on this project. Peter announced to the membership that he would be willing to take the Activities Director role that Irv Thurrott will be vacating. Peter noted that these are exceptionally big shoes to fill but he‟s committed to doing his best. The members present gave Peter a round of applause for volunteering for this critical role. New Members: Bob LaFlamme and Mike Maznicki asked prospective new members Sarah Nilsson and Paul Balint to introduce themselves to the membership present. Bob and Mike then presented Richard Niezabitowski and John Blossick for membership votes. The membership present unanimously approved both for membership. Old Business: Stan Kulesa reported on the work being done by the ad hoc committee reviewing and updating the NCRCC By-Laws. The committee (Joel L-, Dennis T-, Gershon T-, and Stan) has met several times already and there‟s been much lively debate and great progress. Stan noted that since this is such a hugely important project for the club

that he solicited more volunteers to join the committee. Bob LaFlamme echoed this sentiment and urged the membership to consider volunteering. Mike D-, Mark Paradise, and Buddy B- raised their hands to volunteer and have been added to the ad hoc committee. New Business: Bob S- announced that he has made progress in getting indoor flying at the East Windsor Sports Dome arranged again. Those interested will need to be mindful of COVID-19 related precautions. Bob is planning on indoor flying availability on Fridays beginning November. Please connect with Bob S- for additional details. Stan Kulesa noted that the club by-laws state that a Nominating Committee consisting of three

members shall present a slate of candidates to the Executive Committee by November 1. We are looking for volunteers to work on the Nominating Committee. Joel L- volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee. Nominations will be made for the Executive Committee and for the Board of Directors. The term of each Executive Committee member is for one year and the term for each member of the Board of Directors is two years. If you are interested in running for a club officer position or if you are willing to volunteer for the Nominating Committee, please contact Stan or Joel L- as soon as possible. Buddy B- asked about our cold weather meeting location. Bob LaFlamme noted that although we have met at the Somers

Library for cold weather meetings, that meeting facility would not be available through the remainder of 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Bob went on to advise that while no definitive decision has been made, it‟s possible that the cold weather meetings beginning November will be virtual (Zoom) meetings. Mark Paradise noted that he has had some contact with the Broad Brook Opera House concerning that venue‟s availability. The meeting was adjourned at 7:16 PM. These minutes are respectfully submitted by Stan Kulesa, Secretary.

Activities Director’s Report – October, 2020

All -

Sincerest thanks to all the

NCRCC members, their families, and friends who helped out with NCRCC sanctioned events, club-only events, and club projects that occurred during my time as

Activities Director. The spirit of volunteerism over the years was spectacular.

The Mower Teams, Club Officers, and Contest Directors did excellent work that was truly appreciated. All club activities were successful due to their hard work and attention to detail.

Having reached the ‟80 year milestone‟ my memory, and attention to detail, is rapidly diminishing. This is the primary

Best wishes for the future of the club and the overall R/C Model Aircraft hobby.

See you at the field, as well as at meetings.

NCRCC Club member Charlie M- describes to fellow club member David A- the lineage of Dave‟s now electricfied and highly modified “Sig Fazer” currently on water floats. Was Charlie‟s and was build glow-powered with a “sister” ship and both by Al T-. Was initially flown off the snow and now a water-craft. The plans-built craft was modified for constant chord for ease of contruction as no “ribs” are shown on the plan.
