McCLELLAN, SABONIS DOMINATE IN WCC TOURNAMENT QUARTERS

Redshirt senior Eric McClellan followed up his fi rst game after being named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year with his best off ensive

game as a Zag. He poured in 26 points with 14 coming in the fi rst half, knocking down eight of 15 fi eld goals (3-for-5 3FG) and going

7-for-7 from the free throw line. That coupled with a huge performance from Domantas Sabonis led GU to the win. Sabonis had 17 in the

fi rst half on the way to 24 points on the night. He was 8-for-11 from the fi eld and had his fi rst-career game with multiple threes going

2-for-2. Sabonis was also 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

WCC RETURNERS

Last season, Kyle Wiltjer was dominant on his way to earning WCC Most Outstanding Player honors as he averaged 18.0 points and 9.0

rebounds on .595 shooting from the fi eld. He was 8-for-13 (.615) from behind the arc and averaged 2.0 assists per game. In the champi-

onship win over BYU, Wiltjer posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Also for the tournament Domantas Sabonis (7-for-12)

and Kyle Dranginis (7-for-11) were effi cient from the fi eld in combining to make 14 of 23 fi eld goals and 16 of 22 free throws.

WCC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

- Gonzaga is 46-15 all-time in the WCC Tournament with 14 titles and 21 fi nals appearances, including a fi nals appearance in each of the

last 18 seasons.

- Mark Few is 29-4 (.879) all-time in WCC Tournament with title-game appearances in all 16 previous seasons.

- Gonzaga carries an nine-game winning streak in the 2016 semifi nal game vs. BYU.

- Redshirt senior Kyle Dranginis is now 9-0 in the four WCC tournaments he’s played in.

McCLELLAN NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Redshirt senior guard Eric McClellan was chosen by the league coaches as the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, while Domantas Sabonis

and Kyle Wiltjer were named to the All-WCC First Team and Josh Perkins was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team. McClellan becomes

the sixth Zag to take home the DPOY honors and second in a row after Gary Bell won the award last season. In the regular season, he

notched 26 steals and chipped in with seven blocks from his guard position. He also added 9.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for GU.

SABONIS NAMED COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL AMERICAN

Sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis brought home one of the nation’s highest honors when he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-

American on Thursday, College Sports Information Directors of America offi cials announced. Sabonis, who carries a 3.46 grade-point aver-

age as a Sport Management major, was named to the Second Team and becomes the eighth Gonzaga men’s basketball player overall to

earn the award and 14th honoree overall. He’s just the third sophomore in program history to be recognized at the Academic All-America

level and one of just four sophomores nationwide this season that earned the distinction on the list comprised of three fi ve-player teams.

WILTJER, SABONIS MOVING UP RECORD BOOKS

In just two seasons, Kyle Wiltjer has put himself among the top Zags when it comes to scoring. His total of 638 points last season currently

ranks as the seventh-best single-season total in program history, but his current total of 637 points this season has a chance to surpass

it. His total of 1,275 points as a Zag also ranks 23rd all-time at GU. For Sabonis, his rebounding numbers have been the most impressive,

currently ranking as the sixth-best single-season total with 361 rebounds this season, just six boards out of the top fi ve. His career-total of

629 rebounds, is just 13 boards out of the top 10 all-time at GU.

IRONMAN: WILTJER MINUTES

Kyle Wiltjer has steadily grow his playing time, going from 11.6 to 23.8 minutes per game in his two seasons at Kentucky, and now he’s

taken on an even bigger role at Gonzaga. Last season, he averaged 27.6 minutes per game and was the team’s leading scorer, but coupled

with the injury to Przemek Karnowski, Wiltjer not only leads the team in scoring this season but also in minutes played at 33.4 per game.

PERKINS LEADING AT THE POINT

Redshirt freshman Josh Perkins has shown his growth over the last month. In the last 10 games, he’s had at least fi ve assists on seven

occasions, and has a 3.29 assist-to-turnover ratio. He’s had at least eight points in seven straight games, including a 21-point outburst

against Saint Mary’s at home. In 18 conference games, Perkins was the second in the league three-point shooting at .463 (25-for-54) and

was fi fth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.7.

MELSON FINDING HIS ROLE

Sophomore guard Silas Melson has been a force on both ends of the fl oor for Gonzaga, especially in the last 10 games, where’s he’s

knocked down 38-for-72 (.528) from the fl oor, 18-of-39 (.462) from behind the three-point line and 23-of-28 (.821) from the free throw

line. In his last three games, Melson scored career-high 18 points in a win over San Diego, 13 in a win at BYU and 15 in the WCC Quarterfi -

nals against Portland.

DEFENSE CARRYING THE LOAD

Since giving up 94 points in an overtime win at San Francisco-- the fi rst 90-plus-point opponent for Gonzaga since a 96-91 OT loss at USF

in 2011 -- GU opponents have averaged just 64.4 points per game over the last 16 games. That includes just two opponents reaching the

70 mark, while two other opponents were held to 48 (USF at home) and 52 (San Diego at home). Over the 16-game span, Gonzaga has

held opponents to just .398 percent shooting overall and just 27.0 percent from behind the arc.

WCC ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS, ONLY TEAM WITH THREE

Gonzaga was the only team in the league with three players named to the WCC All-Academic First Team announced by conference offi cials

on Friday. Kyle Wiltjer (3.76, MBA), Kyle Dranginis (3.88, Masters in Organizational Leadership) and Domantas Sabonis (3.46, Sport Man-

agement) each earned their fi rst league academic honor. It also marks the fi rst time GU has had three on the fi rst team in a season since

the 1999-00 squad had four with Mike Nilson, Ryan Floyd, Matt Santangelo and Jimmy Tricco earn the award.

BOUNCEBACKS

With the win at San Diego following the loss to Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga has followed each of its last 12 losses up with a victory, having not

lost back-to-back games since Feb. 20-22, 2014, at BYU and at USD. What’s even more impressive is in those 12 games following a loss,

GU’s margin of victory is +23.2 points, with only two of those 12 games being a single-digit scoring margin. Overall, the Zags have gone

75 games without having lost two straight, giving them the third-longest active streak in the nation behind Villanova’s 101 and Kansas’ 93.

FEW vs. WCC

- Few is 226-28 all-time against the WCC in the regular season, a winning percentage of .890.

- Few has led GU to four undefeated WCC campaigns (2004, ‘06, ‘09, ‘13) and four one-loss WCC seasons (2001, ‘02, ‘08, ‘15).

- Under Few, Gonzaga has not lost more than three WCC games in any year, and never fi nished lower than second in the regular season race.

- GU has won 19 WCC regular-season titles and the last four in a row after winning a league-record 11 straight from 2001-2011.

A ZAG GOES FOR 20 IN A HALF...FIVE TIMES

Senior Kyle Wiltjer has had four of the hottest streaks of his high-scoring career at Gonzaga against Santa Clara, LMU, Arizona and Wash-

ington State when scored 20-plus points in the fi rst half of all four games. Domantas Sabonis equaled the feat with a 20-point fi rst half

against Tennessee. He was 7-for-9 from the fi eld and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

WILTJER’S MASTERFUL HALF

Kyle Wiltjer had the biggest half of his career on Thursday against Santa Clara, scoring 23 points. He was nearly perfect, knocking down 8

of 10 fi eld goals, including 6-of-7 from behind the three point line. He made his only free throw of the half and grabbed four rebounds. It

marked the fourth time this year that he has posted at least 20 points in a half. Wiltjer ended the game with a season-high-tying 35 points,

marking his fi fth game with 30-plus on the year.

KARNOWSKI OUT FOR SEASON

Senior center Przemek Karnowski is out for the season following back surgery on Dec. 31. The 7-1 stalwart for Gonzaga had never missed a

game due to injury until a back injury kept him out of the Washington State game on Dec. 2. He missed eight games before having surgery.

1,000-POINT CLUB FOR KARNOWSKI

In Gonzaga’s win over UW to open the Battle 4 Atlantis, senior center Przemek Karnowski became the 39th player in program history to

top 1,000 points for his career. The big man also stands just 19 rebounds shy of becoming the 14th player with at least 600 rebounds. The

combination of 1,000 points and 600 rebounds is even more elite as only eight players in school history have accomplished that feat.

FOUR WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis have each been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week twice this season. Most recently,

Wiltjer earned the honor of Feb. 1. In a pair of wins over Santa Clara and San Francisco, he averaged 25.0 points and 5.0 rebounds to

go along with 10 three-pointers. On Thursday, he caught fi re from the behind the arc on the way to a season-high-tying 35 points that

included seven threes. He was 10-for-15 from the fi eld for the game and 7-for-10 from behind the arc. He was also 8-for-9 from the free

throw line to go along with fi ve rebounds, two assists and a block.

ZAGS TO TRAVEL FAR AND WIDE

In its fi rst month of the season, Gonzaga made the 5,900-mile (one way) trip to Okinawa, Japan, to take on Pitt at the Armed Forces Classic

on November 13. After returning home on Nov. 14, the Zags jumped back on the plane on Nov. 22 and traveled to Paradise Island, Baha-

mas, for the Battle for Atlantis. That trek amounted to nearly 2,700 miles one way. All-told, between the two roundtrips, the Zags traveled

more than 17,000 miles in the season’s fi rst three weeks. Now Gonzaga won’t leave the state of Washington until Dec. 31.

REGULAR SEASON OPENER CANCELED AT HALF

Gonzaga’s matchup with Pitt at the Armed Forces Classic ended abruptly at halftime when offi cials deemed the playing surface too slip-

pery to continue. In a hot and humid environment on the U.S. Marine Base Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan, the Camp Foster Fieldhouse

fi lled up with 3,000 troops and their families, but condensation on the fl oor made the conditions tough for both teams. Players slipped

often in the fi rst half, but Pitt held a 37-35 lead. Kyle Wiltjer had a game-high 15 points for the Zags, although the win-loss results and

stats will not count toward offi cial game and career records.

streak in the nation at the time and the second-best streak all-time in the NCAA Division I ranks behind UCLA’s 13 Pac-10 Conference titles from

1967-79.

Few has led Gonzaga to an Elite Eight appearance (2015) and fi ve Sweet 16 appearances (2000, ‘00, ‘06, ‘09, ‘15), coached 10 All-Americans, six

Academic All-Americans, 70 all-conference selections, 11 WCC Players of the Year, six league newcomers of the year and six league defenders

The Bulldogs made a 17th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, a streak that started when Few was an assistant coach in 1999 and

currently ranks the Zags tied for fourth among current active streaks behind Kansas, Duke and Michigan State. When Dan Monson departed for

the University of Minnesota following that Elite Eight season, Few was named head coach and has continued the streak the past 16 years.

In 2015, Gonzaga took full advantage of that 17th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, making a run to the Elite Eight, before falling to

eventual national champion Duke. The Zags won a school-record 35 games last season, including a record 22-game win streak, and WCC regular

season and tournament titles. Few was named WCC Coach of the Year in a sweep of league individual awards -- Kevin Pangos, Player of the Year;

Gary Bell Jr., Defender of the Year, Kyle Wiltjer Newcomer of the Year. In addition, Pangos and Wiltjer each earned multiple All-America honors,

including Third Team accolades from the Associated Press. Following the season, Few also threw out the fi rst pitch at a Seattle Mariners game

on June 6, and coached the USA Team that earned a bronze medal at the Pan-Am Games.

In 2013-14, Few’s Bulldogs again reigned supreme in the West Coast Conference, sweeping the WCC regular season and conference tournament

titles for the 11th time in his tenure. GU put together a record of 29-7, including a 15-3 league mark before falling to top-seeded Arizona in the

NCAA Tournament Round of 32.

Gonzaga fi nished the 2012-13 season 32-3, hitting the 30-win plateau for the fi rst time in school history, and marking the 11th time in Few’s

13 years as head coach the Bulldogs had single-digit losses. The Bulldogs fi nished the regular season ranked No. 1 and received a No. 1 seed in

the NCAA Tournament before falling in the Third Round.
