Summer Reading Programs: Who Chooses the Theme? ompass Live – April 1, 2009

description

The Collaborative Summer Reading Program (CSLP) began in 1987 when ten Minnesota regional library systems developed a summer library program for children. It has grown to a consortium of 47 states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries. Join Sally Snyder, the NLC's Coordinator of Children and Young Adult Library Services, and the current CSLP President, to learn all about how the CSLP works. NCompass Live - April 1, 2009.

Why is Nebraska a member?

More for your $ than doing it as a single state (huge bargain!)

Professional artwork by well-known illustrators

Know themes 2 years in advance – can start buying items in preparation (as you run across them)

Page 26: NCompass Live: Summer Reading Programs: Who Chooses the Theme?

More That We Gain:

Timeline is great – get manuals in October

Professional connections with librarians from all over the U.S.

Good way to start offering SRP to teens if you haven’t before – everything you need to get started

Page 27: NCompass Live: Summer Reading Programs: Who Chooses the Theme?

What Did We Lose?

“Collaborative” means give & take – you will gain so much but also lose some

There are 47 state (or parts of states) members, all gave up something – local control

The benefits far outweigh the loss
