Raven 2 Goes to CampRaven 2 just wrapped up Round one while living in the great city of D.C and working with Habitat for

Humanity. Raven 2 has traded in riding the metro in exchange for riding tractors and lawn mowers. They are

spending the first half of Round 2 working at Grove Point Girls Scout Camp in Earleville, M.D. Earleville is a

quiet town and we share the camp ground on the weekdays with no one besides a lot of bugs! Last Saturday we

kicked off the Round by helping girl scouts earn a nature badge. We spent the day taking the girls on nature

scavenger hunts, helping plant flowers and taught them about water sheds…what’s a water shed? Yea, that was

our first question too. Thus far at Grove Point we have been mowing lawns, painting, trimming hedges,

installing insulation and drywall in addition to of course moving branches from one place to another. In the

next few weeks we will also be helping fix up the cabins and we are excited to use the skills we learned on our

first project on this one!

Though there’s a lot of work to be done, there’s still a lot of time for some fun at the camp site. We’ve

been kayaking, playing basketball, hiking, having camp fires, “run dancing” and of course skipping rocks,

which is Rick’s favorite activity. And speaking of Rick he’s growing back the mullet and everyone is wearing

their seatbelts, so no worries there!

For the second half of our Round we will be spending two

weeks in Scranton PA setting up and helping with the Lackawanna

Heritage Bike tour. For the last week we will be heading back to goodold Perry Point to work for the City of Port Deposit. After completing

the first week of Round 2 we know its going to be a lot different then

Round one, but that’s the fun of AmeriCorps and were excited for the

up coming weeks!

Stretching- Warm Up and Cool Down:

Stretching is important during your warm up, before you run, because it increases bloodflow to the muscles. But stretching during

your cool-down may be even more important. After physical training, stretching helps to

remove lactic acid from the muscle, which inturn reduces muscle soreness. Which pro-motes better flexibility. Stretching afterwardsalso will help you relax.

Chelsea Rae with her team Wolf 4 Class XV

Alumni Spotlight: Chelsea Rae Rendleman

WUSTL Rendleman with TL Gehl last year

Chelsea Rae Rendleman, served as a Corps Member in Class XV

and a Support Team Leader in Class XVI at the Atlantic Region.

Recently, Chelsea Rae visited the campus and we were able to

catch up with her to find out her impressions on her service

year and what she is doing currently. Rendleman served as a

Corps Member on Wolf 4 in Class XV and Wolf Support Team

Leader.

How did you find out about AmeriCorps NCCC?

I grew up in a service driven family where I was taught the importance of contributing to my community

through participation and action. As a young girl the thought of joining the PeaceCorps intrigued me. It

wasn’t until I was going through college that the idea became more serious. My family thought I would

never make it, what with being so far away from home for the first time in my life! I attended K-College in

my hometown of Conway, Arkansas. A good friend of mine suggested looking into NCCC; his brother was a

Corps Member in Sacramento, CA at the time and later served as a Team Leader as well. I did my research

and read anything and everything I could find. I became instantly hooked! I developed a plan– NCCC

would be a great chance to serve away from home but not too far-if I thrived, the PeaceCorps would be my

next move.  I became a Corps Member in February 2009 and my jour-

ney with NCCC has only extended ever since.

What was the best part of your year?

As a Corps Member with Wolf 4– my team, no doubt! We has our good

and bad moments but overall we accomplished the impossible and

found life long friends in the process. I’m looking forward to our first, official reunion in July.

As the Wolf STL– Graduation! I was a wreck emotionally because I couldn’t have been more proud of

Chelsea Rae as a Corps Member

BUFFALO 4 SHOUT OUT:

Stay clear of Buffalo Four as they trail blaze, we’ve already left a

snake and a turtle dead in our wake. But we’re always sure to make

it back for dinner so Betsy (our wonderful cook) doesn’t get wor-

ried.

everyone. There were many great moments throughout the entire year, however, they all seemed to come

together as everyone graced the stage. Another best part of my second year was our STL family. We were

incredible and it would be an injustice if I didn’t mention them. They mean the world to me!

 What are you doing now?

I am continuing my career with NCCC . In the fall of my second year as the

Wolf Unit STL, I accepted a staff position as the Program Office Administra-

tive Assistant at the NCCC Campus in Sacramento, CA. My new job started

January 3rd. I’m still in the “getting my feet wet” stage-though I feel more

comfortable in my position and “Cali” location everyday.

Comments for Class XVII…

It is never too early to start Life After AmeriCorps (LAA) plans or research. It is terribly easy to become

sucked up in “Days of our AmeriLives,” but I promise the end will sneak up on you faster than you ever

expected. Get prepared!

One take away from Chelsea Rae’s words of wisdom is that we are into second round and these 10 months

fly by and that the service does not have to end in November— you can apply to be a Team Leader.

Team Leader applications close on August 1, 2011. Those who apply and are accepted will start as

Team Leaders in January 2012. The time will go quickly. It will be August 1st before you know it. Think

about it. Talk it over and apply before August 1st.

Want to be a Team Leader?

This Could Be You! Applications close August 1st, 2011

Those selected will start January 2012
