Terminology of NCEANCEA - National Certificate of Educational Achievement.

Standards Based – Can they do it.

Levels – There are three L1 (replaced School Cert), L2 (6th Form Cert) and L3 (Bursary)

A Standard – A specific paper/unit of work. E.g. in Maths there is a Trigonometry Standard at each level. These are generally five digits long e.g. “91032: Trigonometry 1.7”

Credits – Each standard has a certain number of credits (targeting 80).

Grades - NCEA has Not Achieved, Achieved, Achieved with Merit, Achieved with Excellence

Internal v External – Tested during the term v November Exams

EndorsementEach level of NCEA has endorsement available. Endorsements occur where…

Endorsed with Excellence – gained over 50 credits at Excellence

Endorsed with Merit – gained over 50 credits at Excellence and Merit Combined.

This is a way of recognising those top performing students across all of their subjects.

Portal and Communication and AppParents are vital help for NCEA.

Students need to be consistently focussed and working.

Revision and preparation for assessment is vital.

Tracking their results (careful that they’re on course for passing)

L1 needs 80 credits (min) including 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy

L2 needs 60 credits (min)

L3 needs 60 credits (min)

University Entrance

• 3 x ‘UE’ subjects with 14+ credits

• L2 English and at least 14+ credits of Maths

Appeals and Other ChancesPrior to Assessment – Teacher should indicate when and what is in there.

- Some students will have very busy weeks.

After Assessment – Resubmission (tweaking at teacher discretion).

- Resit (another similar paper).

- Sickness or Bereavement

Appeal of Grade – Formal Process
