Important Announcement!!! August 16 CSS Car Show

We are rolling closer to this Saturday show date and the club is rallying to get the preliminary work done. Tom Noonan has accepted a new job in Texas. Since he will not be able to continue as car show chairman, Art Huhta and Roger Bacon will be sharing the chairmanship. Contact them if you have any questions about the work underway. The most important and immediate chore to do is gathering raffle prizes and goodie-bag gifts. Everyone in the club is asked to contact a local business for a donation. Restaurants can provide complimentary dinners. Retail stores can give gift coupons. Chevrolet dealers can offer service coupons. Please ask your favorite business for a donation. There is a prize donation solicitation letter on the CSS web site on the Hot News page. Go to http://corvettesupersports.com/frame/frameset.html for the CSS home page and then click on the Hot CSS News button. You can print it and show it to the business to validate your request. This letter shows the club tax identification. When you give it to a business, add your name, address and signature. Prize donations can be brought to our monthly meeting. Alternatively you can contact Marietta Darke, Art Huhta or Roger Bacon about where to deliver them. Thanks to Marge Huhta for providing admission tickets to the USS Midway Museum. Cruisers Corner Date Line June 28, 2008: Corvette Super Sports visits the USS Midway. On June 28th, 23 CSS members rode on a bus piloted by Robyne Camp to tour the USS Midway in San Diego harbor. The bus left on schedule at 10 am from North Orange County and arrived at the Midway about noon. Each family unit on the bus was given a survival pack prepared by Ginger Girvin. The trip to the midway was basically uneventful. Most of us were able to see things on the side of the road that we had never seen before because we either are the drivers or because of the height of the bus. Once we arrived at the Midway, the boarding process was very easy because we had a group reservation made 3 months ago. Our group tour included a self-guided tour using earphones and a play-back device that described each of the points of interest aboard ship. A group photo was taken before the tour began. After we arrived we were met by 6 more CSS members who caravaned from different locations. Did you know that the USS Midway, when it was on active duty, had a crew of 4,500 including 600 men in engineering and 225 cooks, that the mess hall baked 1000 loaves of bread a day, made 13,500 meals a day amounting to 10 tons of food a day, 3,000 potatoes a day, burned 100,000 gallons of fuel a day and averaged 260 gallons per mile? Did you also know that the ship weighs 69,000 tons, has engines that develop 212,000 horse power, has 2,000 feet of anchor chain, and is 1001 feet long and 258 feet wide ? This is truly an amazing fighting machine. It also has 18 decks, 18 foot tall propellers, 20-ton anchors, and a 4 acre flight deck. Although some thought that we would be able to do the tour very quickly, all agreed at the end that 4 hours was barely enough. The weather was perfect with blue skies a light breeze. Some found the canteen at the aft end of the ship and enjoyed some liquid refreshment. Ron and Geoff sat in a flight simulator and crashed multiple times. After 4 hours of learning, we gathered on the quay, counted noses and headed back to the bus. We then headed for San Juan Capistrano for dinner. It was on the trip back home after dinner (and after what must have been some fair amount of wine consumption) that some of our group started to unravel. Now I truly thought that the conversation was revolving around shoes. Several of the women were talking in hushed tones and then giggling and laughing hysterically. But I am sure I overheard them talking about a type of “flip-flop” sandal. I thought, what could be so interesting about shoes. Then I heard them talking about stitching our CSS logo on these shoes, and I am thinking how bizarre. Then I see Robyne laughing with tears in her eyes. I am thinking…did I miss something? I must have missed something because they then started talking about going all together to Victoria’s Secret to see if they had them in their sizes. Now they had my full attention. The conversation turned to shoes for men (I thought) until I heard someone comment that they were called some kind of hammock. Now I get it. The thongs they were talking about were not flip-flops!!!!! Now I see why the entire front half of the bus was laughing so hard. I wonder if I am going to be called upon to set up this buying spree as a club function? We arrived back home at the scheduled time of 8pm. All that rode on the bus said that they had a marvelous time, learned a lot and really enjoyed using the bus because we had such a good time and had the opportunity to talk together about all sorts of things. Many asked Robyne about the possibility of future trips on her bus to places like Laughlin, State Line, Santa Ynez and other places. After most of the participants left, some few stayed at the Girvin’s for additional libations.

The attendees on the bus were: Geno Atchison and his long time best friend, Roger Bacon, Jim and Elaine Cooper, Tom and Barbara Cuccio, Walt and Kathy Hollada, Ron and Karen DeBartolomeis, Geoff and Ginger Girvin, Garry and Shirley Jones, Doug Meeuwenberg, Gary Plehn and his daughter Shelley, Jennifer Spencer, Jill Teson, Dave and Donna Stewart and Diane Weist. I bet you can’t guess who was talking about the “shoes”. The group that caravanned down included: Greg and Chris Glodery, Scott and Renita Glover, Frank Martinez, Tim Person, and Mark and Andrea Taffolla came by Amtrak.
